Today, TaylorMade announces the all-new P·790, with each iron individually designed to perform exactly how they believe golfers need it.
Using AI-optimized construction, the fourth-generation P790’s use a unique internal structure on each individual iron.
Ian puts these to the test with a bonus comparison to the 2021 P790s!
"P·790 is a collision of art and engineering. The allure lies not only in the clean design and visual
appeal, but also in the high-performance machine that lives within. It’s the total package, an
ideal blend of external elegance and internal power.”

I like that Taylor Made is staying loyal to this design. It has an almost timeless look that doesn’t lose it’s appeal. I’ve never played them, but I always give them the eye. You guys are getting that deep tour player suntan.

I really love how they keep the look is so clean and classic. I currently game the 2021 p790's, about an 18 hdcp, mostly due to my inconsistent tee shots and wedge game, putting also needs improved. My iron distance gap is right at 15 yards and am ok with it. My general iron game (6-9) and getting back to the fairway from bad tee shots is pretty decent and keeps me kind of looking like I know how to play, somewhat, lol. I think I may to have a upgrade to the 2023's just to have a new set when I wear out my current set.

I think I might be the only person who actually loves how the ‘21 P790 sounds. In a hitting bay it sounds too loud but outside where you actually play I love it. It has a very distinct “thwack” that I think makes it easy to know exactly where you hit it. Center sounds like a gun shot crack. Toe sounds like a dead thwack and heel sounds dull, muted, and much quieter to my ear. I know exactly what the balls going to do and can tell where I need to try to move my strike for the day after only a few balls. Key word there is try.

I have had the 6-AW in the gen 3 P790 since Jan this year and love them. The gapping with them spot on for me. I switched out the 4 iron for a 22° Stealth plus hybrid and the 5 iron for the Stealth 5 25° DHY which has worked out perfectly for me.

very similar to me... 22 hybrid and I've considered replacing my 5i with a DHY or hybrid. I had the AW but replaced it with a cleveland CBX zipcore 50... just feel a bit more confident with the cleveland aw, plus I like using it around the greens. As for gapping, I don't really notice until I get toward the wedges but i've learned to hit half shots to fill in the gaps.

The flier issue is the biggest issue I have the P790 2019 model that I have. I have progressed a bit as a better center ball striker as I have gotten back into game and I occasionally will find myself hitting one 15 yards farther than I 'should' hit it. When you launch an 8 iron 155 yards after expecting 140 yards then you can predict a problem. Other than that I have little to complain with the P790s. I love the P770s but I am still not good enough, or strong enough to make them my regular clubs. As a 'slower' swinger I haven't had a problem with the gapping, at least with the lower irons. Maybe you guys are better strikers of the longer irons which leads to a cause for concern but I don't mind the 120 yard PW since my 8 iron is about 140-145 and my 5 iron is about 170 with the earlier generation. I haven't noticed a real issue in my case. If I swing my Sim2s then, yes, I can get a 135 yard PW but then it is way out from my 54 and 60 degree wedges from 100 yards in. I get what you are saying here but in my world the gapping isn't bad.
@bvanlieu
@bvanlieu Год назад
The boys are higher end players and know they need to tweak those lofts to get a better 12y or so gapping :) TM has always done goofy things with lofts here, going 5d in scoring clubs, 4.5, 4 down to 2 between 3-4 iron. I find weaking the mid irons (I blend these with 770s) really helps dial it back to 12ish gapping. 770s have traditional 4d gapping up to the 5-4-3 which. This is why we (say it together) get fitted :D

I've been playing these since 2017. Currently using my TXG built 2019 790's (4-AW) with 110 Steelfiber shafts. I'm a 4 handicap and my only issue I've seen with both generations is the distance gap between 9 and PW. I can carry my 9 easily 145-150 yet I struggle to get my PW over 125. I'm forced to choke down on my 9 or smooth one which I'm not a fan of. I still think they are an amazing iron for a very wide handicap range. The build is top notch from the boys, as expected. Nice honest review Ian, especially with the same concerns on the PW.

I'm currently playing the 2019 version and can attest that from 9-4, they are consistent on gapping. Even with the speed slot on the 7, vs. the 8, they are spot on. Like I and Ian mentioned, the concern is from 9-PW. That's where (in my experience on the 1st and 2nd gens) the problem arises. I've thought about taking my PW to 44 or 43 but then my AW is way off. It's a bit of a dilemma. 1st world problems.

@colonelangus3826 Год назад
That’s a great idea however it would have absolutely no value to anyone but the hitter. Gapping, especially with clubs with lots of technology, is very dependent on swing speed. That’s why fitting is so important. Most people have no business carrying a 4 or even 5 iron and in many cases people will get minimal carry distance changes (sometimes even lose yardage if they can’t get proper height).

Would love to hear your thoughts on gapping. When working with elite players and their coaches, they work to gap at 10% of 7i ball speed. In this example, Ian's 7i ball speed is approximately 125, which would put gapping at 12-13 yards. Thoughts? Possibly a video on gapping?

I own a set of the 2021 P790's and i don't seem to have any struggle with flyers that are being reported here. At least none that cant be explained by other factors. The only time i see a large random "jumper" is either a pulled shot, which is completely on me, or having a flyer lie with grass between the ball and clubhead. These irons definitely produce less spin than my 2019 apex pros and i suspect the spin rate drops so much in this case that it knuckles and turns it closer to driver spin rates. To give you an idea what i mean. I actually purchased a GC Quad for myself and installed a simulator in my home last winter. I easily played 50 rounds and had countless hours of practice on top of that. Never once did i see a random ball exceed my expected yardage by more than 5 yds perhaps. My swing speeds matches "Muni" Mikes pretty closely for reference.

