I have held off for 11 months since originally watching this review, at age 67 decided i needed some distance help without compromising on fun playing golf. Part of fun is aesthetics, and these still look appealing whilst certainly delivering on dispersion and distance. I was fitted, and referred the fitter to your review, you might have another sub, my swing speed was 87 with 7 iron, so these performed really well. Hopefully they will see my golf life out, and you can tell your TM rep, you definitely influenced at least one sale, although i suspect there would have been many. Thanks for your very interesting and informative vids, as a golf nerd i am always absorbed.
Although I don't think Taylormade care too much about what I do or don't say (they haven't reached out to me at all to become a media partner) I always deliver my findings in the most manageable and helpful way I can, so I'm really glad that my video helped you out and your Fitter. As time has gone on I have changed and molded my review structure to meet the constructive feedback gained from the comments, so I'm glad my unique review process helped you make a decision which was right for you. Thank you for the kind feedback 👍
Great video, Jay! Thank you thank you thank you for the slower speed testing. Even just a few swings at different speeds is very helpful to those of us who don't carry 7-iron 180 yards. And whatever people tell you - that's most of us. I have a set of the 2021 P790s and my 7-iron speed is high 70s. Carry is right around 150-155, and I don't have any trouble at all stopping the ball with them. But as you pointed out, my delivery is different and I don't deloft as much as a lot of guys. When I experiment on the range with a LOT of deloft and Rahm/DJ wrist angles I get a huge jump in ball speed and more carry, but the flight also gets SUPER flat, because I'm not producing enough overall speed to get proper height. But it's a cool shot to have when you need it. It's like a 170-yard bump and run.
Great review. Particularly like the fact you test different swing speeds and the decent angles and spin. Not many reviews on YT do this, they all seem to be hitting it >110mph!! You have gained yourself a subscriber 😀
Thank you very much for the kind feedback, I have done this multiple swing speed testing more and more as time goes on (takes a lot more time to do) and I find to more useful for the average golfer to know. Also my forgiveness data I don't know of anyone else that spends the time capturing this which again I think is important for average golfers to know 👍🏻 Welcome to the AskGolfNut community 😊👍🏻
Jay…got a look at the new MP 241/243/245 heads 2 days ago. Slightly shorter toe to heel; 241 is smaller, narrower sole. 245 has up to ~28g in the sole area..also slightly smaller head, less bulky. You’ll love to test them .
My reviews have evolved over the years, now to a point where equipment is tested at 3 different swing speeds and also it's forgiveness tested from multiple strikes from different strike locations to measure ball speed drop off... Its my hope that golfers that know their own patterns of misses can more easily see what irons may or may not work for them based on this information. It's much so more in depth but then again golf equipment nowadays isn't cheap so making sure any purchase is done so informed is key 👍🏻👍🏻
Trying to Ron, the forgiveness part does take a long while to create and produce, I've got a growing list of reviews and compares to do so I'll work as fast as I can 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice review as always. Could you perhaps try to get to review the Wishon 585PC. It’s a combo set with blades gap wedge - 8 iron and cavity back 7-4. It’s a beautiful set of irons. They should be available through Diamond golf. Which I believe is based in England.
I got fitted for these yesterday. I was swinging high 70’s low 80’s with an MMT regular shaft and the ball was going to the moon (compared to my Ping G irons) and carrying around the 160 mark with a decent angle of around the 44-47 mark. On the verge of handing over an enormous amount of cash!!
@@AskGolfNut Depends, I wanted to try graphite because of an ongoing tendinitis issue and that adds to the cost plus I have big hands and like the Golf Pride mid size +4 grips. All in I’d imagine they’d be about £1200 for 5 - PW. Still considering trying the MP225’s which I expect would be a similar cost.
Great review again. P790 or zx4 for forgiveness? Which one is better in your opinion for forgiveness? And which one is easier to hit? Just another great review. Cheers from Australia
The tungsten placement would have more effect on low strike efficiency than the slot, it must work, but I feel its possibly there more to stabilise the whole face flexing giving uniformity rather than specific location help 👍🏻 👍🏻
Thanks for the review! Would love to see this one against he Mizuno Pro 225 as well if you get a chance. Also, Bayou is pronounced "BYE-you" (at least around here in Louisiana, USA), like the song Blue Bayou by Linda Ronstadt.
I’m with you…not sure how the 2021 version P790 got so much hype…terrible feeling club (actually a non feeling club). Glad that has improved. I’d hate for newer golfers starting their golf career playing a set of the 2021 P790s and never enjoying the feel of a center strike…
Did you ever hit the original 2017 p790, and do you think there is that much of a difference between the two? Biggest thing I have heard that’s kept me from gaming the 2017’s is fliers/hot spots
I did try it but never in a fully review situation so only anecdotal info which is basically as useful as your mate saying how good something is when he can hardly make contact with the ball himself 🤣🤣
The Stealth is slightly stronger lofted so will more distance inspired, forgiveness will also be slightly greater in the larger Stealth but surprisingly the P790 does very well. On balance it would definitely my pick 👍🏻
Hi thanks for the comment. Fortunately for me I'm not shaft sensitive and have done loads of content in the past demonstrating that for me personally that changes in shaft bend profile or weight have next to no difference. I'm absolutely not saying that shaft doesn't matter, shaft matters massively for the vast vast majority of golfers, it's just how I transition at the top of my swing I dont load the shaft in a way that causes me to be sensitive to changes. This is very handy due to most manufacturers sending samples out in many different options. I am lie sensitive though so although not all manufacturers are able to send out custom samples, there are some that tweak the lie angle to suit my ground interaction 👍🏻
I hit the 2023 P790 yesterday and as much as I liked them and am on the verge of buying them I wouldn’t say they were soft or buttery. Everyone’s perception of this might be slightly different though.
