All Because of The Ice and how the plans of a profit hungry Great Lakes freighter manager went wrong

In the days long before Coast Guard ice breakers opened the Great Lakes shipping lanes in the spring some profit hungry vessel managers tried to get a jump on everyone else and all because of the ice, they lost in a big way. This story is inspired by an amazing photo of a Wolvin Class canaller that I found in the Library of Congress. Gazing at it I wondered when was it taken? And so I began to research it.
FYI- if you tune out early on this one, you'll miss the up-close study of the little canaller, plus you won't get to meet her cook.
Of course, like always, that initial research led to two videos and me going down rabbit holes until I uncovered the one of the worst spring ice-jams in Great Lakes history- and that little canaller was right in the middle of it. Along the way I also came across the name of the boat's captain and we see him close-up near the end of the video. I also found the story of Mr. William Mills who owned no less than 3 shipping companies and who gambled on sending two of his big lakeboats out way too early in the season. Instead of cold cash, he got a lesson in freshwater ice.

All of these videos are really fascinating. I am very intrigued by the Lakeboats of the Great Lakes. I think that the History and the Design of the Lake Freighters are really fantastic. The image at 6:43 just emphasizes the Coolness of the Lakeboats. As I don't live in the Great Lakes Region (I am actually from one of the Pacific Coast States), I have never personally seen the Lake Freighters in person, but All I have to say is I just find them very interesting and cool. Anyways, Great Video, and nice history.

Really enjoyed your video. As a youngster I spent a few months in 1973 working on the PM Laker “Harry Colby” built in 1927 and still coal fired at that time. Things changed slowly on the lakes and there were still turn of the century built ships working into the 70’s.

What a wonderful story, told by a superb researcher and narrator! I particularly liked the close up of the vessel with half of her complement of Crew visible. My favorite Crewman is also the Cook, peering out from the hull doorway at the ice which had held and tormented them for so long. This channel is an absolute joy, subscribed.

Once again you had me spell-bound. Amazing photo details coupled with your deep research. Now I need to go back and find the other video you mentioned describing this type of vessel.

Love your videos, I have come to the conclusion that I would not want to be a crewman on a RR ferry. They seem to have been a dangerous ride.

Love your videos wes and maybe in November you should do a series on the Issac m Scott and Charles s price plus the argus and hydrus since they were sister ships that incredible went down in the 1913 storm in Lake Huron and I am the 200th like seems like sister ships have issues on the lakes

Quite interesting. If the crew had any romance in them, they were thinking about how beautiful the ice is from that vantage point. If not, they were thinking, "The boss can make any decision he wants, as long as I'm not bound to pay for it." Waiting in the ice at the beginning of the season is the same as any day, being paid all the way.
