Took a little while for this one to come out so I hired an editor to take care of my slack haha! I hope you guys enjoy Pitch Black Sensei's work and editing style! I sure think it's great! I also hope you enjoy the video as it is a bit of a logner one, but a very fun one as well if you ask me! Also let me know which starter generation theme you think is the coolest. If I have to choose... For me... It would obviously be Generation 4 ;)
It was confirmed that gen 1 starters are based on what children like to have as pets in Japan, a frog, a lizard and a turtle. They made them that way to easily connect with children to make them buy the game.
@@Jdudec367 yeah, same to me (specially with that name 'saur'), but the creators of the game themselves told about that in an interview, and if you look at the running animation of Venusaur (you can check it in the Let's Go games), it hops like a giant toad 🐸
@@diegoduartevalenzuela8063 hm....I still think it's more like a Dinosaur but it could be based on multiple animals at once. Venusaur does have bumps like a toad actually.
We could say Gen3 represents ecosystems and biomes. Swampert being the wetlands adapted life, Sceptile being the forests and woodlands, and Blaziken being the plains and mountainous areas.
The regions also have a theme on their own that seems to be based on things you learn in school/highschool: Kanto - Genetics (mutations) With kanto having the most amount of poison types (toxic waste being one things associated to mutations), pokemon highly tied to the concept of alterations in the DNA like eevee, mew, mewtwo, ditto. And many pokemon with more than one part of their body like dodrio. exeggutor, dugtrio, etc. Johto - History - With the region having a huge emphasis on the ancient buildings that are highly tied to the most important events from Hoenn. Like the bellsprout tower, alpha ruins and many more. Hoenn - Ecology - With this being the region with the most diverse amount of environments. Sinnoh - Religion. Explaining the pokemon god and its influence in the creation of the entire pokemon universe. Unova - Ethics. It´s pretty clear why if you know Team Plasma. Kalos - Art. The region is full of artists and things related to beauty. Alola - Natural selection. With alola being the region that introduced the concept of regional variants. Galar - Sports. It´s clear why If you´ve seen how the gym challenge and the gyms themselves are portrayed in Galar.
I think with Kalos has to do with the consequences of RPGs. After 3000 years there were constant war, disaster and death. And it's basically the hero job to end that war. There's a sanction land for safety where Mewtwo resides. And as for the Pokemon. They're basically your supplies and allies for the war. Aegislash, Hawlucha, Klefki. You get items to evolve and Mega. And as for Team Flare. Just like what the Dark Knight said. Some people want to watch the world burn. And there's beauty in that.
@@HybridHero and as for gen 7 i could see the starters grow up from basicly kids with dreams to teens set on their new goal in life exept dartrix becuse edgy teen that focuses on their hair more and finally the fully evolved stages are them reaching their goals in life as adults
For me, I believe the closest theme for the gen 7 starters are the brains, brawn, and beauty concept. Decidueye being brains, Incineroar being brawn, and Primarina being beauty. Makes sense, wouldn't ya think?
@@thedragonwarrior5861 cool! Also, I feel like if Decidueye's and Incineroar's second type changed, the brains-brawn-beauty concept would've made a lot more sense and be the actual theme of the Alolan starters' final evolutions. Primarina is part fairy and it makes sense with the beauty concept cause of the amount of "girly" pokemon usually being fairy type. On the other hand, Decidueye being part psychic would've made more sense with the brains concept since the psychic type surrounds the idea of the brain/mind. And if Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar weren't fire-fighting, Incineroar would've made a great fire-fighting final evolution. It's a wrestler tiger and since pokemon are now becoming a lot more human-like, fighting just makes sense on Incineroar.
Oh MY GOD! I feel really dumb or a genius here! Why isn’t gen 7 linked in every way possible even with story line too.... HAWAII!!! Soo any one see it yet?!! And the fire type is the only odd thing but not really because hawaii has a huge cat problem in more ways then one. Feral cats and, the mystery of the big cat many have seen but no one can find or record evidence of it. Since 1988 i believe. Alola everyone!😄
Generation 6 had a big focus on character customization so the starters being based on rpg classes might be seen as even more character customization as you can choose what play style is best for you.
