#CoupleCarComparison
This is a couple car comparison of the all-new Mazda CX-50 VS the updated Toyota RAV4 compact SUVs. The Mazda CX-50 has two powertrain options including a turbo and the Toyota RAV4 three, gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. In our comparison, we’ll be focusing on the base gas engine as Mazda doesn’t have an electrified option yet and the RAV4 doesn’t have a turbo. A CX-50 hybrid is on the way and should be available next year.
Both have a 2.5L 4-cylinder, the CX-50 is matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, the RAV4 an 8-speed automatic with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota has both FWD and AWD options, the Mazda standard AWD.
The CX-50 is 4” longer than the RAV4 and offers about half an inch more front legroom and 2” more second row space. The Toyota comes out on top for cargo space, behind the second row it has an extra 6 cubic feet or 176 litres and overall cargo space an extra 13.5 cubic feet or 382 litres.
The RAV4 and CX-50 have similar available features. For technology, the CX-50 has a standard 10.25” display with Mazda connect. In the US, it’s an 8.8” screen but the larger version is available one up from the base model. The RAV4 comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, available 8” and 9”. The Mazda gets wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the Toyota wired. The RAV4 has either cloth or SofTex upholstery, the Mazda cloth, leatherette or leather. Other available features depending on trim level on both vehicles include, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, power driver and passenger seats, a power liftgate, wireless charger, 360-view monitor and front and rear parking sensors.
In Canada, the RAV4 has a moonroof but a panoramic sunroof is available in the US. The CX-50 has a standard panoramic sunroof in Canada, it is available in the US starting on the Preferred Plus trim. For sound systems, the Mazda has an available Bose system and the Toyota a JBL audio system.
The CX-50 starts at $37,900 CAD/$26,800 USD. The Preferred Plus trim for $31,940 USD is more equivalent to the base model in Canada.
At Canada Drives you can buy your car 100% online and have it delivered straight to your doorstep. Once delivered, you have a full 7 days to love it or return it.

I wanted a RAV4 Limited, waited a few weeks with no luck on dealer allocations plus all the dealers were charging insane markups in my area, ended up finding a CX-50 on the lot and got it same day about 2 weeks ago. No regrets.

2023 CX 50 : Trim to trim, 3 to 4K US lower price than 2022 RAV4, and it’s made in Toyota plant USA with Toyota quality control. Rav4: 1 year older than CX 50, usually goes for higher dealer markups and you can’t shake off that rental car feeling. Yea it looks utilitarian but still quality doesn’t mach the high price. Want Toyota products go for Toyota Venza or Lexus NX... Long story short 2019 design vs 2023.

I've already seen multiple CX-50s on the roads of Florida...very impressive looking. The number of variations available for Toyota is also impressive. I expect reliability will be fairly close to even...I would go with the more stylish option. I would roll with the CX-50....the upcoming off road editions are going to be sick.

I ended up not going with the Subaru Forester Premier after all and ordered a Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid Limited in Ruby Flare Pearl. The interior of the Forester is so beautiful and definitely feels more luxurious but, the thought of filling my car up less was extremely appealing. Thank you for the video, great comparison again ... a difficult choice ! Mazda is the better looking vehicle yet requires more fuel with its 6 speed transmission. Toyota Rav4, jeep-like square front end and a bit noisier because of the ''smart'' engine using both direct injection and port injection, to keep the valves clean. On the other hand, a possible better engine in the course of time , using less fuel. Since Mazda had already the CX-5, a CX-50 ''Hybrid option'' , this year, would have been wise, putting them in a better position to compete, however, I understand that Mazda is a smaller car company and patience is required.

We had a 2021 RAV4 as rental a few weeks back and then I rented a 2022 CX-5 a week after that. Given the CX-50 is a step up from the CX-5, it would be a no brainer for me. The RAV4’s interior was more spacious, seats were great and the interior usability was fantastic. But the comparison ends there, it was noisy and drove like a 1981 Ford pickup. Easily the worst driving vehicle I’ve ever been in. I’d gladly take the fuel economy hit and less space. The CX-5 blew away the RAV4 for me, without question…I would imagine the CX-50 would be even better.

What’s great review!!!! I kick myself everyday because I used to have a 2015 Mazda 6 GT and traded it in 2019 for a RAV4 Adventure because Mazda didn’t offer an off-road ish crossover (not a fan of the more posh, bulbous looking CX-5). Now that Mazda has the CX-50 I’m gonna have to figure out a way to get into one, especially once they release the meridian edition. Much more upscale/premium looking (I enjoy slightly rugged ish mixed with premium feeling), and with the annoying issues that I’ve had with this RAV4 I won’t buy another Toyota. Mazda for me once I get out of this tin can (yes, the awd system literally goes clank, clank, clank as you’re coming to a stop and are driving with the windows down). @Magsbravo 2 года назад
What’s the reason for not being a fan of torsion beam? Please explain
@denisleblanc4506
@denisleblanc4506 2 года назад
@@Magsbravo Its because both wheels are linked by a beam. It means when one wheel bounces the other wheel will be affected. It doesn't have any affect when on smooth roads but on rougher dirt roads and washboards, the wheel can bounce enough to loose contact with the dirt. This can be disconcerting at higher speeds going around a curve. Independent rear suspension is lighter weight so it can be easier to control this bounce without adding any harshness to the ride. The main advantage of the torsion beam is( like he said) cost cutting. Honda tried it in the Civic and abandoned it, now you see it on lower version of some compact and sub compact cars. It also help in packaging and was popular in mini vans for a wider lower load floor. Not something I would expect in an expensive vehicle.

