There's a reason why Jim McFarland is president of SSIA. Distributor of JR in the United States. Obviously, he knows what he is doing. And then some...great choice for Kirby's program. Maybe less than 12 cobblers that I know of that are willing to do a flush toe tap. And do it correctly! Jim is one of them, for a reason!

I knew a craftsman who repaired shoes and he could tell I was a car salesman by seeing the pivot point on a pair of AE I brought in to have repaired. He had equipment called Landiss if I can remember, the equipment had to be 50 years old.

Lovely to see a skilled craftsman at work. I especially appreciated the discussion of pros and cons of various methods of repair. Sometimes I feel that the idea of more work equals better job to be deeply flawed, particularly if that extra work may lead to extra discomfort. Stellar job!

The JR was louder getting cut because the sound of the cutting vibrations were amplified by the shoe itself. But the JR is a higher quality leather! Can’t argue with that.

I wore the Randolf slip on to work today; have many pair of AE. I have been critical of this brand as to new introductions. My Randolf's are about ready to go in for a remanufacturing. For the money, I am buying Alden.

This brings back a lot of memories. One of my first jobs was at a cobblers. I did all the polishing, ladies high heel tips, and got the shoes ready for the new soles. After I learned the ropes I was paid $9 an hour. Wasn't a lot but it was better then other kids my age making $3.35 or whatever minimum wage was back then.

Love your videos. I would love a video on cleaning white leather sneakers. I’m unsure if the typical yellow saddle soap I use for my other shoes would be appropriate for this.

@@kirbyallison Great to hear. Most other videos about this on RU-vid refer to cheap shoes and cheap cleaning products. Would be great to hear your opinion on this for those of us with higher quality sneakers we want to take care of. Tips on cleaning the white sole would be great as well.

Have you considered the oak bark tanned soles from J&FJ Baker in Devon, UK? I’d say they are better than the JR Rendenbach, but they also cost quite a lot more.

I always take my new Allen Edmonds to a cobbler and have a rubber protective sole put on. Is this not a necessary step? I’d love to have JR soles on them.

This is a lot to do with personal preference. Some people want a sole more suited to wet or icy conditions, in which case rubber works well. Some people really want the exceptional quality and durability of a JR Rendenbach sole, as well as having a more formal aesthetic. It is about balancing personal taste with the pragmatic factors of how you wear your shoes.

That's typical in any recraft. If done correctly those shoes can be recrafted several times

JR Leather seems very durable and long-lasting, but I wonder why only shoe soles are made with it from what I'm aware of. Why aren't bags made from it for example, it would fit a heritage briefcase or sack quite well.

It's really rigid. It's leather meant for outsoles, you don't want a briefcase made out of it.

Great video. However, I couldn't help but notice that the website says that you "change the cork bed on every pair of shoes". But in this video, you chose not to. Why is that?

That is simply due to a lack of being able to tell beforehand whether the shoes need it or not. We mention on the website that it is done, so that potential customers are aware that if the cork needs replacing, that is something we offer. The decision as to whether the cork needs replacing will rest squarely on Jim's expertise and experience. The shoes in this particular video did not have a need for the cork to be replaced.
