All About the Calcium Score | Heart Scan

Here we talk about a commonly performed test to assess future cardiovascular risk called a CT Calcium Scan. This provides a validated 'score' that reflects the amount of calcium that is detected within the wall of the heart arteries. Calcium is a mineral that is stored in our bones and teeth. Over time, this can also form within fatty plaque deposits in the walls of the arteries of the heart.
The calcium score, among all the other cardiovascular risk factors, can help provide greater insights into long term treatment strategies to help reduce risk. Here Professor Barlis discusses what the test is, how it is performed and what information it may provide when looking at heart health.

Zero here. 59 yrs old male. Took my CAC test on 8-4-22. Workout 5 days a week . All weight training for about 28 yrs. Surprised with results since I have high triglycerides 200 to 400. A1c 5.5. Fasting glucose average 94. Took a Fasting insulin test 7.1. BP average 110/65. Take bunch of supplements that runs about 150 dollars a month. Also test my blood at least every 6 months. Even after all this I dont take my health for granted. God is good. Watch your health because most doctors won't. And look into functional doctors. They think out of the box.

Three years ago, at age 72, I scored a whopping 1600 plus on the calcium test!!...I figured I would be dead within a year...Currently, I am being evaluated for a TAVR procedure, as well as undergoing Ablation for AFIB. Obviously, my situation is bad, but the calcium score does not mean one is going to drop dead at any minute...in fact, it seems to be the least of my problems!

Thank you for the informative video I got a alcium score of 3 on a cardiac CTA angiogram when I was getting a full workup for chest pain but I also have EOE and that is also a common. I've had them on and off for years and just wanted to follow-up to be sure. The hospital told me to start a daily Statin low-dose and the daily aspirin low dose. I followed up with a cardiologist and they suggested the daily Statin but not the aspirin. This was when I was 43 so it's been a year and was so worried about taking a daily medication for the rest of my life so I never started. But of course I want to keep myself safe and mitigate any risk so I can be here for my wife and young daughter. The idea of having any type of cardiac issue of course freaks you out. I was going to follow up with the cardiologists now that it's been a year and I'm sure we'll still have to take it but I certainly will if that's the case. I don't have any other risk factors and of course I'm watching my diet and trying to exercise more. I do have sinus tachycardia or sinus rhythm with occasional SRVs or something. And my EKG always say normal variant I believe or something like that. Anyway, appreciate the video.

I’m 18 and my dad’s 62. He did some smoking back in the day but quit way before I was born. He is overweight and (used to) drink milk with every meal and loves eating meat and fried food. He got his CAC score back a few days ago and it was 2301. Everywhere on the internet, there is no graph that even accounts for a score that high. He doesn’t show any signs of pain in his chest, but I can’t stop worrying about him. Apparently his risk of heart attack is extremely high. My mom says we should be happy we caught it before it does damage with physical symptoms, but I can’t wrap my head around that number. 2301. I’m really scared for him.

He shouldn’t be eating fried foods unless they’re fried in the bacon fat, olive oil, butter, or coconut oil. Vegetable seed oils, like Crisco and flour will get you before you know it. Get him on low carb and ask him to check out some of the keto doctors like Dr. Ken Berry and Eric berg on RU-vid. I promise you it can turned his life around.. these doctors knew years ago what the medical profession is just now realizing and is having a hard time admitting to. Doesn’t coincide with their statins and other pill pushing. My husband and son would still be alive today, Had they not been under the care of such respected physicians. Even the diabetes association resisted this and it is mentioned on some thing like page 283 of their program. However, the head of the organization is on keto ha ha. At least have him check into it.

I have swallow syncope and a 4 week halter monitor showed 1st and 2nd degree type 1 AV block with bradycardia to 25 BPM. My cardiologist suspects the heart block could be from calcium deposits as a result of my bicuspid aortic valve interfering with electrical conduction of the heart pacing. Will this imaging and Ca score test confirm this possibility?

I’m 66 and just had a cac test that showed the LAD artery is at 350. The cardiologist was very concerned initially and did a stress test that showed some irregularities in the heart beat. Arrhythmia etc. then he did a cardiolite stress test showed the blockage but the flow was not bad enough to do a heart catheterization or stent or bypass. I still feel like I have a time bomb in my heart that would be fatal if the calcium deposits tear or loosen and cause a total obstruction. This is called the widow maker heart attack. Any opinions on what I should ask next.

It's not the calcium deposits that you need to worry about if they're not causing you any problems. It's the soft plaque that breaks off that causes heart attacks and strokes. I'm 71 years old, and I have a 1749 CAC score. I've had a CT heart scan done, and it came back normal. I also had a stress test, and it also came back normal. I now watch what I eat. Absolutely no processed foods, sugar, and lower carbohydrates in my diet. Start reading ingredients on products you buy seed oils and dairy products are terrible for us. I replace butter with extra virgin olive oil on and in everything. Added note: My nephrologist said I should not start keto, it's because I only have one kidney.

It costs around $100.00. Just ask your doctor to order it, like any other test. It takes no longer than any other xray, though it's a CAT scan. The radiation dose is very low, no more than a woman's mammogram and most women at a certain age-gets one of those every year! I got a CAC done yesterday because of family history. It's was 0. I am 63.

Dr you say the scan reports calcium deposit around the heart then how much calcium is deposited inside the arteries
@HeartMatters
@HeartMatters Год назад
Thank you. The scan looks at the calcium build up in the wall of the arteries, not sensitive enough to detect whether there is build up inside the artery. A CT coronary angiogram is often used to look for this which involves injection of dye during the CT scan. We are planning a video on CT coronary angiograms shortly.

Always best to assess your individual risk with your local MD. We have many patients who seek advice and always useful to assess them in the context of their risk factors and the likelihood of developing cardiovascular events. Beyond the 40's and 50's there may be a role for Calcium scores but again, this should be individualised.

Thank you for commenting, always worth getting any ongoing symptoms evaluated. A CT calcium score is not an appropriate test when assessing symptoms that may be present, it is purely a test that would be considered when someone does not have any symptoms.