The sooner the Rav gets an infotainment system that is derived from the new NX and the Tundra the better. Even if it's the only change. I own the cx50 turbo and have put on 2800 miles over past 4 weeks. Probably 2/3 was highway. Average mpg so far is 27. Drove them all before this ; RAV4 hybrid, CRV, RDX, Bronco sport. This handles and drives fantastic.

It used to be that Mazda was a great value. Premium feel without the premium price. Their new car prices have crept up in the past few years and you can get a BMW X1 for the price of the Mazda if you are looking at the higher trims and the BMW has a great deal more technology.

I was torn between these two models, getting Toyota to remove their $4k mark-up fees and therefore making it just a bit cheaper than the CX-50, made the RAV4 the easy choice. Also, in my opinion, the exterior look of the Rav4 is just better

IMO, we need to see the hybrid solution for Mazda. I think Mazda may still qualify for tax credit in the US, where Toyota may not.

Everyone keeps talking about this Mazda being more “fun” to drive but RAV4 is better all around to me and looks more like an suv than the Mazda, much more gas efficient, more space, looks better, simple and clean. Happily waiting for mine to get here in about 4 weeks.

Maxda CX-5 owner ( 2018 ) and prior had Rev 4 ( 2006 ). I jokingly refer to the Rev 4 as the refrigerator of SUV. Totally bland and devoid of any driving excitement. I am mid 50's , so older but not so old that I don't enjoy driving dynamics and exciting interiors. Honestly , if you can afford a brand new car you can afford the fuel to get it down the road. Mazda really is the ZOOM ZOOM brand , and still smile when I take the. wifes Mazda on a trip.

Long term reliability, paint quality and resale value will make the RAV4 a better choice. Plus the hybrid is an option now and $2 + Litre gas makes it an even better choice. Comparing the top turbo CX50 with the larger tires as a better handling vehicle was not fair either, Lol.

Mazda's pricing is really creeping up. I'm guessing the Hybrid will easily be 50 in Canada. Mazda has worse in mpg and smaller. We own a 2020 cx5 for reference. Where is a cx70 or the new 9 going to be priced when this torsion beam equipped cx50 is at 45k? I'll wait to see a CRV hybrid.

Not a fan of either one really, in terms of the styling or size. I prefer my vehicles smaller & sleeker, & went with a 2022 Mazda CX-30 CE (with zero issues/problems after 13 months thus far). Based on my problematic 2020 model year Toyota experience (built in Japan no-less), Toyota doesn't build them like they used to, so good luck rolling the dice on your next Toyota or new car purchase in general. Build quality & reliability seem more potluck than ever now.

We don't have a problem with a simpler suspension (especially for non-enthusiast cars) we have a problem when we don't feel the savings are being passed onto the consumer. And there in lies the rub. Mazda CAN'T claim to be premium when they dumb down the car. They use the "3" platform to spin off a CX-50, a vehicle which is effectively on an inferior platform to the CX-5. But we called it the "50" so it's gotta be better, right? At least VW didn't try to charge more for the Atlas over the Touareg. The Atlas is bigger and has more room but it's riding on an FF platform vs the Touareg which is riding on an FR platform. But hey, most soccer moms can't tell the difference so who cares right?

The leather seats on either one will not go over very well here in Arizona. Imagine setting your cheeks down on a hot leather seat when it's 110 degrees outside, and the inside is butt screaming- red rash on your a**...every time you get in, & the steering wheel is the same on your hands. It's even hot on the inside using a sun screen, so using a towel on the seat(s), work out gloves for the hot steering wheel, & leaving your/a window cracked open (about 1 finger) so the glass won't crack. I would prefer the CX-50, as I have a 2015 Mazda 3 2.0 with 187,000 on it, & it keeps on moving, as a testament to reliability of Mazda products. Just saying.

You can't win with a : RAV 4 (Prime excluded): Nice interior, generous space but Weak engine with no turbo option. CX-50 : fast turbo available, but hard short seats and stiff suspension. Not for those seeking a comfy ride. CRV : CVT with tiny whiney turbo engine. But nice interior and generous interior space. Best option ? : Jeep Cherokee : unreliable transmission, with powerful V6, comfy seats, reliable Uconnect. Loaded with nice features but Spartan looking interior. Decisons..decisions..
