This is perhaps the most addictive of the Stones’ Open G songs. Once I learned it from your lesson I cannot stop playing it and cannot keep still as my feet are tapping furiously whilst playing . Thanks Jim in Scotland 🏴
I guarantee it? I'm gettin ready to pick up this Washburn? I can not wait! It's hard to come up with anything new in G. That was genius. One hell of a teacher we got too.
Been playing guitar off and on for over 35 years and I am only just discovering open-G tuning today. Boy do I feel like a schmuck. It's so much fun to play and so easy - can't believe I never knew about it.
yeah well dont' feel bad I got a guitar at 14 and mom got me some country lessons in first position from an old lady who had a music store but it was 20 years before I got to bar chords up the neck. I could never figure out what they were doing up the neck. just feeling sorry for myself. never had a teacher or was close to any band players. To this day I still try to figure out what was wrong with me. but now I can play most any lead solo and the rest but have never played in a real band.
Excellent James, just excellent. Pay no attention to the loser hater/critics. The vast majority of them couldn't get laid in a women's prison with a stack of pardons. Tell them to get a life. Thanks again.
Great job with this James! There are so many elements to this tune that make it one of the all time greats but that intro from the Exile version is a huge part of it! Much appreciated!
One of my favorites too. I spent a few years playing (almost) exclusively in open G . I got it from a Delta Blues CD. Then I realized it was "Keiths" key. Then I stumbled on all your PVT stones lessons in G. I was lucky then and lucky once more. I'll work on both intros thanks.
I got into Open G out of necessity, and Status Quo (Francis Rossi used it a lot during their mid-period stuff). Then played along with the tracks on Exile On Main St., and realised it was also in Open G. Then I read about Keith using it. Weird how that went.
I know you hear this all the time, but sometimes - when I see a lesson like this - I just have to remind you: You were put on the earth to do this. You are so terrific at it, and you love doing it. Quite frankly, I am jealous. Thanks.
What I find so great about this song, is that Keith's part follows the original acoustic version in Open G, and all the pretty notes. But Taylor's slide, and the horns bring in the pentatonic on top. What a cooker.
I read an interview with Keith a long time ago and it seems like I remember him saying that something on the guitar used on the intro was out of tune, but it just sounded right, so he left it on. Seems like he said something about if you play the album on a faster speed on your turntable, it is really obvious. I tried it out, and played it on 45 rpms instead of 33, and it is really noticeable. But, for some reason, at regular speed, you don't notice it. Pure magic.
Love the T shirt. Yes; the Glimmer Twins sold their souls back in the early days. That's why our 80 year old lads are still peckering around....till the devil calls....on down the line.
Always #1 in guitar lessons James! I hope all is well with you and yourfamily! I wish you and RU-vid was around in the early 60s after I saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show when I got my first guitar. Maybe I would have been on the Ed Sullivan show...Lol! Kidding! I learned SO much from you! Thanks James!👍🏻 ❤🙏
Dude you rule, thanks for the awesome tutorial! Love the pacing, the singing for context and the detailed explanation. At first I skipped to you playing Dancing Days and I really puzzled.
James you Blue Devil you. A rockin sound. Some nice double stops ala Keith. Rockin tune this is. The Blue Devil club featuring Deacon Blue,, let’s hear it for ‘Dee kin’ Blue ha hey…welcome to Schlagers…
What luck. Just by chance while re-watching one of your Stones tutorials I read a comment concerning your final video. Because of you, I bought a Pink Paisley Tele just to get my feet wet in the electric guitar ownership club and all I wanna know is Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods riffs. I thought there was something familiar about your style in your former nom 'd guerre.I listened with great interest to your final posting and I can't thank you enough for your efforts. I'm like you, I can barely read tabs, but I know an Em from a A, and your open G teachings have helped me immensely. I liked that pink MIJ Tele so much that I bought a real, honest to gosh, Fender Limited Edition Pro Tele with the Lollar neck pickup and the rreclaimed pine body with all the knots and nail holes and that gorgeous figured maple neck. They sure look good hanging together on the wall of my little man cave.I really hope you get this note because you've done a lot more good than you realize, and I understand every word of what you meant in that sign-off. Best of luck to you James James. I'll keep on watching.
well done, JJ!! this is one of my favorite intros of all time. the sheer beauty of it's simplicity ,w/ Charlie and Keith combining to give us simple, but legendary R&R music .BTW, you really kick up a fuss w/ that Tele. and isn't that what Rock's supposed to do? EXILE on Main St, was their last great record. rest easy, CHARLIE WATTS.
Did you read the Rolling Stone magazine article on Keith from Nov '15 ? He's got arthritis bad....Cross eyed heart is a great album...love it. Open G is used by Keith now to transpose older standard tuned songs to open g like "lets spend the night together"... (this according to the mag article)
Great job on a great song. I've been sliding into the intro but I think the hammer on that you do makes more sense. Also, in the verse when he goes from 5th to 7th fret (just before "All Down the Line"), instead of sliding, I do an upstroke on the 5th fret, a quick down stoke on the 6th and an up stroke again on the 7th. Not sure I really matters as it's pretty quick.
I’d say about half is good (Sweet Black Angel, Sweet Virginia, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Rip This Joint, Rocks Off, All Down The Line), but the rest is filler in my opinion
Following you for at least six years. Thanks for all the great work. Ever search for "Privetricker face"? There's a playlist. Sort of a You Tube paparazzi thing. Weird. Keep rockin from a fellow Crohnie in Cincinnati. Delete if you wish. I get it.
I see you don’t remove the e string like Keith does. Is that so you can tune that guitar back to standard tuning later? I just leave a couple different guitars in different tuning for stuff like this. Your videos are great thanks for posting this and other songs as well
Let me know when you nail that Mick Taylor slide solo! His damping is unreal and the execution is spot on. I've been trying for years and can only come close. That whole album is a master lesson in guitar playing.
+Jazzbox Recordings I'll never nail it. But I posted my own demo of a live version a few months ago. I'm not really a fan of doing slide work in standard tuning.
+James James That's the kicker, he's in standard tuning. That's how I learned too many years ago. The day I discovered alternate tunings was a miracle. Keep up the great work.
+Jazzbox Recordings Yeah it's a weird one. I can't get the slide part right for Midnight Rambler to save myself. The rhythm part. Every reference I could find says that it's standard tuning but I can never make it sound the same.
I just dropped my phone on my face and bumped the dislike button. Let this accident not reflect my true feelings. But rather be a reminder to all that you may, in fact, drop your phone on your face and be the asshole who hit the dislike button. Much love James
