In today’s video, we’re going to review the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in the color #2179 Coffee. The purpose of this review is to discuss what we like about the finish and compare it to Allen Edmond’s other similar colors.
Our reviews are special and different because of extensive access to Allen Edmond’s complete catalog, which will allow us to film the most comprehensive, and in-depth collection of dress shoe reviews available anywhere. BRAND OVERVIEW
Allen Edmonds is one of the few remaining “great American shoemakers,” still making their premium leather dress shoes here in the United States. Allen Edmonds makes an excellent Goodyear welted leather dress shoe that, if properly polished and resoled, can last a lifetime.
For many of our viewers, Allen Edmonds is their first experience with a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe. In short, an investment in lasting quality, that, for many, has fostered a lifetime appreciation of fine footwear.
For anyone looking to make their first investment in a high-quality, Goodyear welted leather dress shoe, there is no better place to start than the Allen Edmond’s Park Avenue. This simple cap-toe oxford is a classic - a staple that belongs in almost every closet. And there is no surprise that the Park Avenue is easily Allen Edmond’s #1 selling dress shoe. And for $425, it is a pretty good value.
The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue is available in six finishes in calfskin and three finishes in cordovan. In this review, we will be discussing the finish #2179 Coffee. For a more extensive review on the Park Avenue, check out some of our other reviews.
SHOE FINISH SPOTLIGHT
The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in Coffee is what I would refer to as a “classic medium brown.” It is quite neutral in color without any red or purple which can be found in many other pallets of brown. Next, to the black cap toe oxford, this is probably my second favorite finish and is a great shoe for anyone that dresses in navy suits or more casual odd jackets.
The two closest other Allen Edmonds finishes to the #2179 Coffee are:
#5956 Walnut
#5610 Dark Chili
The Walnut is more of chestnut or light brown, while the Dark Chili is more of a dark brown. The Coffee finish placed between these two other shoes does a great job illustrating really where this shoe stands: right in the middle as a neutral, medium brown.
One of the things I love about a beautiful brown shoe, especially one made from a high-quality open grain leather, is that the patina, or color, really evolves the more you polish the shoe. It is this patina that gives a shoe character as it ages and makes it totally unique to you. Even polishing a shoe like the #2179 Coffee with a simple medium brown polish will darken and burnish the leather over time as the open pore structure accumulates oils and other waxes
This finish could easily be taken in several different directions. You could evolve and darken the entire finish by using a Dark Brown or mahogany shoe polish. Or you could burnish the edges using dark brown…

First of all, yes they do retail for $425 but you just have to be patient and buy during sale. Because I always got mine at around $202 and these are factory first. And then I really like how Kirby is creating these videos for companies like AE. It just shows how passionate he is about shoes. Very well detailed put together review of AE shoes. I truly enjoyed watching all your videos, please keep them coming!

all their clearance, they only have weird sizes, for people like me who have normal size, like 10, 10.5, 11D that shit is not even gonna be available and be sold out in a matter of minutes, right now they are $335 for all sizes available, doubt they would go lower any time soon

Hi Kirby, sorry to be a bit off-topic, but I noticed that you have two fountain pens in your video, one I suspect to be a Pelikan, and the other I reckon is a Sailor. My hunch is that it's the King of Pen in ebonite, given the clip and the silhouette. As a lover of fountain pens, it's always good to know of fellow fountain pen users... Cheers from Australia

"These are my favorite medium brown pair... and these are my favorite medium brown slightly red pair... and these are my favorite nearly oxblood but with more brown... and these are my favorite light to medium light warm brown..." Hi Kirby. I got a pair of Daltons in this color. Could I both add a bit of red and darken them? Which would I do first? Or would Saphir mahogany add the red and darken? Also, curious what your opinion for the best color for them might be? Mostly wearing with denim but would like to be able to wear with a blue or light brown (kind of gray brown), and maybe even charcoal suit when appropriate. Thanks.

Please help me out, Kirby. I ruined my AE Park Ave coffee toes. I scrapped the leather of both and it seems the cloth inside has been exposed. I used it once and loved it. Hope I can still save it

I have 1 pair of Allen Edmonds. Bought them used, they are discontinued, dark navy, with cream stitching. Love them, but I just don't have the money to buy a new pair.

I would liked to have seen a comparison between coffee vs bourbon vs dark chili...for me walnut is in a completely different part of the color spectrum from either of those 3, and would serve a different purpose than them...good video nontheless

After getting McAllisters for just about half off, I was really gonna return them, the leather was so dry and the color was bland (coffee)! But I bought some saddle soap and found some Kiwi polish from the abyss (cabinet), and these two products alone made them feel and look a lot better (imagine great quality polish). If you do receive these and feel insecure of the color, keep them! They go very well with cuffed jeans of your into that. Kirby, the very back of the right shoe is rubbing on the back of my foot, it is extremely annoying and it does hurt, it doesn’t seem like it’s a “break it in” problem as I feel like that part of the shoe is designed not to, Any experience with this?

@@mrbadguysan I think I got my coffee defrays for even less than that. I will say I’m not really loving them, the finish seems kind of plasticky and one dimensional compared to the rest of my AEs. Hoping that polish helps them look a little better.

