Comedian Dina Hashem shares the downsides of having a devout Muslim mother hire a private investigator to find out if you have a boyfriend, getting death threats for a throwaway joke about XXXTentacion, and the difficulty of translating roast jokes into Japanese. Gianmarco also thinks he discovered the origins of religion.

More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

Just wanted to mention that it's not only Islamic countries which have misogynistic citizenship gaining rules... my mom and I looked into getting Italian citizenship (not as a serious thing, but bc we thought it'd be fun to look at), and it turns out she's inelligible bc it was only her great-grandmother who was Italian, not her great-grandfather... they focus on the patrilineal side apparently

I'm in the same boat, and unfortunately its cos pre-1948, records weren't kept the same for Women. If your great grandmother (like my bisnonna) was born before 1948, your ineligible, but if she was born after, ur eligible. It's not current sexist laws, it's the legacy of sexist laws and standards that applied in the 20th century. Anyone with an Italian great grandparent born after 1948 is eligible for Italian citizenship regardless of the gender of the family member.

Hey, just want to clarify, countries with a mostly Muslim population don't have those rules because of Islam, they have them because that is simply just their rule, it could be related to their culture it could be done for political reasons, but please know it is not done because of Islam. Islam sees women as precious treasures who have rights value and responsibilities just like any man would!

Like the increased amount of ppl in this episode, and the different cultures included. It's cool. I unironically love diversity.

Soo... Not a japanese person, but spent some time there, the thing with trash cans: common theory is that they were removed after Aum Shinrikyo terracts. We experienced same thing in Moscow after Chechnya. It is also considered rude to eat on the go, so you are supposed to eat near 7/11 or inside, and there are bins there. Or you are supposed to eat in the picnic area in the parks, and there usually also are bins. As for shorts - it is usually fine if don't have curvy figure to wear short bottoms, but you should be really covered up on the top. At list it was so few years ago when i last been there.

Yea that's what I've heard as well. They removed them after the terrorist hid bombs in the trash cans at a train of subway stop. Japanese version of security theater.

The long hair is definitely an Arab thing. My mom was so mad when we grew up and cut our hair. She said she spent all of our childhoods taking care of it only for us to chop it off the first chance we got. I was like, "No one asked you to do that." As luck would have it, now I've got a daughter who wants to grow out her hair 😝

LoL Morocco is very famous for not letting its citizens renounce their nationality, you don't even have to be born in Morocco to have the Moroccan nationality. I'm not saying she wants it or needs it, but Dina could just apply for it, even if only her mother was Moroccan.

Im always sad to hear when someone has a bad experience with religion, but also every time it convinces me that it’s usually a people problem. Cuz speaking as someone who grew up muslim, with a community around me, and friends that shared the same values, like it’s always been a positive in my life. But like anything else, there are problems and it’s not perfect. I wish people were less quick to see someone do a bad thing and put it on religion or ethnicity or whatever else, like surprise, people simply cannot be chill and respectful of others. Ugh, whatever we’re all dying anyways

35:12 I feel like a lot of religion is how included you feel, I never felt included or understood in my family’s religion and because of that i don’t rly associate with it beside big holidays w family (kinda) and that’s about it.

I know a comedian who does standup that lands in two languages! Denis Chuzhoi, left Russia for political reasons, now performing in English as well under the name "Dan the Stranger". Check him out :)

Supposedly there was one used panty vending machine in Tokyo, but I never ran into it. I did, however, enjoy getting beer out of random vending machines on the street. I thought that was wild! 😂
