Do you have any questions about teaching in Taiwan I didn't cover? Let me know! 對不起台灣觀眾,這個視頻不適合你!但是,您對台灣英語教師的經歷有任何疑問嗎?讓我知道!

I feel it might illegal to force teachers to cover their tattoos in Taiwan (although an exception I can think of could be it’s documented in the contracts). I will probably look up for the policy (from dept. of edu. for example) and the channel to report this practice.

Very informative. Can you make a video on the salaries of subject teachers (like science, maths)? Is it possible to earn more than just teaching English ?

I would love to know more about finding a good bushiban, both from abroad or on the ground - and what "good" might mean in terms of staff support, worker's rights, how not to get scammed, salary expectations.

@@rhianna6653 Hey there! Thanks for the questions. When it comes to finding a good bushiban from abroad, the best you can do is research and learn about the larger school branches. But they don't hire directly from abroad so you would still have to come to Taiwan before they go forth with a work permit and such (The case may be different for South Africa though). On ground, there are websites (like tealit.com) that list schools hiring so you can reach out to them directly. I'd print a few resumes and line up interviews. As far as good pay, $620 is the lower end of a starting base per hour, and new teachers can expect between $620 and $640 at most busibans. Also, have you checked out tw.forumosa ? It's an awesome forum for info on how to find good schools and know more about workers rights. My experience from almost working for a school that wasn't run so well was having an unstructured training method and also feeling constant negativity from staff. I left right before they were going to process my work permit.

@@KaylaCosmos This is really helpful. Thank you for your reply. I have spent a lot of time on forumosa, but I often get overwhelmed by all the different threads and how old some of them are. Ie. I'm not sure if the info is still relevant. Based on what I've read and what you're saying, it seems clear that getting a job in Taiwan is much better than getting hired from abroad. That is hard for my risk tolerance, but if I'm going to make a giant leap like this, then it's worth it. I think I just have a fear that I'll give up my life in Canada, go to Taiwan and then NOT find a job. Eek.

Hahaha, yes, for speaking, I think we are great to be around. But I do think Taiwanese teachers can teach grammar better to older kids because us native speakers don't think about the crazy rules as we just do and don't know why.

Wow, there are so many prerequisites and preparations to be done before the job starts. It is no easy job, I guess. If there are no paid holidays while working at bushiban, then it's tough. After all, balancing working hard and playing hard is a must.

awesome video!! this was super informative. since we’re on the topic of tattoos and hair, how are piercings? i have a few facial piercings (nose, septum, medusa) and was thinking of perhaps stretching my ears (i love body mods, sorry 😭) but of course finding a job comes first. i would hate to finish my bachelors and my TESL degree only to be denied jobs bc of my creative side haha . let me know what you think!
@KaylaCosmos

Hey Faith! I think for facial piercings it's not as open -- I think you'd have to hide them. I have my ears stretched though and wear plugs that fill them and never had any issues.

hi Kayla! great video! one thing you didn't cover is salary. idk if you feel comfortable talking about money or not, but im really curious how much money foreign teachers earn. thanks ❤️
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 3 года назад
Hey hey! Of course. So here's the primary things to know. Bushibans and cram schools pay by the hour and typically range from $620 NTD-$750 NTD. First time teachers should expect $630-$650 but if it's a chain school for example, they might start at $620 with no budging. Then it comes down to your hours, which can vary depending on how business is going at the school. I worked about 22 hours a week at $640/hr and made between $35,000-$50,000 NTD or around $1,000 - $1,500 USD. Public schools are salaried and it depends again. I think the government program is at least 60,000NTD-80,000 but Fulbright teachers get like 40,000 NTD a month

Hi Kayla, thanks for the informative video. I've read online that you can teach in Taiwan with an associate degree/diploma? Can you verify if this is true?
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 2 года назад
Hi Leo! Thanks for the question. In order to get processed for a work permit and residency you need a bachelor's degree. You could maybe get a job with just an associate's but it would be under the table and I wouldn't advise as that for purpose of legality and not letting getting taken advantage of by an school.

Hello! I had read that it's a bad idea to come without a job? Or maybe it was just the time of year? The blog I read said the best times of year to come were Jan/Feb and the summer for job-hunting. Second question, do you know anything about having pets in apartments? I'm bringing my two cats, and there's a whole lot of stuff to do, but I just wondered if you had any friends that had pets.
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 3 года назад
Hey Xandra! I think it depends on the time you come to the country, but bushibans don't hire from abroad, unless you go through a recruiter (just a guess on that). I'm glad I showed up and looked because it gave me so many more options and allowed me to visit schools first. As for pets, I don't have any, but another RU-vidr you can also find on RU-vid/IG "TommyFitzWho" brought pers over so perhaps he can help!

@@KaylaCosmos hey thank you for the quick reply! I didn't know buxibans don't hire from abroad so that's an excellent tip! I've seen ads from Hess and the like so I was probably just gonna go with them, but I'll likely do it your way now! Also, I'm def gonna go check out that other RU-vidr, ASAP. Thank you so much!

Would you recommend teaching at one of the big chain schools HESS, Shane)? I’ve heard many horror stories about them.
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 2 года назад
Truthfully I think anywhere can be a horror story. The first school I sought out on my own in Taipei was not fun but luckily I got out before I was too deep. I was with Shane and that also depends on the school and management. I think a big chain is easy if you want to come and get a job where you are trained and taught the specific curriculum. For example, for the most part, I like Shane's curriculum and it's easy to make fun and prep for.

Hi. Do cram schools usually hire native English speakers from the Caribbean? I usually see US, UK, AUS, SA etc. so I was curious
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 3 года назад
Hey Aisha! From what I know you need a passport from one of the countries you mentioned. But for example, I know many Filipino teachers here in Taiwan but I think it's a public school program and not cram schools. I suggest reaching out to some programs like NET and they may be able to give more information.

Can you explain the process of getting your visa from beginning to end? I'm a little confused
@KaylaCosmos
@KaylaCosmos 2 года назад
Hey Joe! I'd check out tw.forumosa.com/ to search this information. Most importantly you need to have your degree & fbi background check (within 6 months) with you to apply for your work permit if you'll be teaching English (this was for me in 2020, so perhaps some requirements have changed). But your school should help with everything else.
