Medications like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are getting a lot of attention. What are they? How can they help people with type 1 and type 2? Should you think about taking one? After all, the weight loss component alone sounds amazing.
This week, Stacey talks with Dr. Steve Edelman, who lives with type 1 and heads up Take Control of Your Diabetes - TCOYD - a not-for-profit organization with the goal of teaching and motivating patients in diabetes self-care. We go through the science behind these medications, who might think about taking them, and whether they live up to the hype.
This podcast is not intended as medical advice. If you have those kinds of questions, please contact your health care provider.

I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 25 years and Ozempic has changed my life. I haven’t noticed a huge difference in my insulin sensitivity, but I’ve been able to lose weight for the first time in my life. For the first time ever I feel normal and don’t feel controlled by my hunger. When you’re Diabetic, being overweight carries an additional stigma and I feel empowered by this medication to be able to take control of my health and one day be freed from this stigma.

I started out with Ozempic. It was working fine. As soon as Mounjaro was available I started it my weight was 334 and now 252. Almost 25 percent. I'm now still loosing. 95 percent in range using my now Dexcom G7. I also take Jardiance and Metformin. Only side effects are looser stools and a numbing of my taste buds. Wonder drugs and monitors.

As you probably know, I’ve been type one for 45 years. I was very overweight was due to steroid shots in my spine. My mother was very overweight though and eventually killed her. I would’ve love to know in about this two years ago. Immediately she passed 11 months ago Heart failure through obesity. She was 145 kg at the end. When her body couldn’t handle it she jumped up to 165 kg. I have lost 25 kg since she died. Amazing what Greeff does to you?

Hmm, semaglutide, not semiglutide. I think "sema" refers to the 7 day cycle. Good discussion. I agree about Type 1. I've heard from at least one Type 1 person that the drug works for them. Probably this is due to the gastric slowdown since their bodies cannot produce insulin.

I have a co-worker who is borderline type 2. Her doctor put her on Ozempic. She has lost weight but only because she is horrible sick all the time. She is nauseous all the time and vomits every time she eats. You aren’t hungry because your sick. I recently watched a medical hearing on Ozempic. The doctor testifying said the way it works is that it makes you sick for life and that makes you lose weight. I think you are being untruthful in your description of how they work.
