Extremely well thought out especially at a young age and he is absolutely right about the instant gratification factor in people - People should know that a new languge is not going to happen over night. It's immersion and repetition (for me at least) that make things start to stick in your memory. I can say at least a dozen small phases just from watching Hong Kong Film and Japanese film etc. It's so much easier learning that way&if u have native speakers as friends u remember what they say.

Good stuff Sam, nice to finally see this guy you were talking about. I surrounded myself with Japanese music and TV before coming to Japan and it helped me a lot with listening and speaking. But studying the old fashioned way still has its place, especially for reading and writing. There's no getting around that. 6:40 bro just said he studied grammar (it didn't work) ... they all say it doesnt work. I've yet to see a single successful AJATTER that hasnt "failed" with formal study yet. It's like they totally dismiss all those little seeds that were planted in their brain. I don't study grammar at all, but I sure as hell did look up a little bit of it in the beginning, and those little bits on info were fucking crucial in me figuring it out much later on. I never forgot that と is the "quotation" particle. at the time i was like WTF and moved on. But now yes, fuck yes, its the quotation particle. There's tons of little things like this I quickly scanned and moved on before totally dismissing formal study, but I'm not going to act like it was all useless....

The problem with subtitles is you are tempted to look at the subs and remember that rather than the Japanese Japanese follows a different sentence structure so the subs don't follow the same order as the audio. you may pick up 1 or 2 words but you'll be picking up English mostly.

its because, what do you use kana for anyway when in the beginning you dont know anything.. you dont know any japanese yet. i think khatz means by the time you know kanji, you'll be decent enough at japanese to know a few words you can read in hiragana. there is no need to use kana yet, better get kanji out of the way while doing your listening

Phantom Madman this is interesting because I wrote my comment 3 years ago ( apparently :/ ). I am now fluent in Japanese and can read hiragana and kanji. I can only speak for my own experience, but for me, which one you start first is almost an irrelevant point if you are truly in for the long haul. Although I still think that as hiragana makes up half of what you read and it is so quick to learn ( relatively ) that it makes no sense to wait. Get that out the way first, then use that understanding to learn more.

Gary Hewson thats awesome dude, yeah i just think this is what was going throught khatz mind. personally i did it the other way around too, and now i know about 500 kanji. i'd say it doesnt matter either but i knew people who started way too late on kanji after getting kana down. anyway im nowhere near fluent yet, i can hold a conversation with alot of grammar mistakes. planning on going hardcore this summer

@Andy_0L
@Andy_0L 5 месяцев назад
I don't think he's disregarding hiragana and katakana, I think he's saying Kanji as in "learn Japanese writing first" in general, because many people rely only on romaji. It wouldn't make sense to learn Kanji without hiragana/katakana, especially considering that in his old website he recommended to use the book "Remembering the Kana" to learn both.

...have you checked out the ds japanese coach game?? im immersing myself in japanese all day while (when i can) learning kanji through that game. i picked up katakana and hirigana straight away ( didnt realise that was the wrong way to go about it then ) . but i think the game is a really good supplement for this method of learning! especially for remembering kanji and even stroke order and stuff! peace

@goldenisaiah4347 I actually am, yes lol. Im about 17 or 18 years in now. I still start every day with Anki flashcards and I have an insanely long unbroken streak of that. The secret has been to be really disciplined in how I do it as the very frist thing I do when I open my eyes in the morning! I mean I dont check emails, twitter, IG, nothing... I dont even get a sip of water! Just open the app and grind through my reviews... The adding of new cards I do only very rarely now, so getting through the reviews takes only about 10 to 15 minutes. What's crazy now is since starting all this I've had kids, so now the immersion has really ramped up again as I attempt to get them as bilingual as possible. The house is once again filled with the sound of Ghibli :) Sorry for all the extra info, but you really prompted me to reflect on where Ive come after all this time! Thanks