I always thought the Gen 6 starters and the RPG classes represented balance, with each class being good against one and bad against another, like a triangle. You can see this in their secondary types as dark, psychic, and fighting form a triangle. I think this also fits the theme of X and Y's life and death being in balance too
That would be fitting. In RPGs balancing classes is a really big deal. It does fit the region. I usually like water types. However I picked Delphox as my starter, because mage is my favorite class of the three. It is fire/psychic type. Psychic is the type that used to be overpowered in gen 1. However that got fixed in gen 2 and onward. So Delphox is balanced out by the other two starters. One of the big innovations of gen 6 is the fairy type. It balances the types even further.
I think the Gen 7 trio could be based on constellations. Decidueye is Noctua, Incineroar is Byakko, and my favorite Primarina is Aquarius. When you think of the constellations idea this would kinda fit into generation 7’s role as games mainly the legendaries,Star like aspects, and alternate dimension things going on.
If Pokemon did an India region, i would love to see the starters represent hindu lore like the different levels of reincarnation like beast, ghost and demon or the three poison of mankind and overcoming them.
Primarina's my favorite of all Starter Pokémon. I love her so much. She's just so beautiful, kind and caring, and I've always liked seals and mermaids too ^^
Same for me! I love reading and writing stories that involve fantasy. Mermaids, fairies, dragons, all that stuff. So the fact that Primarina is a mermaid-seal hybrid AND a fairy type just makes it my favorite pokemon since I like things that involve fantasy and I also really like seals! So basically, same reason as you with the added addition of liking fantasy stuff.
@@gkoug876 If you wanna use Primarina and Greninja at the same time, pretty sure you have to get a demo of the SM games, transfer Greninja to the demo, then transfer it to the real games. That's how you get Greninja. Then to get Primarina, just choose Popplio as a starter! Also, your Greninja will now be able to have the battle bond ability so it would be able to turn into Ash-Greninja.
I always tied the gen 6 starters being the holy trinity of RPG classes with Gen 6 being an attempt at rebooting or revamping the series. Back to the basics if you will
For gen 6, the theme of the game is JRPGs with a vilain who wants to end all life around a scandinavian themed legendary pokemon, xernias specificly representing the ''trees of life'' that are pretty common in JRPGs. So your starter being rpg classes makes sense that way.
I thought the gen 2 starters were the food chain. Bayleef and meganium are plant names, cyndaquil are based of herbivorous shrews and totadile is the predator
Generation 2 for me always was about Tradition, which is why the three starters are monotype. At their base, its just a dinosaur, shrew, and crocodillian. And they all have deep ties with history. Alligators have significant religious ties in many ancient civilization. Japan is literally on the Ring of Fire, which is just all volcanoes. And they have found a heck ton of Sauropod fossils throughout the entire region of Japan and southeast asia. There was even a fossil that they thought was a dinosaur, but it turned out to be a plant which might have had influence it its typing. All three are ancient things and the region is the most Traditional in the entire franchise. Gen 3 is entirely based on the ecosystem. All three had places in the region where they would "be native" if the games allowed starters to be wild pokemon. Very unique starters. Which is why GF favors gen 3 along with Gen 1. Gen 6 starters are rather fancy tho no? Chesnaught is all dressed up, more so than any other grass starter before it. It just has a lot going on. Delphox is the only starter wearing a dress. And Greninja is sleek and slim just like models. France is literally the fashion capital of the world. And hands down gen 7 is based on circus performers as well as serving as part 2 to the kalos/alola RPG roles. Theyre getting smarter with their pokemon origins.
Some may've commented this before, but Bulbasaur was based on a frog. In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs had frog DNA, which connects to the genetics theme and the localized 'saur' addition.
I just wish that ALL the starters were excellent in competitive battle. Up there with legendaries and pseudo legendaries. Without needing dynamaxing or mega evolutions.
To go along with the genetic mutation theme the gen 1 starters could be genetically mutated versions of normal reptiles Venasaur- dinosaur with plants growing on it Charizard- a lizard with wings Blastoise- a turtle with cannons
I thought Venusaur was a Tree/Frog hybrid possibly a reference to genetic hybridization. Blastoise represents biological fusion with objects particularly cannons. Lastly Charizard is a dragon which could along with Venusaur reference Jurassic Park (Frogs were used to create dinosaurs in that) an attempt to resurrect something awesome from the past through genetic experimentation.
I always thought that the Gen 7 starters were based on conservation, as Decidueye is based on the stilt owl (extinct), Incineroar is based on a tiger (endangered), and Primarina is based on the monk seal (endangered).
I think when you said that the third stage evolutions of gen 3 were made up of multiple different animals, it immediately sparked the idea of chimeras.
