Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I was laughing at how horrible it was, actually. I cannot believe she also wrote Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which I absolutely loved. I think she's a one-off author for me as I DNF'd that awful Daisy Jones book too. lol.

Im so glad I finally found a chanel that will call out the mysogyny in books and actually dnf them. Im polish so I knew about all the shitty things in witcher years ago and its been painfull to see, once witcher got popular worldwide, all my fave youtubers say it's such a great fantasy series without even a mention of the mysogyny. So, thank you!

I get some many people commenting that “it’s fiction” as if that doesn’t mean the author chose every word 🙄 They’re just not good enough to develop a dark world without every female character being SAed
@julesnar1175
@julesnar1175 Год назад
@@BookswithEmilyFox Yeah, not to mention how many of them simply can't write a good female character at all. They exist to either be a sexy lamp that loves the male mc, or for something terrible to happen to her so the male mc can have motivation - sometimes both. People say "its fiction" as if its suddenly incapable of being criticised.
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox Год назад
I think that's the most frustrating part. You can enjoy a book even if it has sexism/is sexist but arguing that it's not when it objectively is... euh.

Also a Pole here. I read the Witcher, though the last two books were a chore that I put off for two years, but to me the most annoying thing about the series is how dull it is. Not much happens, the characters aren't really great. The only two I found really interesting, Cahir and Emhyr, were underdeveloped. I get that Sapkowski wanted the big reveal for Emhyr at the end, but he still could've given us something. The way Emhyr just gave up when he got what he wanted felt bizzare, especially when almost everyone died just for Geralt to "win" because of Emhyr's boredom? conscience? temporary instanity? Also the random changes of narration style irritated me more than they should've. It's puzzling to me why Witcher's fans praise Sapkowski for his sex scenes, when they are barely there, especially in the novels. Mainly Yen whimpering for a bit. 80s halequins had better sex scenes. And don't get me started on Ciri falling in love with her rapist. But the defense of sexism is always that the sorceresses are the ones in power, ignoring the fact that they barely accomplish anything by themselves except for sending one of their own to be Geralt's stand in for Yennefer to try and manipulate him with sex. Or that sexism is pretty much going to be a thing in every real or made up world ever because. And why the hell does no one mention the very open ending? Grzędowicz is regularly criticised for how he wrote Pan Lodowego Ogrodu's ending but to me it's decently closed, especially compared to the Witcher. Also, that whole vampire "overindulgence" is just alcoholism with blood - how exactly is it genious writing? But try to say otherwise and you'll hear more often than not that you're just too young or dumb to understand what Sapkowski's writing about. Sorry for the rant, I just really hate the fact that I wasted time on 7 books that barely had any plot, where "good" guys "win" because the baddie has a change of heart.
@MariannaD934
@MariannaD934 Год назад
Also, there are some very brutal scenes in 'The Shining'. It was disgusting to me.

Gurl, let's normalize DNFing books! If you're 1/2 through and it's not going well there's a strong chance it's not going to get any better. There are a finite number of books we can read in a lifetime, why spend our precious time reading books we're not interested in?
@BookswithEmilyFox

Exactly! That's why I like to do these end of the year "DNFs" to show it's a good thing!
@bl12

Yes exactly! I’ve really started to dnf books in the last 2 months due to this outlook. There has not been a single book that I was happy I finished when I got the urge to dnf it. I use to force myself to finish books. Now if I’m 50-60% and it’s still not peaking my interest, I stop reading and find another book.

@riankoch9126
@riankoch9126 Год назад
What subgenre?
@nikhilkaimal1993
@nikhilkaimal1993 Год назад
@@riankoch9126 The LitRPG subgenre. Basically I looked into it when I ran out of magical school books, and found out about this subgenre with game-like worlds and quantified progress. Since I had Kindle Unlimited at the time, I tried and dropped a lot of those books. The main issue was that most of them were very poorly written, using the base templates and story structures of the subgenre to cover for bad writing. I dropped 80% of those that I tried, and dropped the genre entirely after that year, so 2020 has a random spike of that subgenre in my read books that vanishes in 2021 and 2022.

I'm pretty good at DNFing books where the writing style isn't for me. I usually check out of those by the 10% mark. I have a harder time giving up on books I'm bored with because there are usually some elements I like, but they always end up in the 2-3 star range. My desire to have a fully-formed opinion still outweighs my desire to give up on the book. Maybe I can tip the scales the other way in 2023.

Wanted to chime on about Russian classics: for whatever reason, the only Russian classics that are well-known internationally are super long, super dense ones (with the exception of Nabokov, who isn't really considered a Russian author). There's much better stuff out there, but I'm not sure how much of it is available in translation, but some Russian classic authors to consider if you ever have the desire to are Chekhov (pretty funny short stories, pretty dramatic plays), Nekrasov, Turgenev, Griboedov (comedy plays), Gogol, Bunin, Taffy, Sholokhov (pretty brutal stuff), Bulgakov (The Notes of a Young Doctor is pretty funny and sad at the same time, and most of his novels are pretty out there but very entertaining and smart). So, basically just wanted to say that not all Russian classics are boring doorstoppers 😄

