People we meet on vacation has two titles because the uk publishers thought 'You and me on vacation' is a more marketable title. It definitely suits the story better imo. Beach Read is also kind of a clickbait title. There's barely any beach in the story. Can't wait for your Emily Henry book reviews! Her books are SO close to my heart. Beach Read is definitely my favorite. Hope you like them

I hated BR becouse of undelivered promise from its title, so prob the UK publiser did good job with this book
@happyjellycatsquid

I think the UK publishers made the right call because clearly Emily Henry THOUGHT the the people Poppy met on vacation had a meaningful impact on the story, but they absolutely did not and she didn’t even meet the guy on vacation either. You and me on vacation is less catchy, but a million times more accurate to what the book is

Bit of nerd stuff from a french student: In the 18th century, there started to be actually quite a lot of women writers in France! Half of them really liked to write fairy tales, and the ladies met up in their salons and told each other stories :) (obviously only upper class and aristocratic women were able to write stories and get famous with it) And a lot of the fairytales we know got developped there, kind of as a group effort, since fairy tales are always retold. So there are French versions of tales the Grimms wrote down as well. These women were called „conteuses“ (fairy tellers). Also: a male author published lots of these and was remembered more cuz hes a man (Perrault)

I felt this, English books in Czech Republic are expensive. English books in Portugal are even more expensive. (The two countries I typically live in) So you can bet that when I'm going to visit Scotland this October I'm taking a whole empty baggage bag with me to bring my book haul. Give me all those 7-9£ book deals 🤩 Edit: What? 3£ for a book?! Maybe I should take two bags 😲

Most classic fairytales were published by men, but they were handed down and told by women from whom the men gathered them. Clever Maids: The Secret History of the Grimm Fairy Tales is a great place to start about who those stories originally came from and their backgrounds, which were not the peasants as the Grimms said there were.
@leono7380
@leono7380 2 года назад
It is generally known that the Brothers Grimm collected the fairy tales and did not write them themselves.
2 года назад
@@leono7380 Yeah, but they said that they were folk tales when in reality they got most of the stories from a French woman who was very educated and told them stories that weren't based in folklore but in French literature. And that's what the op meant

Emily Henry also has some YA contemporary works. I read A Million Junes by her, which is a contemporary romance with magical realism. I really enjoyed it and since it came out before Beach Read, I could really see the themes that she enjoys exploring!

Hey Leonie! I’ve been watching your channel for a while and never commented until now, but I finally got around to doing it today because I recently graduated from uni so I’m enjoying that summer break that you’ll also be having soon! I just wanted to say that I love your channel so much - it’s so fun to watch and you have the uncanny ability to make any book you talk about sound good. Because of you, I’ve rekindled my love for reading (especially fantasy!) and I pick up a lot of your recommendations. You also seem like such a sweet and friendly person, so although I’m a complete Internet stranger, I hope it doesn’t come off as too invasive when I say I would love to be friends! 😊

Hi Leonie, two bookshop tips if you are ever in London again, near Brick Lane. There are these two little independent bookstores that are just amazing. The first one is Brick Lane Booshop, and the other (and my favorite) is Libreria Bookshop. The last one also stamps your books with their pretty logo (unless you don't want that). Go check them out if you're ever in the area again :)

Thinking that perhaps I should re - read and see if my thoughts have changed the second time round. Also, I loved the video! Lots of books that have piqued my interest. I also recently acquired a copy of Iron Widow (thanks to your videos) which I’m very excited to read!

