10:48 I would recommend hardware cloth on the lower 3' of the chicken run. Snakes can slither right through poultry fencing and get to the eggs. Also bury fencing at least 1' deep around the perimeter to keep burrowing predators out.
@TMM716
@TMM716 Год назад
Another tip for keeping them safe is laying down fencing or chicken wire under where you build the structure so that raccoons and fox can’t dig to get into the coop. Yesterday I found 3 holes dug around my coop, I was so thankful we laid that wire. I lost 9 girls to a red tailed hawk this fall. I’ve had chickens since I was 23 and in those 12 years, I’ve never had any taken by hawks. It was devastating. Great info guys!! Happy homesteading 😊

I thought something was wrong when I heard their egg song for the first time lol... and they all like to join in sometimes too . I'm in Michigan. I have 4 easter eggers and 6 barred rocks . They all wont walk in snow but I have a 10x10 tarp covered frame they wander in all day. Nice days they are out all day foraging.

Hey if you guys are getting meat chickens, I ordered mine from the chick hatchery. I believe they’re in Owosso but it was free shipping when I ordered. I got 25 meat birds for $60!

I found a guy in Eaton County that charges $3.50 per bird processed but I think I’m going to try to process them (depending on how close I get to them while they’re growing lol) Wish me luck 🥴😆

I don't have chickens, but have a question ❓. Is one rooster of any breed enough to impregnate all the hens so they lay eggs, or am I missing something??
@AcresOfAdventure
@AcresOfAdventure Год назад
Some hens may reject the rooster but yes, they usually say 1 rooster for like 9 hens is a good ratio
@StubbsMillingCo.
@StubbsMillingCo. Год назад
1 rooster for 10 hens, 5 is preferred but 10 makes sure he doesn’t get bored.
@phillipsfamilly5
@phillipsfamilly5 Год назад
A rooster is not needed to produce eggs. The more hens you have for 1 rooster, then he won’t be able to protect and keep them herded together. If the rooster mates with a hen, the hen will have fertilized eggs for apx 3 week from a 1 night stand.
@rebeccaplumlee9601
@rebeccaplumlee9601 Год назад
U do not need a rooster at all! Think of a woman, they cycle and produce an ovum (egg), every month. with no male involved. If u want fertile eggs 1 rooster can service many hens. Some ppl like q0 hens to 1 male, but u can double that. Breed of rooster? Again think of humans or dogs, any male can fertilize a female in a species.

That whole saving money thing, is that considering how much egg prices have gone up? I got into it for the health benefit and not so much for saving money but it seems like I'm starting to save money once I compare it to the 5 dozen eggs I used to get at Costco. They have gone up so much!
@dougadams9419
@dougadams9419 Год назад
8:30 they are the same, but Duck eggs are better than chicken eggs, but most people don't like the taste, they are larger and a more orange yolk than a chicken egg.
@dougadams9419
@dougadams9419 Год назад
7:17 NO. Fresh eggs can be stored in a carton on the Kitchen Counter for up to two weeks and do NOT wash them until you need to use them. Eggs have a this coating from the hen that protects it from bacteria and contamination. Eggs in U.K.stores are unwashed and not refrigerated. In the U.S. eggs are washed and treated so must be kept cool. Even fertile eggs can be kept for two weeks before incubation when you get enough. A hen will hide eggs until she can hatch them all at once. Yes, I raised chickens and ducks over 5 years ago, and just now starting again.

I walk my dog & keep him leashed “97lb American Bully” ya he’s kind of a beast but I walk him around my property line. He’s not a barker at all. I also urinate along the wood line in the back corner may sound crazy but I figured if predators are anything like deer they will absolutely run from human smell that’s why the have detergent & body wash that smell like fall dirt so anyway figured it wouldn’t hurt. Love your videos thanks for all the info & content y’all put out

They missed the concussion mortars from the 4th tho lol that was quite the blast 💥 😂those are the big explosions you hear from professional firework shows there’s nothing to see but sounds like a tank firing off lol this was before I got my chickens. I wouldn’t want to scare them to death. lol

Should I get a plastic coop to keep away mites? Do chickens require a wood environment?
@baddogcustoms7496
@baddogcustoms7496 Год назад
Get a bottle of permethrin 17% is the one I got. I was told this by a farmer who is 73 years old. Dilute 1 fluid oz to a gallon of water. spray the walls of your coop you can even spray your dog with it and it’s bedding. Do not, and I repeat, do not spray on cats. You can also spray a small mist underneath your chickens wings. If you’re comfortable with that and they’re not too small. My bruise had mites keyword head because I listened to this old man that knew what he was talking about that happened to be my uncle and now my birds are healthy. & loving life 😊

I can confirm this I wish I would’ve taken a video of it now there was about a 5 foot chicken snake in our coop in Kentucky. Killed the snake & threw it out in the run & boy oh boy the show they put on rofl flapping their wings and fighting each other for it and grabbing it and running away with it it was awesome no doubt 1st time I had seen that lol

I've noticed my egg whites are runny and the yoke breaks easy. Is this a feed problem?
@jeffjones9792
@jeffjones9792 Год назад
It's more like they dont have enough calcium in their diet. Some folk use crushed oyster shells, but the most sustainable way is to boil your chicken egg shells when you are finished with them to sterilise them, dry then crush up small, and toss back into the run. The chickens will find them and eat them to help their digestion, plus thicker shells for their eggs. Hope that helps.
@baddogcustoms7496
@baddogcustoms7496 Год назад
Doesn’t this encourage egg eating? I’ve been crushing eggshells for months that I make nutrient rich soil with for our plants but since I had almost a 5gallon bucket of crushed eggshells I figured I’d try it 🤷🏻‍♂️ also why not just scramble some eggs and feed to your chickens they have all the proteins they need, and all of the vitamins & nutrients that they need. Also try fermenting your chicken feed for a few days it increases its nutritional value & they intake more water from fermented food
