Four-note-per-string scales are the key to completely unlocking the guitar, and Allan Holdsworth knew this way back in the 70s, when almost everyone else was just noodling the blues in pentatonic boxes. Love this guy. ❤

I love it when you show us new Allan Holdsworth or new to me. I was listening to it while I was driving home from teaching class. So damn good I pulled over in the dark and download the whole album to my phone. What an Amazing guitar tone. A great wall of sound, yet not Heavy or Cumbersome easy to penetrate and Wander around inside of that space. A space that was complex but not Unknowable. Delicate, intricate, and soothing. Both of the solos were great, but my favorite part is that wandering Melody. It felt like I Could anticipate or predict it, but it always surprised me as to where I landed. Thanks Nick.

Loved it Nick. I'm still very early into discovering Allan Holdsworth but this was beautiful. Of course he was a Yorkshire boy, born in Bradford just 12 miles down the road from where I live now. It seems like he had a life with many ups and downs, but to be respected and admired by so many musicians must have been wonderful. A lovely sharing video.

That was great Nick. Most innovative guitar player ever for me. Tier 1 for me are Holdsworth and John Mclaughlin then we move to tier 2 where there are many. Can't go wrong with Vinny and Chad being in the pocket. Thanks for sharing. P.S. You got a special lady.

Thanks for continuing to share your love of Holdworth's music!👍 The album you're referring to where there's an illustration of him wearing a Star Fleet uniform is Atavachron. That's around the time I saw him in concert in Philly in 1987 at the Chestnut Cabaret just before 'Sand' came out.
@NicknLex

Exactly I just didn't want to but butcher the name of the album since I might say it way differently since I saw that episode of Star Treck with the Atavachron in Germany. Did he play the synth axe live?
@bmac1205
@bmac1205 5 месяцев назад
Yes, he played the Synthax on probably a quarter of the songs since they were promoting that album, plus a few tracks from Sand which wasn't out yet at that time.

I love Zarabeth, it is absolutely beautiful and so emotionally moving. Has the hairs on my arms standing to attention and tears welling-up. There is no other guitarist that could come close to such amazing playing. I fist heard Allan on UK's UK album and fell in love with his playing, and sought him out. "A Kinder Eye" from Level 42's album "Guaranteed", is stunning. You should react to that one.

This is probably my favorite solo from him, although it's nearly impossible to choose. It's up there with Low Levels. Allan's music makes me want to believe in a benevolent creator. With how pessimistic I am about existence (which I will spare anyone reading of), that is saying something. This is the music of heaven to me. It brings me to tears. I think Allan is the most genius musician/composer to ever live. Truly the most transcendent music I've ever heard and I never tire of it. I discovered Allan around 6 years ago, and I've listened to NOTHING else since, every single day.
@NicknLex
@NicknLex 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. I think this, low levels / Sphere of Innocence are amongst my top solo too. Like you said there isn't a solo or song that I dislike. I discovered Allan by chance around 2008 and never looked back. I also spend the first ten years listening to nothing else. I have been trying to incorporate his lines into my playing but it's just impossible. When he plays it's like hearing someone talk. He felt deeply misunderstood and was always highly critical of himself. I think he was never truly happy with his playing. The day he passed was one of the worst days of my life. I felt like I had lost a parent. His music gives me peace. People make fun of me since I almost mention him in every video I make. Like a drinking game. I guess they don't understand what his playing means to us. I am happy for you that you understand him. Maybe next time we have a live chat you can come and talk about what moves you about his playing. Welcome to the channel.

I've heard you mention Allan on several other reaction videos, Nick, but I had never listened to any of his music. I found this piece to be quite enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. This music reminds me a bit of artists like Craig Chaquico, who was the lead guitarist for Jefferson Starship and Starship. He has many great albums of instrumental music like this, like from his "Acoustic Planet" album. Have you heard of him, Nick? I think you'll love his music.

Nick, I'm shocked you haven't taken the time to listen to the rest of that phenomenal U.K. album. From Wikipedia: In an interview with the TeamRock site in 2016, Ty Tabor of King's X selected the album as his top pick in a "5 Essential Guitar Albums" list, stating, "I had never heard anybody think about playing guitar the way that [Holdsworth] plays on that record". You "need" to listen to that album, along with all the stuff he did with Bruford.
@NicknLex
@NicknLex 5 месяцев назад
Did I say that? I have heard all his 70's stuff ever released. Not in the amount of detail I have his solo albums. You need to listen to this! His own words in 1984" I am barely getting started" " I am just now able to express myself" " I cant listen to anything from before" Skim trough this my friend: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PvEs8KvcBmY.html