My question is: has Beach Read not been translated into Dutch? Or do you prefer to read in English? I've read People We Meet on Vacation, and I did not understand the hype -- I thought it was too long for what it was, and the plot line was redundant. But I've heard Beach Read is much better, so I still plan to read it. Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint!
@just_ella17
@just_ella17 2 года назад
I can't speak for Leonie, but as a non native English speaker who still reads majority of her books in English I just prefer to read the original. Things get lost in translation so easily and every time I read a book that's been translated and don't end up liking it, I wonder whether that's because I didn't like the actual book, or just didn't like the translation. Reading the original just gives you the best expierence imo and you get to read the words exactly as the author intended it. That's why I would always prefer the original language over a translation when possible
@neverxever66
@neverxever66 2 года назад
Completely agree, also a non-native English speaker here - I prefer to read books in English simply because I enjoy the language and because the majority of the books I'm interested in are originally written/published in English so it just makes the most sense to read the original (and I know plenty of people who do the same). There is also the fact that it often takes a long time for translations to come out, even of very popular books and it can sometimes really distort the reading experience, depending on how good the translation is. On a different note, I had the same experience with Emily Henry - I was really disappointed with People We Meet on Vacation, it just did not work for me. I enjoyed the beginning, but the further I got into the story, the more annoyed I got with the plot and the characters BUT I ended up picking up Beach Read not long after to give her books another try and I really enjoyed that one! Overall it was a really fun, atmospheric time, and the added literary element (two author-main characters) made the characters really interesting and it just felt like the perfect summer read for book lovers (pun intended, sorry).
@happyjellycatsquid
@happyjellycatsquid 2 года назад
I also try to pick up as many books in their original language as possible, so when a book I want has been published in French I read in French and if it’s been published in English I try to get my hands on an English version. Can’t always do that because there’s a lot less choice of English books and sometimes I just have to snag a specific edition (like this absolutely beautiful hardcover I have of Frankenstein that’s in French cause I couldn’t resist it).

Oh god finally someone that agrees with me! People we meet on vacation was definitely not worth the hype it just wasn’t that good. I don’t think you’ll like beach read cause I had the same critiques about both books. In my opinion book lovers is the best out of all 3.

3:50 hi!! A person majoring in folklore studies (and specialicing on fairytales) here: happy to tell you that although most well known _collectors_ of fairytales were men, before people like Charles Perrault and the Grimm brothers showed up to the scene, fairytales were considered a ”female” past time. (Kind of) thanks to Perrault, women from the upper class, like de Villeneuve, started to write fairytales as a hobby! ”La Belle et La Bete” is the most well known of these fairytales written by aristocratic women from Europe and one of the only classic fairytales we know the actual author of. The story does fit into the ATU folktale type index’s ”425A: the Animal (Monster) as Bridegroom”, meaning this type of story is very well known in the area of folktales, which could explain why you might’ve thought ”Beauty and the Beast” is by The Grimm brothers: they have published their own version of the tale under the name ”The Summer And Winter Garden”! Hope you find this interesting, because (if you couldn’t tell lol) I sure do!! 💫

The reason you had trouble with the Emily Henry titles may be because the stock was going to The Works which is a large discount retailer in the UK.. They had all 3 at discounted prices when i went to my local one today, Also that massive Waterstones is often really poorly stocked. One of my favourite authors has a fan meetup there every year and they told her they don't stock her books. I am always going in there looking for popular titles they don't have

Just a cool tip here. I know that Leonie bought Emily Henry's books because of the romances they supposed to serve. But my book friends were all agree that if you dive in with that mindset, you would probably be disappointed. Instead, read them as a woman's fiction and you'll find absolute joy. A lot of my friends don't like People We Meet On Vacation and Beach Read, thinking them as romance book, but then absolutely LOVE Book Lovers after the reset. And now they decided to reread both books to kind of see again, if their reviews would upgrade, which they think they will

Not everyone in my life was supportive of that decision but now that a year has passed I am so much more in tune with myself, plus I have a better idea of which direction I want my life and career to take. :) It makes me happy to see people adress the importance of taking a break after years and years of studying and academia.

The reason why it’s called “You and Me on Vacation” instead of “People we meet on vacation” I’m pretty sure it’s because many fans have complained that the original title doesn’t make sense, because the book is more focused on them than on the people they meet. I think that is why it was changed but I’m not 100% sure!

Two super interesting reads 🤩 for fiction there is Breats and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami (which people either love or are underwhelmed but i found it amazing), and The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton 😍

lol i thought the original of the beauty and the beast was by Charles Perrault. I remember feeling excited for having read it because i believed it was the original. Thanks for correcting me !
