#CoupleCarReview
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia, full-size, body-on-frame SUV. Bold and stylish the new Toyota Sequoia has great road presence! With its off-road capability, robust performance, spacious interior with seating for up to 8-passengers, the Sequoia is definitely one to consider. The new Toyota Sequoia has a 3.5L twin turbo V6 hybrid with Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive, a 10-speed automatic transmission, a combined 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, standard part time 4WD in Canada, standard RWD in the US. This SUV is all new from the ground up, it offers 8.7” of ground clearance and has standard LED headlights, LED taillights, LED fog lights, power folding exterior mirrors, 18” TRD off road wheels, available 20” and 22” alloy wheels, and a full-size spare tire. The new Toyota Sequoia comes with some nice standard features including, an 8” touchscreen, available 14” touchscreen, a 12.3” digital driver display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker audio system, available JBL, 8-way power adjustable front seats, heated front seats, SoftTex upholstery, heated steering wheel, moonroof, available panoramic sunroof, power rear door with kick sensor. For such a large vehicle, the 8” touchscreen is quite small considering the starting price point of over $79,000 CAD/$58,000 USD. In the US, some of these features are not standard including, a heated steering wheel, SofTex upholstery and a power rear door with kick sensor.
There are plenty of trims to choose from, here’s a breakdown of the pricing:
In Canada, TRD Off Road starts at $79,095 CAD, Limited $81,595 CAD, Platinum $92,095 CAD and Capstone $95,095 CAD.
In the US, SR5 $58,365 USD, Limited $64,765 USD, Platinum $70,965 USD
TRD Pro $76,065 USD and Capstone $75,365 USD.
Fuel economy isn’t really impressive for a hybrid but you are moving around a large vehicle, it gets 12.6L/100 km, 21 MPG city and 10.5L/100 km, 24 MPG highway. In comparison, the Chevrolet Tahoe diesel gets 12L/100 km, 20 MPG city and 8.9L/100 km, 26 MPG highway. Although, it can’t tow as much as the Sequoia, 8400 pounds compared to the Toyota at over 9,000 pounds, the fuel economy is better especially on the highway.

Nowadays these honest reviews are super appreciated. Test drives are almost non existent in Canada. Imagine waiting for your order to arrive in 1-2 years and end up utterly disappointed.

About the MPG, I feel a lot of people got carried away when they heard the word hybrid, they expected this huge SUV to get like 30 maybe 35mpg, but if that was the case, the engine would have to run on the Atkinson cycle, which it doesn't, it would have a CVT, which it doesn't because it is an SUV that needs to tow, and it is heavy and as about aerodynamic as a fridge. This thing was never meant or designed to get good MPG, it is not a hybrid in the sense of a Prius or a RAV4 hybrid it is a hybrid for power and smoothness and especially towing, this thing has more power than virtually any of the gas rivals in its class, except for something like the Cadillac Escalade V, and it has one of the most if not the most torque in its class. Yall are also driving the TRD Pro with the more aggressive treadwear, an in crease in ride height, and it has a rood rail as well, not exactly the best recipe for good fuel economy. The 3rd row is a little disappointing but I don't think it is as big of a deal when you factor in what this vehicle can do offroad and still be able to fit 7 or 8 people decently, its the only truck in its segment to have like actual off-road capabilities, and I know that off-roadability is not the most important thing in this segment but with the Land Cruiser gone, something had to fill in the space, and that was the Sequoia. So I get why you might call this a fail but I don't believe it is as bad as everyone else makes it seem.

I had many Tahoes and Suburbans they had similar issues until they introduced the independent rear suspension. When the independent rear suspension is incorporated the floor can be lowered and there is a footwell for 3rd row. Toyota had to use components from the Tundra to keep the Sequoia viable given its small sales volume. I drive a Tundra Crew Max and a 4 Runner I like both of these vehicles. The Ford Expedition also has the independent rear suspension and has a much lower floor height.
@DCuerpoJr

The problem is the previous generation Sequoia had rear independent suspension, more cabin and cargo capacity.

