4:00. The short answer is. That is the exact frequency a 144 Hz Panel actually runs that. Just like a 60 frame panel will actually have a 59.49 optimal frequency range. It's kind of like g-sync. It's lining the frames up with the display frequency. Which makes it look smoother because you're getting more information per second. And it prevents frame tearing. By which some part of the frame is different from the rest of the display panel. Causing the picture to look split. Which vsync also gets rid of. But increases latency. So if you have the option to run at that slightly lower frequency. You should usually take it. For better fidelity with no latency penalty.

I'm pretty sure it all goes back to color vs black and white analog TV transmission. Black and white TV was 30 fps, but black and white sets couldn't pick up 30 fps color. They could however pick up 29.97 fps color signals and everything since then has been a byproduct of that.

Monitors go to 143.856 because it's evenly divisible by the standard 23.976 framerate that has been used in movies forever. This means you don't have to use any pulldown which can create artifacts or frame drops although it would be really difficult to notice a duplicated or dropped frame at such a refresh rate.

4:30 - Having a tiny bezel allows for manufacturing tolerances. Getting those tolerances closer and closer to zero starts getting exponentially more expensive. The other option would be to bury the tolerances in screen resolution where you'd get 1430p to 1440p monitors with no interior bottom bezel. Personally, though, I prefer more pixels. I also prefer interior bezels under glass to exterior bezels on top of the glass. They're more seamless and attractive to my eye. Besides, you'd have to get rid of both types to make an edge to edge display.

Good way would be to glue the screen nearest to the edge you can and have support behind it . Or entirely see through on little sticks basically and the main hardware is in a chrome cast sized container somewhere fairly close on the desk . I guess that's not very robust, the 2nd idea.
@ccelik97
@ccelik97 2 года назад
@@jamescassar5348 yeah it's intolerable if you're looking it up close (like that phone) but for monitors + farther away; meh. Also I'm not into stacking up/putting together multiple displays exactly edge to edge + the AR + VR displays are all coming to stay so at this point I don't really care. My laptop has a really good (but 1080p, but it's enough as 1 screen to me) so the next extra displays I'll be paying for will be AR glasses that work with Linux, Windows and Android (+ iOS etc those niches too if they so wish to lol).

This. It's either a thick exterior bezel to cover up the interior bezel, or keep it the way it is. Many people hate the lip of the monitor. Not to mention, it's 30 lbs. I ordered it anyway because the specs for a non-curved monitor is rare and becoming obsolete due to the popularity of curved ultrawide monitors. Hopefully non-curved ultrawides never go away because I get nauseated from the curved view. I may need to purchase an LG non-curved monitor as a backup and stash it away.

Also to add to this with the OSD software “OSD_sidekick” you can program a keyboard shortcut for the KVM function instead of having to reach around and physically and press the button, just install it on both with the same shortcut programmed. I have this monitor, I hate cable cluter and most cheap kvm’s just do peripheral switching while you’ll still need to change the display source on the monitor. You can spend a LOT of money on one that does both display and peripheral but you never know what that’ll do to your display signal. Best monitor purchase I have ever made!

For ultrawide monitor viewing optimization, buy a flushed monitor mount and you can have it as little as 2 inches from the wall. For me, this helps with the distance. so about that weird slight under/overshoot on refresh rates: the processor in the monitor isn't clocked at an even division of 120/144/240 or whatever you set. when the processor goes to make a subclock for the display's refresh rate, it gets as close as it can, but sometimes it doesn't get exact. some manufacturers probably do some firmware tricks to get the refresh rate displayed as a whole number, while others might just have the processor designed to clock at harmonics of the desired refresh rate. tl;dr: the clock of the monitor's processor isn't evenly divisible by your refresh rate, so you get decimals.