Hi Kirby I have a question. When tieing up dress shoes, which one is better or more formal? 1. Knot them in the normal way above the tongue and show dangling ends. 2. Tuck them in between the lace and tongue. Always appreciate your videos, Thanks!

I have found that Allen Edmonds are faithfull to their own size within the lasts. What I mean is you can get many shoes using the same last and they fit. However when you try different lasts they will fit differently.

IMO the 5 last, which is used for all the classic AE oxfords, like the Park Avenue, runs long and narrow. Verging on not true to size. Many recommend going a size shorter and wider.

With 7 pairs of AEs, i can vouch for cjur's comment about the 5 last. I'm an 11D normally, however, i'm a 10.5E in the 5 last. I find that the 212 last of the Independence collection runs truest to size in AEs catalog since i comfortably fit a 11D in it

Honestly, I define my dress shoe size by AE. I can usually ask how a brand fits relative to Allen Edmonds.

Long time watcher first time commenter. I would be interested in your thoughts on Loake back cap toe Oxfords. They were my first really decent dress shoe purchase. I have a high instep and wideish foot so somewhat hard to find good options in the middle price ranges without going custom (especially for us Aussie’s). Any recommendations for other brands accessible down under would be greatly appreciated.

I think the retail price for Allen Edmonds are a bit overpriced. In my opinion, companies like Cobbler Union and Jfitzpatrick offer better value in the US.

Don't forget Carmina, also! We have reviews of both those companies forthcoming. Generally, I certainly agree. You can find shoes that offer an ever better value for the price, but you have to try a little harder with these smaller brands. I really appreciate AE's ubiquitousness... they're everywhere and easy to find.

Damn. My navy ones don’t look anything like that. Mine look black unless you are in direct sunlight, and even then it’s subtle. I’d much prefer them to be as blue as the ones you show.

You may try lighten the color using Allen Edmonds conditioner. I've did it with my oxblood strands that were too dark. Apply it and just rub a little.

A leather conditioner wouldn't lighten the shoe. You could try to pull some pigment off using the Saphir Reno'Mat. Otherwise, the finishes differ pretty dramatically from shoe to shoe... could try to exchange for another pair that are lighter. Personally, though, I'd prefer the darker navy.

Invader coffee has some of the best coffee I’ve ever had! I love how the original invader blend is air roasted, preventing the beans from being too acidic or burnt, but my favorite coffee that they offer is the mexican chocolate. It is the smoothest best flavored coffee blend that I have ever had!! Another good blend that I’ve tried is the Whiskey blend which is my third favorite. No bitterness yet deep flavor, it is to die for!! Finally I love how the company is run by a vertern and how the website is super user friendly and delivery is fast and on time. I highly, highly, highly suggest you get yourself some invader coffee.

Why wouldnt you just buy all the colors in different styles and use the Allen Edmonds factory specific shoe polish colors ? Other than the fact that you sell shoe polish. That’s what I’ve done for years.

I'm surprised that Kirby is so generous to Allen Edmonds here. These shoes are very inelegant (a very unflattering last) and the stitching and general construction and materials scream 'cheap'. I'm amazed these shoes retail at over $400 - that's massively over-priced. There are plenty of better alternatives at this price point - my choice would be English-made for a much better quality level and price/value.

I must say, I really appreciate the enthusiasm of the viewers on this channel. There are certainly more beautiful shoes out there, but for the money, and for someone who isn't a die-hard shoe afficionado, AE makes a shoe that is 100% without question better-than-average. It is certainly a respectable beginning point. That said, I've long since graduated from AE. But many looking to begin wearing Goodyear welted leather dress shoes will be lucky to start with a pair of AE's. Again - I remind everyone - this is the beginning of our shoe review series. We're beginning with AE and G&G, but have 6 boxes of Carminas in my office, several EG's on the way, and we've reached out to loads of other manufacturers. The goal is to offer a wide survey so that everyone can make their own decision. That said, we will not review anything that doesn't offer a respectable value for the price.

I would add that for men with large, wide feet, AE is a much better bet than Carmina. I spent 90 min in their flagship store to no avail. Of course, there is bespoke, but that is an entirely different matter…

i bought both my Park Ave on sale which is usually about $200 off. I also find the Park Ave runs smaller so instead of an 8.5 EEE i go up to a 9 EE

EBAY! EBAY! EBAY! You'd be surprised what you'll find. Yes its used but with the right polishing techniques you have a good shoe. I got a pair of black Park Avenues with minor scruffs in size 8.5 for only $110+ shipping at $30.

AE routinely (basically always) has these shoes on sale. And I'd say that the sale price is the "fair price" for the shoes. I wouldn't buy them at full price, especially given how easy and often they can be found on sale. Definitely shop the sales!! That said, you can can also find some really good deals on eBay if you are especially budget-constrained. Check out our $50 eBay Challenge.

Kirby Allison I was in an AE store just a couple of days ago and found that, as of Feb. 1, they dropped the full retail price back to $395. Not a huge drop, but it’s something.

Lucky Strike Lucky Strike The construction of many Italian brands is inferior to that of brands like AE and Alden. It’s generally good practice to be mindful about placing “flash” over “substance”.

I recently got some Allen Edmonds strands in “coffee” but the color number is 2182 not 2179. Any ideas of the difference in color numbers but the same name?