It's cool how they select certain animals from different parts of the world, and combine them with themes from different cultures. It definitely explains why there is a ninja frog in a region based off France.
I honestly liked that whole Alola completed Kalos RPG starters theme, I dunno, the Alolan trio have always seemed to hold the natural advantage against Kalos starters
I think the theme for gen 8 is deceivers Decidueye represents a hunter that utilizes deception to lure in prey and trap them. Incineroar represents a wrestling heel that deceives its audience through acting and stunt work. Primarina represents a siren that deceives sailors into wrecking their ships by luring them in with singing.
the correlastion between the xy starters and the games could be...if there based off "europeon rpg classes" then with france being a europe country and france being what kalos is based off that would make sense
I think further Gen 8 starters are based off of careers. Gens 1-7 are like subjects you learn in school. 1: Genetics 2: History 3: Biology 4: Religions 5: Economics 6: Liberal Arts (Beauty) 7: Alchemy (Chemistry) But then once school is over you SWITCH into real life
The Alolan starters' pre-evolution may have an alchemy symbol motif. Which Rowlet is based on Salt, Litten is based on Sulphur and Popplio is based on Mercury.
This is admittedly stretch but I think the gen 6 starters actually do relate back to the fashion theme of Kalos, at least in their design. The Kalos starters have design elements that look like clothes. Chesnaught has armor, Delphox has a robe, and Greninja has both a scarf and a traditional ninja getup. The listed clothing items are common with the fantasy classes the each starter represents and fit the fashion theme. Again a bit of stretch but I think I made a cool connection
I think some of these are wrong. I feel like these are the correct inspirations for all Pokémon Bulbasuar- Was confirmed to be a frog Charmander- Lizard Squirtle- Turtle Chikorita- not sure at first but the later versions def remind me of a dinosaur like a brachiosaurus Cyndaquil- This one is a badger Totodile- Aligator Treeko- Another lizard Torchic- Chicken Mudkip- A frog, I think Bulbasaur is supposed to be more of a toad while he is just a literal frog Turtwig- Turtle but prolly more of a tortoise Chimchar- Monkey but more specifically a chimp I think Piplup- Penguin Snivy- Snake Tepig- Pig Oshawott- is based off an otter but it’s final evolution Samurott (prolly spelled that wrong) is based off a sea lion so its one of the only starters that changes species when it grows up. Froakie- is another frog Chespin- either a chipmunk or a hedgehog and his final evolution is based off an armadillo Fennekin- Fox Rowlette- Owl Poplio- Sea lion Litten- some sort of cat most likely a tiger tho due to its coloration and stripes Grookey- Monkey but more specifically a gorilla Scorbunny- A bunny/rabbit Sobble- another lizard
With Gen 6, I think the relation to the theme of the game is more so "RPG Protagonists" rather than classes. The Protagonists are always the ones keeping the big bad away, keeping DEATH at bay with their actions while keeping those they hold dear ALIVE. Could be wrong though.
1. The European RPG theme blends well with the Kalos culture since Kalos somewhat follows a medieval theme into it, especially when you play the game. And the European RPG classes mostly exist in a medieval setting, especially when you play D&D 2. The Circus theme somewhat also fits Alola because Alola has a very welcoming and wild atmosphere, similar to that of a circus. Even Hawaii, which the place Alola is based on, seems to be exhibiting that.
I only noticed the Kalos and Galar themes on my own. I usually like Water the best. However for these guns I picked the theme I like best. For Kalos, I picked Fennekin. For me, mage is easily the best class out of the three. Magicians are so cool. Since Kalos is the first European zone, the RPG starters fit well enough. Traditional RPGS are heavily inspired by European stories especially Lord of the Rings. The whole Zelda franchise shows that Nintendo is no stranger to European inspiration. For Galar, I picked Grookey. I am a huge fan of Britain. There are two main things I like about it. One is that there is a lot of fantasy. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are two biggies. There is other modern fantasy stories plus a buttload of folklore. The second thing I like is the rock music, particularly the British Invasion. Heck my favorite band is the Beatles, and that was the main band at the time and place. Two other favorite bands are Queen and Pink Floyd, and those are also in the British Invasion. I picked Grooky, because the music theme is what I am most fond of. The gyms of Galar are obvious ripoff of soccer stadiums. It is pretty freaking hard to miss. I don't even like sports, and I still recognize it. Since I am more of a music person, I guess I can pretend that this is like a rock concert taking place in a stadium. Sometimes they do this to accommodate larger audiences. It is like the time the Beatles played at Shea Stadium and Queen played at Wembly Stadium. The other gens have very shakey themes. So I doubt it. I did hear an interesting comment about the Kanto starters. Kanto was when Pokemon was bearly starting. So the developers wanted to go for something basic and grounded. So all starters are based on small pets kept in glass tanks. It is fitting for the main concept of a monster fitting in the pocket. Bulbasar is a frog. Character is a lizard. Squirtle is a turtle. All have species small enough to be in tanks. Even Pikachu keeps up with this trend. A mouse is very different from the other animals because it is a mammal. Yet people still keep pet mice in tanks. So it still fits. Mammals tend to be more appealing, especially cats and dogs. So that may be partly why Pikachu became the main franchise mascot.
