I am about 1/3 the way through the book. My husband was in Vietnam and our son fought in Iraq in 2007 and 2008. I appreciate your thoughts on this book and I want to see the movie but the older version of the movie. A really good book I read while I was in college was man's search for meaning based on the author's experience in various Nazi concentration camps. Viktor Frankl. Don't miss it.

Glad to hear you're reading this, I'm sure you have a unique perspective on it. I did read "Man's Search For Meaning", also in college and again later in life. It is indeed a great book with some great ideas. Thanks for the comment!

This was a re-read, but after nearly 20 years it was almost a new book to me.

This book has been on my radar because of the award winning adaptation. And it's also in the 1000 Books to Read Before You Die list/book by James Mustich. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's also amazing how well reviewed this novel (in translation) is. The original translation was by A.W. Wheen in 1929.

It's certainly worth a read, and it's quite short so you it's easy to get through. Please let me know what you think of it if you do read it.

Did you enjoy the book more now that you’re older? I’ve been meaning to read it for a while now, but I hear it’s depressing.

That's an excellent question and point -- yes, being 30 years older now has certainly changed how I appreciate it. Now I see a much deeper tragedy, that being the loss of young adulthood and hope across a generation of men and women.
