I thought Chloe was sadder. Not by her reaction, but by the context of her and his relationship. She always knew she wasnt good enough to be apart of his life in that way, but then theres that very slight hope she gets when Chloe is called to the shrine. All for it to be taken away.

Hot take: no hat to melisandre fans but, the melisandre one pissed me off- Like yeah, i know she genuinely loved him, but unlike scarlett alain has literal no connection to her, and she was the one who approached him- Like girl why you glaring that way for? Your the one who even suggested a harem when he does not even know you- Only scarlett legit has that right and even then i dont think alain is meaning to be mean in universe too when he says that. Basically, i feel like some of these are very rude overreactions based on the characters tbh
To be very fair, being invited to the shrine of the maiden when you have a very good relationship with the prince (max rapport) is bound to create expectations. Having those expectations only to be met with a _"sorry, I think there's been a mistake"_ is devastating for anyone.
@Seeking_Solace also a but trolly it's like giving a max bond ship girl anticipating a ring of promise a turrent not possible but am sure the ship girl would be disappointed a bit
What? lol The purpose of building rapport is to show you that Alain is forming serious bonds with these people. By the time they are at max and being invited to the shrine its implied they have a very strong relationship. Literally any girl: "Hmm, the prince who I have grown very close with just invited me to the shrine where he is supposed to pick his wife/partner" Alain: "Sorry I actually don't like you" If you did this to someone in real life they'd have every right to be pissed. Its emotional manipulation whether Alain is intending it to be or not. The fact nobody does much more than act shocked and hurt is astounding.
I think is the most human response from someone that openly declared to Alain, just to get rejected in the shrine of the maiden that himself bring upon. Also she's just dissapointed and that's understandable, but look to Virginia that was a really rude response.