Might need to try these. My problem is high handicap (a lot to do with driver and reading the green) as a newer golfer but i have a pretty high swing speed. So far fitters just throw me into the biggest “most forgiving” iron because of strike inconsistency which tends to be hollow powerbats and i am out there cranking a 7 iron 200 yards and get the oh yea look at that selling me on yardage. So at what point do you have to go to a maybe more compact but more consistent head but lose the help on bad strikes until you get better? Or what would be good to look at?

I have a different problem than yours, I have low club yardage. Like, 140 ot 150 my 7 iron. At first the fitter also wanted to put me on a set with larger clubheads, higher launch, and more forgiveness. But I don't want to spend the money to get fitted into a iron set and then improve my game and end up with a new iron set in 1-2 years. I made it clear I want irons that force me to strike more consistent and with better face angle. I got these irons and started playing in February. I'm still improving my strike but I'm much more consistent now. I still need to work on my swing but I've gotten 200 yards total on my 5 iron on the range.

It does seem like their (Taylormade's) response to people complaining about OEMs simply jacking the lofts, was to spread out the loft gaps from the 8 to 9 and 9 to PW and PW to GW. But it sure seems like they could have held a more traditional 4* gap between those clubs, and thrown in a ~47-48* gap/approach wedge. Most of the target players for this club aren't going to have the 3 or 4 in the bag (or the 5 iron if we're honest with ourselves), so we're talking about a 6-G setup with 6 irons.

Agree. And then change the numbering to be traditional 5I to PW!
@CoryLancasterYT
@CoryLancasterYT Год назад
@@zazhouThis is it right here! Then the gap wedge is back at the traditional 52* and the OEMs don't sell those crazy jacked long irons that few need anyways!

Crazy to me that they would take all the tech out in the shorter irons more so when you think about the target market for these players. You'd think if a better player would need this change then they would just go a combo set.

I'm playing the '19 P790s and currently a 2.2 index. I originally went with them for the yardage gains. I'm losing speed as I get older. My gaps are decreasing as well. About 10y now. Exception is between 9 & 8 which is about 15y. I've been playing long enough to know how strike quality impacts shot performance. My only complaint with my 790s is the occasional juiced strike that produces an extra 20+ yards. I've had a few that were +40. Have these new heads eliminated those "boosted" shots?

You have to try them to see, but I can only speak for myself. I was just fit for these after 2 hours of testing. I put them up against my current set (MP18 MMC and MP18 mixed set) as well as the Mizuno 223 I think it is? Whichever is comparable and the P770. With the 7 iron I was averaging 165 carry with my MMC, 176 with the 790, 180 with the 223 and I think it was right around 170 with the 770's. The thing that struck me with the 790's was the dispersion, it was super tight and I didn't have one juiced shot in 2 hours of testing. I think I maybe had one that went 185 or so, but for today my angle of attack was poor as I was hitting slightly positive. If they do have those juiced shots I couldn't find one, but this is controlled conditions.

I play a 47-degree PW, so these numbers are familiar to me. Carry it 130-132. Not what I'd expect in the 790, though. The person who's buying this probably wants something more.

Hey, your pw numbers may be a faster club speed than pros but your launch angle is almost 28 degrees. pros have an average launch angle of 24 degrees. There’s your yardage differences, right?

I dunno but isn’t P790 the best selling irons they’ve ever produced? That being the case they’re keeping the recipe as is and just tweaking it here and there.

PW threw me off but 7 iron made more sense to me. You swing 92ish and carry 180ish. When I got fitted I was swinging 96-98 and carrying 190 which is 15 yards more than my M4 irons were

I just bought these today lol. I was gaming Mizuno MP18's with a mixed set (MMC 5-7, MP18 8-PW) and while they worked great, I could hit my 7 iron anywhere from 155 on a poor hit to close to 190 on a perfectly struck hit. What I liked about the 790's was the dispersion, even on slightly toe or heel shots I lost or gained maybe 5 yards on the same trajectory. I wasn't even hitting down on it very well, most of my angle of attack was slightly positive. For comparison, the 7 iron was pretty similar results to what he was hitting here, I think I was averaging around 176 with 90mph club head and 5600 spin and a great angle of descent. I think the key we these clubs is the shaft, I went from Nippon Pro 1150GH to Project X IO 6.0 which shocked me, but that's what worked best for me. For reference, I am an 8 handicap.

Just a note: Comparing old Trackman data to the data you get from GC-Quad is gonna end up beefing some numbers up and holding back others. Just saying since it seems to be the talking point of the video (outside of the testing)

Gents this club is NOT designed for a player with Ian's skill level. That said, Ronnie would be an ideal candidate to give the New P790 a test run.

@CHuzz7777
@CHuzz7777 Год назад
It’s a good question. On paper they’re aimed at very different golfers but at the same time I do wonder just how much more “forgiving” P790 could be. I love the idea of a good looking, solid construction iron with no plastic glued to it and honestly, I think I’d accept a small drop off in forgiveness to get it.

Is there "enough" difference between the 790 and the 770?
@trxe420
@trxe420 Год назад
I tested both today and for me the 790 was longer for sure, but not by much. The biggest difference was the dispersion, the 790's just tracked more consistently for me where as the 770's were slightly less forgiving.
