I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Allan Holdsworth many times. Starting with U.K. in 78 Central Park NYC. I also saw many shows that he performed at The Bottom Line. He's is in my book one of the G.O.A.T 's. R.I.P. Allan 🙏💖🙏

Allan has so many mind blowing solos, both live and in the studio. I don’t even know if I could pick a favorite 😅 I’ve probably heard about 20 version of Allan playing this song live, and each one could contend for the best version. This one has some of the best audio and video quality, and I’m glad to see people loving Holdsworth’s music 😁

The best live solos I've heard from Holdsworth are the following A live version of Letters of Marque on Warsaw Summer Jazz Days that was recorded in 1998. A live version of Shallow Sea Holdsworth did with Vinnie Colaiuta in 1988 in San Antonia Texas A live version of The Things you see in 1992 in Baltimore You can find all of these on youtube

There are so many amazing ones out there, the more I listen to the live fan recordings of Allan (and official live albums), the more I realize that every show Allan ever played was an absolute gem in its own right, and I wish that many more had been recorded. Some of my favorites are the following Letters of Marquee solo in 1984 at Disneyland Hotel Pud Wud live 1993 Montreal Jazz Festival Letters of Marquee live Galaxy Theater 2000 (maybe the first Holdsworth solo that got me obsessed with Allan’s music) The Things You See live 1994 Japan (both May 4th and May 7th versions) And so so so many more 😁

as a person who lived in San Diego County 23 yrs and in San Marcos --Ike Turner lived there and Allan Holdsworth lived 10 minutes away in Vista to the west and a had studio in Vista .. also Eric Clapton used to visit JJ Cale in nearby Fallbrook and cruise down Grand Avenue on Friday nights in Escondido which is 10 minutes from San Marcos to the east....guitar legends lived in our area.. Larry Coryell is a lot like Allan in that fusion sound

nice... I saw Allan several times back in the 1980s, and no one ever had the effect on me, that I questioned whether I wanted to play anymore... but my love of music was strong, and often times that is enough... the thing with comparing Allan to an obviously great player like GG is that Allan invented a whole new way of looking at the instrument, AND did it with astonishing technique as well..... one's a master, in the best sense of the word (Govan), and the other is an innovator who took Coltrane to the guitar in a very personal way.....these days there are so many truly great players, and it creates a lot of parity at the top.... and that's why I personally like a guy like Bryan Baker----because he's very much doing his own thing, and that's tough to do these days with the level of players on the instrument now....

go back to the studio track on this one. the original solo is mind blowing. one of the first things I learned when I picked up the guitar, along with Larks' Tongues pt 3... his command of the fretboard is just unparalleled.

It was October 7th, 1992, The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA .One The frigtening solos of Allan ever during thosearly 90´s periods. There are a lot of killer solos during that September/October 1992 tour with Husband on drums: They finish the year doing a tour in Japan November 1992. Absolutely massacre shows too and previously with Chad during March/April/May Europe 1992. I saw this show in 2001 when I got it video. I could not believe it! . After seeing this magnificent and impossible you just focus only talk about blues.😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳..... What's the point of talking about something so elementary when you're seeing the impossible? It would be much more interesting for you to talk and be surprised by all the impossible and unpredictable phrases he did in this live solo (asking question and answer about those long phrases he makes like a furious saxophonist) The guitar for him was a tool. He was a soloist a repressed saxophonist and used the guitar only as a tool to express himself through this. THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! Allan Holdsworth started playing the blues in the '60s, and he did it amazingly well. Now can you imagine if Allan Holdsworth had just focused on playing the blues like everyone else? Wouldn't it be nice to have a visionary man with such a mind and ability to dedicate himself to such elementary things where most easy listening people get perpetuated on just that? It would be waste! Thank you Allan Holdsworth for being unique, unpredictable and not just another brick in the wall like the rest of the musicians out there.It takes a long time to understand visionary musicians who are ahead of their time.

I always seem to get the _right_ recommendations when I watch favorite musicians . . . "Gary Husband on Four Guitar Legends" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3iCqijUr6qY.html "The Steve Hunt Interview - Playing with Allan Holdsworth w/Rick Beato" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jZClkvwrH0c.html What a generous Guitarist Allan was, as he always let his band members go off :). Got to see some amazing Guitarists Tuesday night: Tosin Abasi & Javier Reyes of Animals as Leaders Devin Townsend & Mike Keneally of Devin Townsend John Petrucci of Dream Theater For the "Dreamsonic" Tour that ended in LA. It was pretty amazing. And here is Rick Beato interviewing 1 of each band, great answers to great questions and a bit of playing from each, including mentions of Holdsworth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FoDFEYKUB7g.html . . . but Devin, was on a whole 'nuther wave-length. - Hope everything is going great for you and Lexi, I'm sure she is blown away by Germany. Take care my Holdsworth Brother \m/.

That was why he left the Bruford band. Bill wanted him to play the same thing every time. But Al liked improvisation. Also the reason he left the UK band.
@wagstaff6135
@wagstaff6135 Год назад
I'm not 100% certain, but I think really that's why he left UK... as did Bruford. It was Wetton and Jobson who wanted him to play the same thing, Bruford said the other guys weren't used to such an advanced improviser, iirc. Anyway, not sure why he left Bruford. He was missed on "Gradually Going Tornado", though The Unknown John Clarke was pretty special on that record.

Cloning is pointless. People need to be themselves. There is no best. Holdsworth, Mclaughlin, Paco Delucia, Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, Steve Morse, Scott Henderson,, and so many more are incredible. And the reason is they are all individuals. Plus accuracy sometimes means some aren't stretching their own limitations enough. Improvising on the edge can have errors, even Holdsworth, and mistakes are ok. Its human expression.

Gary Husband is doing his usual thing, namely, playing whatever the hell he wants to; which bares no resemblance to the music. Ironically, he certainly is not the best drummer to have with Allan, despite idolising Allan! Chad Wackerman at least tries to follow the music.

Loads of people play like Holdsworth because they're copying Holdsworth's origianl style. Nobody plays like Guthrie because Guthrie is a chameleon without his own style. (Unless you consider taking country or blues or Larry Carlton and turning it into tasteless shred)
@NicknLex

Lots of people try to imitate Holdsworth and fail miserably. He will always remain impossible to copy. Many unknown players have Guthrie's chops. Take Mateo Mancuso and Max Ostro for example.