i think gen 7 starter are based on fantasy storys like: the grass starter is robin hoot The water starter is an princess and the fire starter is the beast (like in the beathy and the beats) or the villain
I believe that The Sun and Moon Starters do in fact share the circus and fair theme overall. Incineroar: Tigers are circus animals who jump through hoops of fire. Inceneroar is a tiger literally wearing a hoop (belt) of fire. The classic old circus strong men would often wear wrestling attire and perform wrestiling acts but aren't trained wrestlers. Incineroar draws inspiration from heel wrestlers, who are the known to be the bad guys in modern wrestling entertainment. Primarina: Sealions are circus sanimals who would perform on pedestals and balance balls on their snouts. The classic old circus owners would often claim to have found freaks of nature or unique specimens and put them on show, among these were mermaids. Primerina resembles a cross between a sealion and a mermaid. Dicidueye: I've seen no real evidence of owls in circuses but other birds are used as circus performers. Although trick shot archers are often included in circus acts, I believe that Dicidueye's archer elements more draw from archery contests at renaissance fairs. It also has the dapper appearance of a ringleader and if used on it's own, the vines used as it's hood ties and bow strings could also be seen as whips, such as the ones used by ringleaders.
i think gen 1 starter theme is a some sort of fantasy vs sci-fi war, charizard represents the evil dragon attacking the land, venusaur represents the land being attacked while blastoise represents the giant mech fighting for the land.
I think you could make a solid argument for gen 1 starters being based on amphibians/lizards you can find in your backyard in Japan. If Bulbasaur line is a toed/frog, Charmander is a salamander/small lizard and Squirtle is a turtle, it sort of works
The main villain team of galar, are not based on music, but rather hooligans (and fans in general), a type of people who over ecstatically cheers for their favorite player, team and artist.
i really gotta say, gen 7 is my favourtites what is think that gen 7 starter are also like gen 8 , meaning for entertainment. inceroar (as you said) is the lion who is trained to jump over the ring of fire, wheras primarina is the sealion which are trained to balance beach balls on their nose in dolphines shows. whereas duecidye is completely off topic. but my prediction is that ,it is related to pigion race, ( do you remember ,in the starting of the series sun and moon, rowlett always lacked behind the pikipek flock.) THEREFOR THIS IDEAS IS WHAT HYBRID EXPLAINS.
What about gen 7 being Air, land, sea. Like the hoenn legendaries. Decidueye being air like rayquaza (green), incineroar being land like groudon (red), and primarina being sea like kyogre (blue)
Kind of thought gen 6 was an attempt at getting back to Pokemon's rpg inspired roots. Always thought there might be more too what with a starter pokemon being a frog in a region inspired by a country where frog legs are a delicacy.
The only thing I could say is that typhlosion sticks out because it's based on a wolverine/badger while the other two are more based on ancient animals.
I know it always looked off to me & while I always considered Typhlosion as 1 of the flaws of Johto, I now see that it wasn't even originally supposed to be from Johto. Cyndaquil was actually a random Hisuian Pokemon the entire time further establishing the Sinnoh & Johto connections. I think Johto was probably the least planned Pokemon region thanks to the Space World Demo & other pre-release information. Many of the trends that make up Pokemon as we know it today probably weren't decided on until at least Hoenn such as the Pikaclones, Fire Zodiac & Water Weapons.
Could the gen 7 starters represent different types of competitions one person can participate in many areas. Incineroar represents physical competition that people must fight each other to prove who is on top. Decidueye represents sport competitions that require practice and smart thinking to succeed for the best. Like how in archery you must precisely aim but in outside areas, you must factor in wind direction when shooting. And Primarina represents beauty and singing competitions, where one must prove who is better by alluring people with their beauty and voice to side with them over others.
