How To Play "All Down the Line" by The Rolling Stones

Sorry I cut off the end of the neck in the video. There is nothing going on down there except the open G chord. Lesson starts around 4:00 if you want to skip the signatures on my Tele. I searched on RU-vid and didn't really find the best way to play this song so I thought I would throw in my version. It is pretty simple to play. Now, if I could only get Keith to sign my Telecaster.
After ten years of doing this and making basically nothing for my effort, I thought I would make a PayPal.Me link just in case anyone would like to contribute to the cause. I think my wife would be impressed if I showed her I could actually make a little money doing this. Any amount would be appreciated and you know I always try to answer all of your comments and take all of your requests. I don't know of a lot of RU-vid channels that do that. Thank you in advance for your kind gift. Just PayPal me at paypal.me/Millstap.

I have liked this song since I first heard it when I was about 15, I am 58 now and still love it, going to have to get another telly the one I have is staying in open G, great tone by the way and thanks for the vid I am going to have some fun with this one.

+alan leach You're welcome. This is a classic. I wanted to do it in my old band and they wanted to know why. That is why I am not with them anymore. It is pretty cool how Keith took that tuning and changed the sound of Rock n' Roll.

+alan leach Good deal. It is pretty easy and sounds great once you tune your guitar to the same G tuning. Be sure you use a sweetened tuning which flattens the 3rd a hair to make the notes blend together better.

Funny you mentioned "Life" there at the end. I was never a Stones guy but I listen to a lot of audiobooks & a few chapters into "Life" I decided to try a Stones tune....now I'm hooked.

I coincidentally talked about that booked today about Keith's love of heroin and how I am surprised he lived through it.
@lothar34

millstap He made a good point about attributing his survival to the purity he was able to get back then. Impurities and unknown ingredients are killers. I haven't finished the book yet, but I have learned Sugar, Down the Line, Knockin, and Rocks Off. I can't explain why playing 3 chords in standard bores me to death, but I can't get enough of basically doing the same thing in Open G

Great playing and lesson. You just had to set back about six inches so we could see what you were doing by the first fret, but I assume you are just doing open G and adding a fifth. You sound great and explain it so clearly. I have tuned one of my guitars to open G and will journey into that new world. Thank you for taking the time, it is appreciated.
@millstap

Sorry about that. There isn't much going on up there except the open strings and the chord Keith uses on the barred positions.

+millstap , I subscribed to your channel. What band are you in, if I can ask?
@millstap
@millstap 8 лет назад
+Chuck Jenkins I'm in no band right now. I live in a fairly small town outside of New Orleans and there is not much demand and I don't like to drive to New Orleans. I have friends that play almost every night down on Frenchmen Street near the French Quarter. I find I don't have the time to do that anymore with my travels and everything going on.
@JenkinsBoatWorks
@JenkinsBoatWorks 8 лет назад
ah, I understand. With all your signatures on your tele, I just wondered. I love in Shine A Light when Jagger, I think, refers to Buddy as Buddy M.F, Guy! Ha. Cheers
@millstap
@millstap 8 лет назад
+Chuck Jenkins Back in 2009, Johnny Winter was the first to sign the Tele when we played with him in Beaumont, Texas. Mike Zito was there too. That was the beginning of the signatures. I was playing with a New Orleans blues band called Blues4sale. Ed Wills is the lead of that band and he still plays in the French Quarter 3-4 nights a week. Some of my very first videos are of that night with Johnny. You can check them out. Here is one of them ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ghf_Re80hr4.html. There is some good back stage footage of Johnny in some of them.

Hey super great video! Sounds just like the record! You nailed it my brother! You have most of my heroes' autographs. I have question what model Telecaster is An American? I think you mentioned during the video is it a 1964 tele?
@millstap
@millstap 6 лет назад
Yes, it is a 1964 Tele that has been refinished. I bought it from a friend in Lafayette, LA. way back in 1978.

Great job. You really nailed the strumming pattern, better than most other lessons of this song. I tried copying your technique, but I just can't do it as good. I understand the chord shape, which is quite easy, but getting the chunky rhythm pattern takes some practice. Well done!

i love keith's guitar tone. he's been a huge inspiration to me. my personal favorite rolling stones video is the live version of love in vain. i love robert johnson's original too, keith's tone and mick taylor's playing just blows my mind. i love everything from the exile on main street album, you did a great job explaining this.
@PieIX
@PieIX 9 лет назад
Great stuff. Great tone. How'd you come about to using a thumb pick ?
@millstap
@millstap 9 лет назад
I got the idea from Johnny Winter when he said he held it like a regular pick. Once I started holding it that way, it was great. The only problem was it really wore down the nail on the index finger of my right hand so I have since stopped using it. It was a pain trying to patch up my nail all of the time with fake nails.

You're getting a great crisp sound out of your A string. What gauges are you using there.?
@millstap

I think here I was just using a standard 10-52 set which would make the A string a 42.

They are the original 1964 pickups but the bridge has been rewound and the neck repotted.

@@TheOriginalHoser I've still got the Tele setup ala Richards style to 5 strings and open G. I may do it someday but I know it won't be close. I don't think I have seen one photo of Jimi playing a Tele which is interesting.
