Glamorous homesteads online kind of annoy me 😂 Show me the real stuff!!! Love this video Tom, great idea!!

Ya know my husband built a poop shelf underneath our roosting bars in the coop. I filled it with sand and just use a kitty litter scoop to scoop out the poop. Takes 2 minutes. That takes care of at least 50% of the coop poop. It's really awesome

Thanks Tom, for being real. I also have a rooster that has charged at me like three times. I now carry a stick every time I come around to collect the eggs. I talk to him and tell him Diego if you keep it up I’m making a meal out of you. 😂

YES! Finally a channel that tells it like it is. I try to show all of our fails or unsightly areas but so many channels just show their successes and perfect gardens and make it all look easy and it's so fake. Their makeup is perfect, their hair is perfect and they never break a sweat. I know these people are not actually doing the work and are just posing for shots and I want to call them out on it but resist. lol. It's not all sunshine and roses.

I use sand in my coop and it does look clean each day. I spend 5 min each morning, cleaning the roost poop board and a bit in the run. My eggs nearly always look clean. People think I wash them before giving them. 5 minutes-every day. Clean. Sand and 5 minutes a day will save you time and energy…and sanity.

I LOVE your honesty. It makes me feel like I'm failing hard when I see all of these channels with people who have it all so together. I have a toddler and fibromyalgia. So there are days that all I get done outside is feed the animals and let them out/put them in at night. 😞 sometimes it's a mess. A lot of the time, really... But with your rooster? Have you tried showing him dominance? I had a couple of roos who were jumping at me and my toddler. I grabbed him, sat on him, and shoved his face in the dirt with the back of his head scissored between my fingers. Waited until he stopped struggling and counted to 5. Had my toddler do the same. No more nasty rooster.
@shavanerad9038
@shavanerad9038 9 месяцев назад
We got several roos with our barred rocks and two drakes with our 7 ducks (and a guard goose). My philosophy is to talk turkey (well, roo or drake) and if they don't respond they're processed. If you want a flock for sustainable replacement it can take a couple years to get good males (or reform or eliminate female escape artists, and so on). We just moved to five acres, and I totally expect two years until I get it all in order, God willing. But I would not put up long with a bad roo. He will acknowledge the humans in his life or be made into stock rather than remaining "live-stock." 😊
@BaughbeSauce
@BaughbeSauce 9 месяцев назад
@@shavanerad9038 Yup. Last year I processed one of our Delaware roos. One was sold (to protect a flock of his own) because he was great with little kids. Two I kept for breeding and protection. The last one was just EVIL. He drew blood on me at least 5 times. Sadly, I had to keep him in a large dog crate for a month or so until he was processing age. He was too aggressive and was dangerous around my toddler. I wore oven gloves to change his food and water.

You are so right! There is some woman beekeeper on RU-vid who shows how she can handle bees without any protective wear, her hair cascading down her shoulder, wearing nice cloths, handling the bees with her bare hands. It’s such BS, it doesn’t show how dirty, sweaty, and hard beekeeping can be, let alone getting stung. I don’t watch it, but have seen snippets of it. Sooo annoying!

It’s a shame that this page doesn’t have as many views as it deserves. This page was 100% the channel that helped me and my wife take the dive into homesteading. We weren’t necessarily on the fence, meaning we knew we were wanting to do it, but this channel was the one that helped us say, “Let’s not wait, let’s do this now.” Fast forward to now, we’ve bought 5.5 acres and a double wide and we’re fixing to move on our land in the next 2 months.

When it comes to a poo problem Joel Salatin says, “you have a management problem.” 😂 I’ve read the suggestion for the use of sand in chicken coops. I would avoid that for a couple of reasons. First sand can very much give mites and others a place to thrive in. Secondly, what use is the spent sand you simply cannot compost it? Blessings, Linda

I think it can be beneficial to look to how your grandparents used to handle farming, take their best practices and if needed update with Modern techniques that improve timewise or sanitation wise. So many new farmers or homesteaders are too scattered and unfocused that they only have time for the social media pretty facade rather than developing a total environment that is clean and efficient for their animals and gardens. The question is whether they are wanting to develop a healthy environment for their food production As a primary focus and have a social media documentation as secondary operation OR is their social media production primary focus and the farmstead is just the framework for that social media.

Yes real food comes dirty but it also depends on what substrate you use in your boxes. My eggs rarely have actual poop on them, sometimes some streaking but hay keeps eggs really clean! And I have a real homestead and collect eggs multiple times a day... As far as roosters, he sees you are scared and the rake is probably why he's chasing you. Put your foot up if he charges grab him and hold him upside down till he calms, rinse and repeat until he's calm

Garden Skink lizards and green anole lizards eat all insects that can fit in their mouth so you can get rid of insects using lizards, there’s a lot of plants you can grow that repels insects, honey badgers eats snakes and small rodents, song birds like mockingbirds, cardinals etc eats flying insects, 1 bat can eat 2000 mosquitoes a day and shit The best fertilizer. Mother Nature does provide everything you need to sustain a healthy life just have to learn and there’s always a lot of learning to do. Lavender plants and peppermint plant plants repels a lot of different insects. I’m still learning there’s a lot of natural stuff you can do to get rid of harmful insects, rodents and plant diseases