I love this! I think for the part where you talk about the X and Y starters and how you can't figure out how they correspond to the beauty and aesthetics of the world of Kalos...I think that's it. The RPG classes for the starters are based on classes from DND. DND is seen as more nerdy and introverted and enjoying the make believe, but Kalos being beautiful and pretty and ever changing and unique. So when you mix the two, you kinda mix the nerd with the beauty. And I think that's the bond between the Kalos starters and their Region.
Technically they only started the themes in gen 6 Gen 6: The three classes The juggernaut The mage The rogue Gen 7: The Circus The ring leader A tiger jumping through rings of fire A juggling sea lion Gen 8: Entertainment Football Music Acting
I always thought the alolan starters were based on aumakua from Hawaiian folklore. Aumakua from my understanding are spiritual guides or deitys that protect and guide individuals or their families. If not all three starters are based on that, then at least decidueye is, being grass-ghost and based on an owl, who is a common aumakua.
That’s what I initially thought when the first forms I’d the starters came out. I thought they were going to be circus based with popplio being the seals that perform in circuses, litten being the tiger, and rowlett being a falcon/owl since falconees are often in circuses. That was before I saw the final evos though. Another theory that I have is that it’s based off of old circus performers that have since passed and took the bodies of the circus animals ghost, dark, and fairy are all types that have some sort of magical power. That’s a stretch but could be.
Gen 7 is based off Alchemy (salt, iron, and mercury being based off of mind, body, and spirit) Salt is represented by an archer. (Mind) Litten has the symbol for iron on its forehead. (Body) And Popplio characterizes the wavy alchemical shape for mercury. (Spirit)
Gen. One's theme is "creatures you could catch in the wild as kids." Satoshi has literally said this on record. The first forms are a turtle, salamander, and frog. By that logic, only one is an actual reptile, though Charmander's line is based more on the mythical salamander than the real amphibious one. Bulbasaur is based on a frog, as "saur" is only present in his English name. Hence why he hops in Let's Go. Gen. Two's sounds like a stretch, but I can't think of a theme either. Honestly I have my doubts there even is one. I don't think Three deliberately has one either, but I guess you could say "subverting expectations." This time we had a physical fire type, and speedy grass type, and those were both newer concepts. That said, Swampert being a bulky water type isn't exactly groundbreaking. Really feel like Four is a weak attempt, because there are a shitload of Pokémon based on myths, but...fine. Five is confirmed, I just don't know if I agree with "royalty." I'd say maybe just "empires" or "ancient armies." The king being at the top, and Emboar is essentially just a Chinese warlord, who weren't actual royalty by blood but ruled by sheer might. And the samurai were absolutely not royal and didn't enjoy much better treatment than you'd think, aside from an education. Gen. Six is correct, although I'll point out that Chesnaught is specifically a paladin. As for the relation, I thought the joke was that Pokémon wasn't a traditional RPG, so they used traditional RPG classes for once. Gen. Seven is an extension of the RPG class. Archer, Berserker, Cleric. Though I suppose Bard works as well. Decidueye's design is entirely based on the hooded cloak of a ranger, there's no ringmaster there. Honestly I don't think the starter themes ever deliberately tie into the themes of the game. Gen. Eight is simply entertainment. Sports, Music, and Acting. Three most common and basic forms of entertainment.
Contrary to popular belief and despite ‘saur’ being in the name, Bulbasaurs line takes inspiration from frogs and synapsids. Neither of which are dinosaurs.
I knew the the Themes for the Gen 4, Gen 6, Gen 7 and Gen 8 but I didn’t know the Themes of Gen 1 Gen 2 Gen 3 and Gen 5 and I think the Gen 7 starter are based of Entertainers Incinaroar an Wrestler, Diciueye an Archer and Primarina an Opra Singer.
I feel like the gen 7 (aloha) starters are the other RPG character roles like Primarina (support /healer / bard) Decidueye (ranger/hunter) Incineroar (Fighter/warrior/ Barbarian/ Berzerker)
Speaking against the circus thing is the fact, that the archer does not like to be watched. Before, no problem but the last stage is all about attacking from the shadows and stuff like that
For the Gen 6 starters. Kalos is a mythical version of France. Most classic RPG stories where the Tank-Mage-Rogue trio is used are set in some mythical European country. That's the best correlation I can give.