To me, I like a solid axle in the way of ride and durability, etc... But the last IRS setup was still better than this. What amazes me though is that my 2001 first gen sequoia with a solid axle doesn't have the ledge shown in the back. Yeah I can't fold down the seats, but when I take them out, at least I have a flat floor up to the second Row. How Toyota overcomplicated this gen sequoia is amazing, that in combo with the problematic turbo v6... I'll stay far away (Coming from a 01 sequoia owner (225k miles) and 15 tundra owner(145k miles))

My 2022 Silverado 4x4 with the 5.3 v8 gets 16-18mpg real world. Doesn’t seem like it’s worth risk of the extra tech being unreliable over time to go for the Toyota. Sure does look cool though.

Great review Zach and Andrea, very informative and unbiased. When I first saw this new gen Sequoia at its press release, I knew Toyota got it wrong with this new design. Factor in the abysmal fuel economy too and it indeed is a rare miss for Toyota. Every reviewer's take I've seen on this new Sequoia has a similar theme. Among the common complaints like you covered are an unrefined ride, gas guzzling fuel economy especially given it's a hybrid, poorly designed interior layout/functionality with the cramped third row and no flat loading floor (in the traditional sense) Given it's dimensions the cargo capacity overall is very uncompetitive with other brands in this class. The afterthought cargo shelves to alleviate the flat loading floor situation to me seems like a compromise to a design fault rather than an innovative design from Toyota (I understand the hybrid battery pack is incorporated under the third-row seats, so that decision has greatly affected the cargo set-up). No full time AWD/4WD offered in the States. On the plus side, plenty of power, competitive with towing numbers and it's a Toyota so it should be reliable. For a newly designed vehicle and for those Sequoia fans waiting for this for what seems like an eternity to make it to market, overall, this has to be a disappointment.

what a great review - thank you !! I had a 2003 Sequoia and wow, I loved that except for the gas mileage. If I recall that model correctly, the 3rd row not only moved forward and backward but also could tumble forward as well as be removed. It appears the 2023 sits on that platform as electronics may be underneath the seats (electronic fold and recline). That causing loss of headroom. It doesn't seem customer input or focus groups were considered for design. I had a QX80 so I might have to go back too that as it has more room in the caboose. What a shame...

Last week in Yosemite I saw a Sequoia and Tahoe parked side by side and I much prefer Tahoe's styling especially in light gray (white-ish) color and black wheels! In general new Toyota /Lexus products have sacrificed quiet and plush cabin for sport which I think is a huge mistake.

Good morning, Mark from NJ here… besides the negative comments, aesthetically I think it looks nice and at least it is all new and provides insight into where Toyota is going with its trucks. …. This is basically a Tundra with a closed cab. Does this reveal any influence for what the GX new design might incorporate? I’m looking for clues. I drive a 2011 Avalon Limited that I bought new, 167,463 miles on him so far, everyday driver, love it, never an issue mechanically but the seats on a long drive over two hours cut my circulation off!!. .. and the drivers leather seat has a tear in it, not the most durable leather, I’m 5’10” and weigh 185 so perhaps average sized man so it is not abused in my view, my only complaints really. I have to add its pearl white and the paint began bubbling and flaking off after 7 years and Toyota re-painted it for me and gave me a loaner! Was impressed they stood behind it, grateful! Hey, you guys have any idea about the GX forthcoming in terms of what it might look like and when it might arrive?… I’m waiting patiently on the new GX release, don’t wanna buy a new, old one, and I trust Toyota/Lexus new releases so I’m ok with diving in, but only will wait until year end cause who know, it could be a century before they ever release an all new one and I ain’t got that kinda time… 😂 love the videos, faithful follower, stay warm, be well !

I completely agree, it seems like Toyota designers were deprived of their morning coffee when they designed the interior of this vehicle... that back seat fold-down is laughable old-school and the second seat arrangement makes one just scratch their head in wonder... it's like they called back their long-retired engineers to come back for the redesign and they just retreaded old archaic layouts... I guess Toyota has to make some mistakes but, this is overkill.

On the same architecture, I will definitely take a Tundra instead. At least full-size truck makes more sense than SUV, when it comes to practicality. Otherwise, I will just go grab a Telluride or CX-90, if I need a 7-seating SUV.

I just don’t understand what they were doing with the drivetrain. I actually wish they would have tried a similar hybrid setup with the Atkinson cycle that they use in other products. Except make it a V8 with 2 large electric motors in the rear, each controlling one of the rear wheels. Feel like it would almost certainly have better fuel economy, good torque from the electric motors, and it’s not like they didn’t already compromise the space in the back so the batteries wouldn’t make too much of a difference on the back seat room.

