How To Use Groundcover Junipers - Erosion Control Planting On A Slope - In this video I go over how to plant and maintain groundcover Junipers on a bank or slope. Junipers do require some maintenance to keep them looking their best year around. I go over several different varieties of Junipers that can be used for this application.

Came to learn why my junipers are doing...will continue my search for a more comprehensive video. Good to know that there are different varieties of junipers though so thanks for that.

We had a large sloped area with junipers that we had taken out. It was way too difficult to maintain. Standing on a slope pulling weeds was a hazard and I feared stepping on snakes. The leaves would blow in there and it was a mess. Just not for me. Not that much of it. We now have two tiered retaining walls where I can plant and maintain more easily. Great info!

Thanks, Jim. Your friend's bank, especially the crape myrtles crowning the top, is stunning. While living in my last house in Florida, a previous owner had planted a bunch of juniper ground cover. It always scared the heck out of because i am afraid of snakes. I was backed up to a field and beside a swamp, so snakes were a legitimate, and unfortunate, reality. I would not use pine straw for that reason, too. Too much camoflage, plus my mother, while gathering pine straw in our woods to put on the azaleas, always seemed to increase the snake population. Hopefully, in hour area, that isnt too big of a worry.

Nepeta if full sun or creeping phlox if part shade. Much easier to maintain. Plant at top of slope and let them creep down over time.

Thank you for the detailed vid! We were looking into ground covers for our slope by the side of our house in the front yard. Thought of doing a retaining walls, but the guys quoted us $thousands. I think it’s a little ridiculous. We are gonna do some borders and plant some blue rug junipers (thanks to you we know what we want). One question: Do they multiply/jump? I don’t want them to invade my neighbor’s side? If so, would putting an plastic edging prevent it? Thanks. You earned a sub! 😊

I have a slope facing the street that is steep and difficult to mow. I have been thinking about juniper to cover this so this video is very helpful! Two questions, when is the best time to plant - spring ot fall? Also, how often does your neighbor have to trim them to keep that gorgeous smooth look? I'm guessing he uses a hedge trimmer? Sorry, that was three questions 😁 Thanks again for the video, it's so nice to have a garden channel from someone local to me, very helpful! 🍃💚🍃

thanks , what would be your recommendation for plants on a steep slope facing sun and wind at time, plants that could be annual ( four seasons ) resistant ,cover the ground, minimise the weeds issues, provide possibly flowers for the bees and insects for birds holdthe ground and low maintenance . I know it is much to ask ;)) Am looking at rosemary, thyme, lavender , possibly high decorative herbs ,... any recommendation? thanks a lot Francois

I'm in Southern California, zone 10b and have ~6 foot steep slope on my side yard, ~60 feet long, 10 feet wide from the yard fence to the sidewalk and is all dirt. Will Juniper do well in my zone? We get very little rain so I need something on the drought resistant side but not iceplant. We just killed all the ivy that was growing as it was taking over the wood fence and the neighbors didn't like it going into their yard. I really enjoy your video's and the easy how-to's!

Thanks for the comparison of other junipers. They could be nice in fairy garden or potted applications where the slow growth is not as much an issue. You've provided so much useful information for growing slope applications. I need something like this for my yard as my knees can no longer take the sideways slope while mowing. My entire yard is actually nothing but clover, plantain and dandelion weeds, so keeping the Juniper weed free will be a challenge until I can get rid of all the weeds that pretend to be a lawn ( frequent mowing is a must). So, Beside Pine ( or Hardwood) mulch, do you recommend using a pre-emergent around the Juniper transplants?

I'm wondering if the juniper on that slope is the blue chip juniper, not the blue rug. The blue rug is flatter, is not quite as thick, has longer branches like the one he is holding in the pot, and would require quite a bit more pruning to keep it off that lawn section.

Also I have a juniper that has grown 8ft tall. All the foliage below it has died. It separates me and a neighbors property (it's over 10ft on my property not touching theirs. But is there anything I can do to revitalize it? It seems like it starved itself of sunlight growing so thick. I figure I'll cut it down and plant some kind of arborvitae in its place.

Hi Jim. My family lives in Durham, NC and we have a slope in our backyard that was left natural. The slope is beginning to erode and we are looking for a landscaper to help us figure out how to control the erosion, and help us figure out what plants we can put in that area to help. Do you have any recommendations on landscapers that might be able to help with something like this in the triangle area? Thank you!

I have a steep hill- I'd love to plant this kind of juniper, but I would also like to add some interest of some shrubs, like nandinas or other bushes I don't have to worry about watering (relying on SC rainfall to do the work)- would it be possible to plant groups of bushes with this juniper surrounding the plants or is this juniper too aggressive for that?

Howdy Jim, I have 2-3 'problem' areas at my new-to-me house in DFW area of Texas. Wondering about the best ground cover juniper for a long strip (85' x 7') on the east side between sidewalk and fence (not the 'hellstrip' - I'm trying Liriope spicata there.) . It's a difficult to water area so, drought tolerance appreciated. Don't want too much height as sight-line for vehicles leaving drive is important. Soil is sandy and water does not 'pool' there. . J. procumbens, ? horizontalis, ? conferta ? other??? - and which var.; blue mound, wilton, blue rug - kinda wish I could find Bonin Isles....any advice welcome. I'm really leaning towards a J. conferta but....?

How do these do with blocking out thick weeds? I have a slope behind my house that goes into a pond and it's covered with thick weeds/brush (like 6 ft tall in some places). I'm looking to kill it all and replace it with a ground cover that would hopefully choke out anything that tries to grow.
