After many repairs it was time to completely makeover these cool shoes. Stitched the toe apron, new welts, heel blokes, leather heel base, cleaned dyed the uppers and added JR soles.

Man I would love to do this sort of thing myself unfortunately no shops are just gonna train a person and there aren't even schools that teach this anymore. I guess I'm just gonna buy a few hand tools and try doing it on my own stuff. If the professionals themselves don't care about their craft dying out just so they have less competition then that's their own fault. Good thing people like you still exist.

Rather than immediately try it on your own footwear, you could try looking around some thriftstores and seeing if you can find some old goodyear-welted dress shoes or something similar to use as learning projects.
@LauraRealLife

If I may be so bold, may I suggest contacting local shops and see if they'd be willing to take you on and train you? Two years ago, my then 19-year-old nephew was bored out of his mind what with the lockdown and pretty depressed about his first year of college completely cancelled; missing his friends, etc. He spent hours a day just watching youtube or playing video games until he found Bedo's Leatherworks videos and was entranced, which led him to binge watching every other shoe repair related channel he could. Wanting to try shoe repair himself "just to see if it's as cool as it looks", I reached out to neighbors and friends and we collected about a dozen pairs of very worn, old, ready for trash can shoes and with no tools other than typical household tools (and me teaching him how to thread a needle and basic sewing stitches), he started taking shoes apart, figuring out how they were put together, rewatched videos, and even managed to do a surprisingly serviceable repairs to two pairs of shoes that had uppers separated at seams. Anyways, after about three months, he approached me asking if I could help him get some "proper" leather working tools - "I'm digging this and I want to do more!" I took him into town and took him to the only shoe repair and leatherworks shop in our county, saying to him "let's ask an expert what tools would be good for starting." While lockdown had ended, most shops were still very limited in how many people could enter and masks were still required, so we had to wait outside for almost an hour until we could enter. LOTS of people had been bringing in shoes and purses to get repaired! Anyways, we go in and my nephews eyes just got as big as saucers looking around, I kept seeing him simply *inhaling* the smell of the place. I nudge my nephew to pay attention to the gentleman behind the counter and he gets all tongue-tied. He's literally in awe looking at him wearing a leather apron, hands that look just like Bedo's, it was absolutely amazing. He's a good, gentle young man, but shy is not something I'd ever call him! So I begin to talk on his behalf saying that he's been watching a bunch of videos on shoe repair and trying his hand at it on some old ready-for-trashcan shoes I got from neighbors and friends, and the gentleman (who turned out to be the owner and only worker now) whips his head around to my nephew and starts rapid-fire asking him questions. Whose videos are you watching? What have you done so far? Bunch of questions, then throws a single shoe at him and says name the parts of the shoe. My nephew, shaken out of his stupor, responds quickly to all questions and then names all the parts of the shoes. Owner crosses his arms across his leather apron, leans back a bit, goes quiet, then says, "when can you start?" Nephew gets tongue-tied again and owner laughs with this really deep wonderful laugh, says before the pandemic, I barely had enough work to keep one or two employees part time, now I'm overloaded with work and am having to tell people it may be months before I get to their shoes, boots or saddles (this is a rural county, lots of horse owners). I can start you at minimum wage (which is $11.50/hour in my state) and when you're ready to do entire repairs on your own, you'll also get a percentage of the repair cost and we'll discuss higher hourly then. Only thing I insist on is you must never stop asking me questions. If you aren't sure, if you don't know, ask me before you ruin something. My nephew is still working there; he's been doing shoe repairs on his own entirely now and does almost all the shoe repairs that come into the shop. He's done some boot, leather handbag and trim repairs and "soon", will be ready to do some saddle repairs on his own. He's getting $16 an hour and a percentage of every repair he completes and frankly, he's making more money than me most months! A few weeks ago, I'd gone into town to do some shopping and decided to drop in and see if my nephew wanted to go to lunch with me. He has his own leather apron now - that he made himself with the help of the owner! - and just looks so confident and assured, mature, and I'm just so freakin' proud of him. Anyways, he went into the back to put away some stuff and grab his jacket to join me for lunch while I chatted with the owner. I said to him that I couldn't thank him enough for giving my nephew a chance, taking him under his wing. Owner smiled at me and said "I knew the minute he walked in he had leather in his blood." Anyways, learn what you can from videos, play with some old shoes, then go talk to a shop. You never know what may happen!

@@01100101011100100111 finding a cobbler who will take you on and train you is exactly how you get into doing this yourself. It's really the only good way to do it. Successful and busy cobblers are willing to do that because it's the only way they can get help. A very good cobbler local to me recently advertised for exactly that. There just aren't a ton out there, so you'll have to search.

Great video Steve. I can’t believe what you did….and I’ve just watched you do it. They were really beat up shoes but the finished items were fantastic! I assume that the alcohol you used to clean them up was what you call rubbing alcohol. I think we call it isopropyl alcohol here. It certainly did the trick. The project looked great at the end. So you didn’t talk a lot, big deal. It’s not every time one feels sparkly enough to talk all the way thru saying the same stuff. Your fans will still follow you. I mean how can you not follow you? I’d miss all these great projects. Shine on Steve