Monitors have weird refresh rates because they are most likely subdividing directly off of the clock frequency and not using the chip for that. A component-grade quartz oscillator vibrates at 32,768hz near-exactly. As the keen-eyed observer will notice, that number is NOT divisible by 144hz. So, you EITHER get 144.35hz refresh, OR you get 143.72hz, depending on how many ticks the monitor waits before the next frame (227 ticks per tock or 228 ticks per tock, respectively). I imagine a cost-cutting feature of many monitors is to just use a hard-coded table of ticks/tock directly coupled to the oscillator to determine refresh rate instead of having a chip provide a variable clock frequency with more accurate sub-divisions. EDIT: Side-note - This is why the NTSC refresh rate for televisions in North America is 29.97hz (1093 ticks per tock) and not exactly 30hz like the digital 1080p30 standard (1092 ticks per tock) and why you'll often see your monitor set to 59.95hz (29.97 x2) in Windows and not the full 60hz, as well.

Just be aware that Gigabyte's RMA process is absolute garbage and the warranty is short. If you have issues with the monitor, prepare to ship it back on your own dime (expect it to cost $40-50), wait while they decide to fix it rather than replace it, and you will be out a monitor the entire time. If it's fine the entire time, you're good. But, you will hate life if it breaks.
@lucasrossiemc

You can also use Remote Desktop, so your work PC becomes basically a window in your home PC. Works just fine with wired LAN for email, MS Office, simulations, or basically anything that doesn't require color accuracy. Also deals pretty well with a multi-monitor setup, which is hard to live without once you get used to. KVMs get expensive when you need multiple DP 1.4 and may not play nice with gaming mice/keyboard. If you use a single monitor setup, though, this screen fits like a glove.

I love these (I have the 27 inch). The only caveat with the KVM is that the secondary device has to be connected via type-c, so just get a good cable depending what you're gonna plug it into. I bought my current monitor, an Iiamya 34" Ultrawide with Fast-IPS, 144Hz Freesync at 3440x1440 in November 2020. I paid about the same [a little over £360, which is about USD$475 today]. It is an absolute beast and I'd absolutely recommend it for anyone looking for a similar option. While I know it at least wasn't available in the US back then [not sure now], it's still available in Europe for about the same price. It doesn't have a KVM, but I wasn't looking for one, and the only thing it was lacking [which is the same for this] was a curve, but it was _by far_ the cheapest 1440 ultrawide available to me [every other option was starting at like €800, but they were curved and everything else was similar or better].

But, work computer, home computer, and my consoles are all on display with the same headphones (Astro A40's, usb goes to a switcher to between the two PC's with a cable I can swap out for the PS4 when needed). MIght not be showy or super polished, but it is 100% functional from the same chair. Instead of getting an expensive KVM or a monitor with a built in KVM, I use a docking station for my laptop, with the Video outputs connected to my monitors. Have a USB Switch that has all my peripherals including mic and webcam connected to both my main computer and work computer. So when I have to switch between the two I just have to hit the change source button on my monitors and hit the usb switch. Works flawlessly, USB switch introduces any lag in mice or keyboard inputs so I can still game on my main rig with everything still connected to the usb switch. All those components together are cheaper than a lot of KVM switches out there that tend to have limited resolution outputs and usb inputs.

I have the G34WQC monitor. It looks like this is a bit of an upgrade from that. The built-in stand on this looks way better than the one that came with the G34WQC, which is pretty bad. The USB-C and KVM is a nice improvement as well. My G34WQC power supply makes a bit of a whining noise, and the built-in DAC sounds really bad through its built in headphone jack. Other than that it's a solid monitor from my experience. Power delivery over USB-C would have been nice though for a one-cable setup.

***I AM DOING THIS IN CAPITALS SO PEOPLE DEFINATELY SEE THIS*** If you have an Nvidia gpu and want a variable refresh rate monitor make sure the screen you buy is AT LEAST g-sync com-patible.. as in it says it in the spec sheet, if it is not there you are likely to run into an isse where your monitor will flicker at certain frame rates. Being freesync DOES NOT automatically mean it is g-sync compatible it only means you can turn the feature on.

By the way, just a thought here... instead of complaining about extra real estate on your screen, when the Field of View is configurable in most games, how about setting your primary view toward center, and using that side area you complained so much about for your peripheral vision aka seeing things out of the corner of your eye. It actually can help since fast motion is what that part of your vision is best at catching. Just a thought.