Have a $500 deposit for a Sequoia Platinum model but just about to cancel. Going to Chicago auto show this weekend to look at the new Grand Highlander. Depending on what I think I may pursue it, otherwise I'll be ordering a Sienna. I've rented several and they aren't bad. Would prefer a bit more power as I worry how it would perform with all seats filled. That won't happen often though as it will mostly have 2 - 4 occupants. Regarding the Sequoia. The fuel economy worries me not because I'm worried about the cost but it pisses me off to buy a vehicle that says it should get X when it really gets far less than X. The rear storage space is ridiculous. Lexus LX600 doesn't offer the hybrid and its rear seat is flat - seats fold flat and there isn't a lifted platform from the batteries. I'm sure I would love a Lexus LX600 and if they don't feel the need then I really don't need it on a Sequoia.

Oh boy do I dislike these extra large SUVs/Truck vehicles. I only ever see one man in these and I am talking about on the weekends in the summer. A whole family should be loaded in them but are often not. Thanks for the review btw. Always entertaining to watch the both of you. Ps. Toyota needs to discontinue this and make this a limited offering only. Poor fuel mileage is a no no these days with $1.50 gas and EVs running around you.

I was looking forward to this release and then I saw how small the third seat and storage area was. Those are the reasons I am about to buy a Tahoe instead. I wish that wasn't the case.

Motormouth reviews are so well done. Best in the business. Many thanks! Any idea when you’ll have a review of the Nissan Ariya?

Thank you very much for the kind words. We were invited on a Nissan Ariya drive event at the end of March but unfortunately, we are already booked up with a trip to New York. We will have to wait for Nissan to bring it in the press fleet in Vancouver. Probably sometime in April.

Keep in mind that to get better fuel economy in a GM full size, you'd need the diesel and diesel fuel can be quite a bit more than the regular gas that the Sequoia takes.

Also keep in mind. Sequoia is TWIN TURBO. Yes sure it’s a hybrid. But we all should know that turbo/boosted cars will eat more gas

You guys are experts here but let me add one thing. When I purchased my 2021 2.4L Tucson, for first year, the fuel economy that my Car showed me on digital cluster was between 16L-19L/100km. After a year and 2 service, it became better and after 2 years now, as of today, I get 10.2-11.5L/100km in city and 8.6-9.2L/100km on highway. Not sure if new cars do this ?

Brutally honest review. Thanks for taking the gloves off on the Sequoia. People will buy it for the Toyota badge, but I'd rather have a Tahoe or Suburban turbo diesel. Well done.

Just another comment on towing…similar to half tons, you likely won’t get close to that 9000 lb tow rating. From what I can tell, the payload on the model your testing is about 1400 lbs (GVWR of 7500) definitely comparable to some half tons, but once you add people and cargo it’ll be limited for the hitch weight. Personally I wouldn’t go heavier than a 6000-6500 (unloaded) weight for a trailer.

After developing the Tundra, Toyota really phoned in the Sequoia. It's basically just a Tundra with an enclosed cab and a third row. GM,Ford and Jeep all learned a generation ago that full-size SUV buyers demand more than a pickup with an enclosed cab and third row. They demand a unique interior, an automatic AWD system, an independent rear suspension and an uncompromised third row. It does have a strong powertrain, though. Overall 6.8/10.

I've put on about 1500 miles on my 2023 trd pro and I'm averaging 16.7 mpg. I think the mileage might suffer from the roof rack. Really puzzled why your mileage was so poor. I absolutely love mine after trading in 2021 Tundra TRD Pro.

That third row seat design with the unmovable captain chair (second row) is a massive fail in my opinion. could it just be a first year design error coming from Toyota?

I had just watched your CX-90 introduction video a few days ago, and I have to say I prefer the Mazda. Are these two vehicles even competitors? Or am I comparing apples to oranges? The Mazda seems to be so much more useful (packaging wise).

The famous Land Cruiser was just discontinued in the United States (though available abroad). I think Toyota is assuming that North Americans might mistake (or consider) this Sequoia for one. It isn’t. It just isn’t. The Sequoia has never been cheap, but at this price there are so many better non-hybrid options. So if you really really like RAV4s and really want to spend about or over hundred thousand dollars! (taxes/financing)… get out your crayons and write a cheque out for what will never ever be… a legendary Land Cruiser. Thanks for the video.
