ALL ABOUT PHARAOH HOUNDS: EGYPT'S ANCIENT DOG BREED 

I once adopted a puppy who was left out to die, no ngo took him in as he had Parvo. It took him a month to get back to health, I alway thought he might be a dobermann. But he grew up to look very unique after a lot of research, I found out he's a Pharaoh Hound. I just found my "bestest" friend, son and one of the rarest dog breeds in a dustbin a year back today :)....

The bit about the rabbits and the ferrets is not just a rumour, it's actually true. The "Pharaoh Hound" is the Kelb tal-Fennek ("rabbit dog") from the Mediterranean archipelago of Malta. So while in the same general area as Egypt, and while similar breeds can be found in the region, it's considered to be Maltese, and not Egyptian. They're not that common here in Malta, where I've been living for the past 20 years. You'd mostly find them on farms, because people either like small dogs, or huskies (in a country between the 34th and 35th parallel, but hey). They need space, and Malta is an very densely populated country. Having said that, I've seen three of them in the back of a pick-up truck - pick-up trucks being driven almost exclusively by farmers. They're very elegant and beautiful dogs, and reputedly the fastest dog on rough terrain.

Thank you so much for making this series with professionals. I volunteer at a shelter and people getting a dog, completely misinformed on the breed traits, and just for the look of the dog, is a big issue that ends up with the dogs getting the short end of it. This is good information to put out so that people adopt dogs more suitable to their lifestyles, which in turn will keep dogs from being drop off at the shelter because the people can't handle them. Looking forward to seeing more dogumentaries on other breeds.

This video has saved my life. My husband and I recently adopted two young pups, one of them we had no idea what type of dog it was. Turns out, it perfectly fits the pharaoh hound!! Exactly the same traits, look, and behavior. And yes, the super size perky ears!! I feel so relieved because these dogs are challenging. Our others dogs are naturally off-leash, but we noticed immediately the prey drive of this dog. It’s very unsafe to have them off lease (my pooch took my on an accidental run just today!) Learning about the breed answers so many questions that I had.