I Dnf’d 4 books this year: - Dowry of Blood: the writing was beautiful but I realized that I don’t care for vampires in books anymore, I only like them on screen 🤷🏽‍♀️ - Magic steeped in poison: I wanted to love it so much but the pacing was all over the place and the insta love made me gag🫠 - Ice Palace: there was a weird scene with the MC‘s getting undressed, it made me really uncomfortable. You‘ll know what I mean when you know how old they are. - To be taught if fortunate (🤣) : I picked it up because of your recommendation but I was super bored. Now I‘m reading the Monk and Robot #1 and really like it! Maybe you could make a video with a Becky Chambers guide one day, but I guess she first has to write more books😅

My "toxic" reading trait is that I never DNF my books. No matter how boring a book is, no matter how much I dislike it, I continue reading it because I want to form an objective opinion about the book as a whole. In case I paid for it, then there's no chance that I'm going to DNF it, I will just give it away if I didn't like it at all once I finish it. If I do not enjoy a book that much, although I continue reading it, I read it slowly and I focus on books which I enjoy. However, I want to remind to every single reader that it's totally fine to DNF books. You shouldn't feel guilty about it, life is too short to waste your time on things that don't bring joy to you. This video was very important and I enjoyed watching you explaining the reasons why you didn't finish these books.

I DNF because if I don't I just get into a reading slump. If I force myself to finish a book I am just not feeling for whatever reason reading becomes an absolute slog. I generally will dnf something that if I haven't picked it up in two or more days and find myself doing other things then to read. Sometimes they go into my version of a "pile of shame" if it's something I attempted to read during a reading slump or I feel like it has potential but for whatever reason it's just not vibing with me right now. The book I am most sad I DNF'd out of the 20 or so books I put down was Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke. I put down so many books this year but my spread sheet only lists 9. A lot of books I'll get from my library and if I don't like it after 20 pages I return it but don't count it as a dnf. I've been having a rough year so I haven't been able to get into books (my reading goal was 65 books, and I definitely will not make it) so a lot of books I just lost interest in. The book that I think most deserved to be dnfed was The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett because there was rape and incest and according to reviews I found after I had quit rape happened more times in the book. I don't want to waste my time on a book that relies on rape as a tool to show how terrible someone is.

My most "controversial" DNFs were: Bunny - WTF was this book? The writing was such a slog too. What Moves the Dead - I keep trying T. Kingfisher, and I just don't like her retelling style. Kaiju Preservation Society - this desperately needed a show don't tell approach. Fledgling - the old vampire in a child's body trope needs to stop. It is so problematic.

I read Where the Red Fern Grows when I was like... 8? I honestly don't remember the sexism (which probably speaks to the way so much media I consumed as a kid was super sexist but anyway...) but I do remember sobbing like a baby and my mom coming in to find me just crying my eyes out and wondering wtf was wrong with me 😂
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox Год назад
Rereading books you read as a kid can be shocking with the sexism! It wasn't "that bad' but it just goes to show how we absorb it as if it's normal. I'm hoping it will be impactful even for an adult when I give it a second chance!

I didn't finish Bunny, I get what this book is doing and I know the plot twist (looked it up after DNFing), but it's just the execution that doesn't vibe with me at all. I suppose for the plot to work the narrator supposed to be pretentious misogynist, but everything has a reasonable extent and for me this book was way beyond it)) DNF Possession by Byatt as well, and I don't recall the last time a book has made me so disappointed. The vibes were there, but the effing plot was sooo not working for me, I cannot imagine real scientists caring for the thing Byatt made them to investigate) Also, DNF for now but will most likely return later: Queen Margot by Dumas, lovely story but I've lost the rhythm somewhere in the middle, will finish it later when an urge for historical romance returns) On the whole I definitely recommend DNFing))

Agree don’t spend time reading books you don’t enjoy, I’m not great at doing this either. I 100% understand why you DNF’d a lot of these, my only disagreement is My Heart is a Chainsaw this was 5* for me and one of my best books of the year. But Stephen Graham Jones has a very particular way of writing that’s not for everyone.

I’m not trying to change your mind BUT The Lost Apothecary has nothing to do with witches or witchcraft. The past timeline is about a woman who sold poisons to women who were in abusive relationships so they could murder their husbands 🤷🏼‍♀️

3 hours? Wow that is short! Lol. Yeah, if an audiobook is less than 8-9 hours, I feel guilty for wasting a credit on it. I recent DNFd The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by NK Jemison. I gave it 3 hours. It was so boring and was nothing but the main character complaining about how much she hates everyone. I hated it.

While it was hard to give up on this book, it also taught me that I dislike a trope. Characters who heal their trauma by doing a job that would traumatize others. BTW, you can't work drunk at McDonald's yet, we are led to believe that ppl who are fighting terrorists/serial killers ect. can dismantle a bomb after drinking half a bottle of tequila? I rest my case!

@@BookswithEmilyFox I read The Last Wish when the TV show was announced. I hated it enough that it took me two years to give it another chance. When I liked the show I tried again. The second book is just as bad. I would have encouraged you to start with the Blood of Elves, because there was a small chance you would have liked it. After the first two the misogyny and SA get toned waaaay down, it's still there and probably would have been too much but there was a chance. PS I'm told most people aren't fans because of the books, apparently the video games are 100 times better.
