Glad and thankful both that you have provided this video for us. My home is in Indiana. Because of our inclement weather here, we experience quite a bit of shifting sloped areas. Lots of rain, lots of ice and snow is severely hard on some of our properties here. Im very impressed with this as an idea for a corner of my front lawn that slopes down to my driveway. The first issue is that my main natural gas line and water line both are buried underneath that areas dirt. Have to be very careful with even hand digging. So im thinking this is a great idea for my sloped corner

It looks good but each one of those is $85 plus tax (for the smaller ones). Looks like about 200 of them. So you're looking at $17,000 to buy it and even more to install. Wouldn't a retaining wall made out of stone rocks be cheaper?

Interesting that it works without being locked behind it. There's no deadman effect like when you build a retaining wall. I guess it's not holding the same force though. Probably works best in clay soil.

Dirt Lockers work with all types of soil including clay, rocky, or sandy. Metal rebar hooks anchor the Dirt Lockers down initially, creating a level surface for your plants to grow. It is the then roots that stabilize the hillside. Retaining walls can get weaker over time where as the Dirt Locker system gets stronger over time (more plants the better).

I purchased and used these and my slope. I will be removing them and building an actual retaining wall. I went above and beyond with the use of rebar stakes to ensure I wouldn’t have any issues. Unfortunately the dirt locker system did not hold up and the pieces have been breaking allowing the soil to shift. I would caution users who proceed with this option. Maybe my setup was incorrect. Maybe the sun took a toll on the plastic. Maybe the plastic is too thin and couldn’t hold the weight of the soil (even more so when wet).

This is true as retaining walls are only as strong as the first day they are installed, and unfortunately get weaker over time. The Dirt Lockers gets stronger over time because of the roots structure from the plantings. The good news, is that our system can work in conjunction with retaining walls as an option :)

Longer than a retaining wall, and in my city if you terrace you can just do it. If you do a retaining wall you need an engineer.

@@graphicallydeb9897 you only need a permit for retaining walls over 4 feet high in my city. As for how long it lasts, there is no way to say these will last longer than retaining walls, as they haven't been around long enough to prove durability. Guarantee stone will outlast these plastic things in hot prairie sun over decades of exposure. We have retaining walls that were built over 100 years ago with no repairs and Ive personally built terraced retaining walls with my dad that are 50 years old and still look like the day we built them. With a product like this there is NO way you can honestly say it will outlast a properly built retaining wall because the product hasnt been around nearly long enough to prove that. ALL you can honestly claim about a product this relatively young is that its easier to install. I always use things like TREX synthetic decking as an example. They came out 2 decades ago or so and had a 50 year guarantee. Well, lo and behold, the harsh midwest Kansas summer sun and winters caused that stuff to break down in 20 years or so and now they've amended their "guarantees".

@@dirtlocker This is not a wholly honest or informative answer. Something that does not biodegrade says absolutely NOTHING of it's age/degradation due to heat/cold/UV/elements over time. It only speaks to whether bacteria/bugs/etc will degrade it. ALL products like this, INCLUDING HDPE are absolutely vulnerable to temperature cycle and UV degradation over time. Now, you can say you guys have built some UV *resistance* into it, but that in no way means it will last FOREVER, "technically" or otherwise, as no one has been able to build HDPE or other plastic that is absolutely invulnerable to elemental degradation. Surely you aren't claiming you guys have invented the worlds first material like this??? I always use things like TREX synthetic decking as an example. Retaining walls if not engineered and installed correctly is an expensive problem to happen. I have a bunch of them on my property and thankfully have had no problems in more than 20 years. With that said, this solution looks a lot less expensive in the short and long term.

can you use this around existing shrubs . I have a steeper slope than the one in your video with creeping junipers spaced around 5 feet that we planted a few years ago and mulch that is hard to keep in place . Looks like it may be a solution . Just dont want to ripp out shrubs

Hi Mark! Like Story, I have also watched all your videos. My husband and I were just talking yesterday about installing the Dirt Locker on our property here in Oregon. We have a hillside that is similar in size however it curves in the opposite direction. Have you ever installed in that shape?

Hello Stephen, the main video on website shows the hillside after 2 seasons using the product. The objective is that over time hillside grows in and the DirtLockers become less noticeable while still doing their job of holding water and soil for the plants they support. Like rebar is to concrete, support without being seen.

So you put up 80 dirt lockers. How many “J” hooks did you have to use?

When making separate rows, you will need 1 J hook per Dirt Locker plus 1 one the end. A row of 10 is 11 J hooks. Separate rows are needed for curved slopes or extra steep, between 36-45 degrees. 45 is the max!

How is CMU a retaining wall? Those don't really look like blocks I'd use for a structural retaining wall.... :( This dirt locker looks interesting, but ... I just don't think it's long-term without regular and complete maintenance. Course, neither are timber retaining walls.

The Dirt Lockers actually work great in conjunction with retaining walls, but even though it looks aesthetically beautiful, the main difference is that a retaining wall will only ever be its strongest upon install. Where as the Dirt Locker system gets stronger from install as the plants grow within the nurturing aid of the system. Not to mention, the cost difference and DIY ability!

Can these be placed on top of landscape fabric or tarp? I'm planning to start a peony garden on a very large hill/slope area that is full of weeds and crabgrass it this durable and holds up well?

The best scenario would be to use biodegradable weed block that way when the plants grow in, they will grow into the slope. The.n use mulch on the DirtLocker terraced cells.

CAN DIRT LOCKER® CAUSE NANOPLASTICS? + With Dirt Locker®, you don't have to worry about nano plastics or micronanoplastics. Nanoplastics form from moving plastic, like plastic bags or plastic packaging, whereas the Dirt Locker® is installed into the ground and do not move. Even if someone felt compelled to sand down the Dirt Locker®, they are non toxic. HDPE is actually approved for food processing so the cutting board you use to chop veggies, or a chef uses to prepare your a meal at your favorite restaurant is probably prepared on a cutting board with HDPE plastic. So there are a few pros when using 100% recycled HDPE plastic - it's non toxic, does not break down over time, doesn't loose it's strength during the recycling process, and the Dirt Lockers themselves can be can be recycled.
