'Cars' is among the few modern Disney animated films that Walt would have personally loved and been very proud to release, if he were still alive today. No doubt!

Walt would have liked it because it resembles the intersection of architecture and animation. Disney himself had talent in both areas.

I was at a place in New Mexico,I asked the owner what had helped their tourism business was it the money spent by the state tourism agency or the movie CARS? I honestly didn't understand the significance of Route 66 till after I became a truck driver. Between Oldtimers you meet at truck stops and some of the radio chatter you start to get an idea. There is the Dixie truck stop on I-55 in Illinois where they used to have a History Channel DVD of the history of Route 66 playing on a loop over a big shelf of diecast cars for sale. Then there is the Missouri Welcome center on I-44. The whole place is set up like a love letter to Route 66. The picknick area has shelters over the tables made up like famous businesses along the route. Then the building itself is set up with the color scheme of the time Route 66 was in its prime. Complete with neon signs and payphones. It still makes me laugh because they had to put up signs that the payphones are non-functional and for display only.

I wish you could find the striking view of the desert floor from the "Wagon Wheel Motel" that Sally showed Lightning on their little jaunt through the countryside. Sally: "I fell in love..." It would be nice if they could resurrect a lot of these now-defunct attractions and curio shops along the "Mother Road". Maybe help the unhoused by giving them jobs running these wonderful bits of nostalgia with housing tossed in as on-site managers and staff. It would give them a place to live, a job to keep them busy and feeling useful, and a way to restore the enjoyment of the open road that our parents and grandparents used to enjoy. A win-win all the way around!!

I was on a business trip in 2017 to Kansas City and on one of my days off I went down and went through Galena, KS and saw the real tow mater... Dean Walker was there and I talked with him for a bit. He told me he could turn his feet around, but he didn't do it for me (I didn't ask him to either). He pointed out some places nearby that were also used in the movie. He also suggested I check out the rainbow bridge in nearby Baxter Springs, KS... I did and was not disappointed :)

I thought the leaning tower of tires was reference to the leaning tower of Pisa because Luigi was Italian. But yeah one of the reasons Cars is my favorite Pixar movie franchise is because they direct referenced Route 66. I especially love that scene where Sally imagines the place in its heyday. I have never found a scene so relatable in a movie before. I literally do that same thing whenever I look at abandoned Route 66 pictures. I just look at these images and imagine all the old 50s-era, 60s-era cars driving on it. I've been obsessed with The Mother Road since I was a little kid and I've never known why. I've never even physically been to it, or any landmark on it. Other than photo tours.

There is a town in Arizona called Selgiman. I think it’s the story inspiration for the story. It used to be right on Route 66 but when 1-40 was built it went right past Selgiman and caused the town to loose its previous spark. I’ve been there 3 times. It feels like Raidator Springs and has a lot of cars stuff. Including the fun signs you see at Disneyland and in the movie. Just down from Selgiman is Peach Springs.

I went to the Cozy Cone look-alike hotel in Holbrook, Arizona one time and our room’s ac didn’t work that day and I got a nosebleed. I want to go again.

I live a hop and a skip from Galena KS. Where they have Towmater and a few other cars on display. That grey and black building in the background is an old Cat House. Aka, a whore house.

I met Bob Waldmire. I have to say he was one of the most interesting people I ever met. I have always heard Seligman Arizona is the inspiration for Radiator Springs.
