Bug isn't a technical term when referring to anything creepy-crawly, that is just American slang. Bug is a technical term when referring to a group of insects known as the true bugs, which includes stink bugs, and i think leaf/tree hoppers as well.

Btw, I can't get over how beautifully red Jessi's hair is. I love natural red hair. At least I'm pretty sure it's natural. It looks natural and she has the skin of a redhead too. (Also, I know I'm getting creepy but I love her eyes too. I love the distinctive shape. And I'm going to stop being creepy now, I promise.)

This reminds me of a part of a childrens' show called "Myror i brallan" in Sweden. (translates to "Ants in my pants") They had a thing called "Gissa bajset" ("Guess the poop"), where they showed some poop, three animals and a gave the kids a few clues. Then you were supose to guess to whom the poop belonged. I loved that show!

Yay Red Footed Tortoise! I own one myself named Tortellini. These guys are absolutely adorable, especially when they eat. Picture one gleefully mauling a flower in their characteristic slow motion :D And I have to agree with Jessi, as someone working in the animal care industry, poop inevitably crops up in the conversation during dinner. Never fails lol. Love the new location.

Guys, great video. I learned several things today. For example i had never noticed that in English you have two words to differentiate "turtles and tortoise", in spanish we only have one "tortuga" and to differentiate we add "de mar" (sea).

Judging from the samples currently decorating my windows, I'd say gull poop goes from green over purple to brownish black in the same defecation. Seabird poop is known for its very high contents of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium and therefore used as manure (called "guano"). The white part more or less serves the same function as pee, but without the bird losing as much water as a mammal would, allowing for less water in the body and therefore lower body weight.
@Yoelmh

Uric acid production by birds and repltiles is actually less efficient in terms of energy, but it conserves water (we have to void a lot of dilute urine due to urea toxicity, they void very little water). This is one of the reasons they (esp reptiles) can go a long time without water, whereas we can barely go a few hours without being uncomfortable.

I love the fact that humans are fascinated with other species whereas all other wild animals are generally only concerned with "is it a danger, can I have sex with it, or can I eat it." Our levels of curiosity is what makes us human.

2 questions I would have asked: What's the difference between a tortes and a turtle, and do they have nerves in their top shells (and if not, can they feel through them)?
@connordaniel134
@connordaniel134 10 лет назад
tortoises tend to live on land and live longer lives while turtles primarily live in the water and live shorter lives.
@LaviniaDeMortalium
@LaviniaDeMortalium 9 лет назад
They 'do' have nerves. She's done a video on that over on her channel. She also advises you don't paint them, as that will cause the animal to suffocate.

Very good! The strict distinction between turtle (as in water-dwelling) and tortoise (land-dwelling) appears to be rather unique to the English language. Most other languages have just one word and add some specifier (land, water, sea, etc.) if the need arises. And as you pointed out, even though English has this terminology, it's not as clear cut as some people think. Tortoises actually are turtles!

While 'Bug' is a technical term formally used to identify an animal order, it is not used has Hank just said it was used, as that is a common usage but still incorrect. My dad works with insects and he had me learn this from a young age as because it also deals with basic logic, "All bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs". Bugs are part of an order of insect called Hemiptera and sometimes more specifically the sub-order Heteroptera, which includes bedbugs, assassin bugs and pond skaters

birds do produce uric acid and not urea because otherwise they would need much more water to fully get rid of the excess ammonia (would be a huge stress to fly with more weight)

Colloquially, both biologists and laypeople use the word "turtle" to mean all chelonians. In general, the reptiles referred to as turtles live in or near the water and have adapted to swim by holding their breath underwater. The reptiles referred to as tortoises typically live primarily in arid regions and are built for storing their own water supply and walking on sandy ground.

Eeeeeeep, I love tortoises! And turtles. (Actually they're both just called "kilpikonna" (literally "shield toad") in Finnish so I always mix them up too, Hank. (Okay, you can say "vesikilpikonna" and "maakilpikonna", "vesi" meaning water and "maa" meaning land.)) Anyway I love them! I'd love to have one but I don't really trust myself to take care of animals... I wanted one as a kid but mum wouldn't allow it; she hates all reptiles for some reason.
