You gotta remember, the first Sonic game is multiple decades old by now, yet it's always the same iconic "You boutta die kid" theme. Constantly over the years, it was at max adapted to the new sound systems, but otherwise nearly unchanged.

This music conveys the exact experience of a panic attack. Probably because panic attacks can make you feel like you are drowning (At least from my experience). Both experiences put you in fight or flight mode because of a perceived threat (one where you are fighting to stay alive, the other where you are fighting out of fear of going crazy or losing control. The only difference is that others can see threat, but in the other case they can’t). For panic attacks despite the threat not being seen physically by others, the threat and terror feels very real to someone who is experiencing it. The two also share similar feelings. Terror (due to the fear of dying which is present in both situations) and Helplessness. Both scenarios are usually silent ( Just want to note: Panic Attacks can range from being very noticeable due to intense crying, or in my case could be silent and no one else could really pick up I was going through it). Both scenarios start out slowly and then escalate as time goes on (Another Note: Panic Attacks can also hit you out of nowhere like a train, but in my case they usually start out as a feeling of anxiety that escalates in intensity). You find it hard to breathe, hard to speak to tell others what’s happening to you. You make attempts to signal to others that something is very wrong but, they might not pick up on it until it’s too late (Drowning person dies or goes unconscious and is out of direct sight. For panic attacks, they pass out, go numb or disassociate in more extreme cases. Which can make the person feel like they aren’t really there or the people or environment around them not feel real which can make the person feel like they have died inside and their body is being operated on auto pilot). This theme actually gives me anxiety, when I was a kid it scared me. I like the orchestral version used in Colors/ World the most, they took this panic theme and made it sound pretty cool

The sonic drowning soundtrack is such a bop to me. It appears in almost every game of sonic. And of course it can be heard in fangames and Mario paint. This soundtrack is terrifying but a bop. I love this soundtrack.
