I have 4 children and two have special needs. I'm curious if you have any experience with using this program on learning disabilities or homeschooling in general? I homeschooled my oldest and loved it. The next 2 have special needs and my youngest is 5. I'm scared to homeschool my 2 with special needs because I do t feel qualified. I did purchase all about reading level 1 and we are starting that this weekend and over the summer. Thanks
Would you recommend the cards be laminated? or just left alone? Just received our level 1 today for our struggling speller and I'm excited to get started! Thank you so much for your review, it really made a difference in my decision to try this out. Now I'm off to find the perfect pouch to hold it all together! Gotta love a reason for hauling more school supplies! lol Thanks!
If you get the tile set for the all about reading - will you have to buy another tile set for the all about spelling. I guess I'm asking is there any difference? Thanks
+Erica Arndt Thank you for replying! I really appreciate it. I love The Container Store and I love clear containers, but I hadn't come across those before. I'll check them out. Thank you! :)
Hi!! Thank you for this review!! I have a upcoming 4th grader and he is not very strong in spelling but would it be too easy if we did Level 1? He is currently spelling at Grade level 3 so far but we haven’t drilled the spelling rules and I am thinking that would be really valuable I would love your feedback if you see this!!!
Honestly I would say if he's not familiar with the spelling rules you might still do level 1 because it comes with flashcards to drill phonics rules. That said the word list will be way too easy for him, so you might need to do another word list. That or you can see if you can find phonics flashcards separately to drill along with whatever curriculum you're currently using.
Hi Erica, did you use Abeka Letters and Sounds for phonics when you started All About Spelling for level one. Is it a good match for the phonics program? I am looking at Level 1 for 1st Grade. My child completed Abeka phonics for Kindergarten. I don't want to have to repeat what we have already learned. I am looking for your thoughts on this. Thank you!
Hi Shelley, yes I used them together. It is a little bit overlap, but they seemed to work well together. I like the Abeka worksheets so I could make sure my daughter was able to take those skills and put them to work on her own.
Hi. Do you have a video that compares All About Spelling to Spelling You See? I'm very new to homeschooling...going to get started 2018-2019 for my soon to be 1st grader and a 2nd grader. Thank you. Love your videos and products. Thank you.
Which one to start with all about spelling or all about reading. Could not understand much from their website. My son is 4.5 years old and started reading his books so which one should I order?
It depends on where your son is. If he's just beginning reading you might want to start with AAR Level 1 it teaches pretty basic reading skills, then when he gets to first grade you can add in AAS Level 1.
What is the chalkboard app called? And is there an app that has the all about spelling tiles that can be moved around to make words. I have the one that says the sounds but can’t find the one that has moveable tiles. Thanks.
You can get the AAS app free on their website: www.allaboutlearningpress.com/phonogram-sounds-app/ I think the chalkboard app is "real chalkboard" itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-chalkboard-for-ipad/id455186311?mt=8
toe dancer my rule of thumbs is this: if the kids will be handling the item, then I laminate it, if not, then I don't. Following this has worked for us and saved me on laminating sheets haha
+organicallygrown You don't have to buy the boxes, but they're nice to keep them organized. I just used a plastic 3x5 card box from my local office supply store. Totally up to you :)
Would you ever start level one in kindergarten? Or wait for 1st? As a general rule-obviously all kids are different. And thanks! I love your homeschool videos! We are about to start our first year!!!
Katie Ricks I normally start Level 1 in first grade, level 2 in second and so on. But there are only about 25 lessons per level, so I usually break the lessons up so they stretch out over the year. Some years we've gone through 1 1/2 levels, other years only 1 depending on how they're doing.
+Stefanie Weber They're a little bit different approach. The SYS is more of an independent learning which is nice, and they do learn some of the same phonics rules as AAS but in a different manner. Instead of memorizing the phonics rules and practicing them with tiles and word lists, SYS has students identify the phonics chunks in words within a paragraph. So they practice reading the words, writing them, and also identifying vowel/consonant chunks as they go. SYS is also nice because they learn facts about a variety of topics depending on which level you use. Both are nice, I think it depends on what you prefer.
Hi, since there aren't any tests, I don't really formally grade it. I just make sure we know everything well before moving on, so it's more of a pass/fail type grading I guess. I give them 100 daily if they participate and do well.
