For Big and Blaze being the same species but having vastly different appearances, I would argue that they could just be different breeds of cats. I don't know if they are based on particular breeds of cats respectively, but that makes the most logical sense to me.

You left out the Conductor, His Wife, and Barry from TMoStH (And yes they are canon to IDW because of the latest IDW Sonic Winter Jam issue that they had a cameo) The Conductor and his wife are Dogs, while Barry is a Quokka.

When you brought up dogs I first thought "Sonic has dog characters?" and then I thought "why doesn't Sonic have dog characters?" I mean, I like how diverse and obscure Sonic can be with the animals they choose to anthropromorize but I feel like adding at least one dog into the cast is a no brainer.

I actually think the jackals look really cool because of their more monochrome color scheme (black and white fur) and striking yellow eyes. There’s something about the consistency with the Jackal Squad’s overall design that I just like. And yes, Infinite’s design is absolutely peak within the Sonic franchise.

IDW is indeed completely canon to the games and thats not just Ian saying so, (like some people who hate him and/or the book would have you believe) Chris Hernandez another member hired to mange the lore would go on to back Ian's claims in seventh episode of the seventh season of Sonic Official. Its why not only did Tangle get a mention in Frontiers but she, Whisper and Surge are now playable in the mobile spin off games.

Blaze and Big are just different breeds of cat. Big is specifically based on a Maine Coon Cat, which is the largest cat breed, while Blaze is the size of your typical anthropomorphic cartoon cat. I think characters being in the same species group but having drastically different appearances based on their breed is a cool concept. They should do it more if they decide to bring in another cat character or a dog. I think I read somewhere that Big was also inspired by Totoro from Studio Ghibli. I could definitely see it, as he does have a gentle and soft look to him like Totoro.

My personal head canon is that Big is a tiger. Tigers are the largest cat species so the fact that he's 6 feet tall and has stripes has always been enough to justify that to me. Blaze is like, a domestic cat, which is why she's small and lanky (and she IS smol, she looks the same height as Sonic but remember how high her heels are, she's barely taller than Amy if that.) The thing about Sonic cats that pisses me off is the cat avatar option from forces has that :3 mouth, while the named cat characters Blaze and Big have regular mouths like everyone else, you have NO IDEA how much that pisses me off!

For the cats, I’d argue they’re different in-universe breed of cats.

I feel like robots count. Lots of robots have displayed some type of sentience or autonomy to where I feel it's justified. Plus they are super cool and provide some great moments.

On the topic of Lanolin as a character. Does she ever have to shear her wool? Like, I know she tends to bunch up the wool near her eyes into a four-set bun. But for the rest of her body, it must need shearing (which I imagine would be similar to running a razor across body hair on the skin for humans.) Which leaves me with another question... Do sheep mobians sell their wool to make cotton-based clothing, or... do feral sheep exist in Sonic's Universe too?

I think Sonic versions have different types of hedgehogs changed.Classic Sonic is more likely resemble to European hedgehog while Modern Sonic is more like Long Eared Hedgehog because of his ears are longer than Classic's.

Big and Blaze aren't the same species I don't think. They're just called the same thing and have a few coincidental similarities. They ARE from different dimensions after all & so far all other Sol Dimension species have been exclusive. (Vikings are considered separately from bears.) That is, except Eggman Nega, but he might be Eggman from the future and just altogether doesn't make much sense.

For why big in blaze could be both cats but not look the same I believe it's more of a taxonomy of each one is a different breed of cat like my best guess is that big the cat is a Mainecune cat a really huge cat that you can still technically have as a pet where blaze is more likely a persion cat because of the Red Dot on her head reminding me of Pursian from Pokemon I have no real other evidence the base these claims off of but that's my head Cannon as of right now
