Allergic Reaction to HAIR DYE that happened..... TWICE! My first Sip & Spill

I am so sorry this happened to you. It must have been a terrifying experience. But girl, when you made the reference to Sloth from Goonies…, I just lost it! 🤣 Self-depiction is a form of healing (I do it too!), so I am happy, you can laugh about it today. At 56, I really don't have much grey but my hair looks thicker/fuller when it's coloured. I have fine, thin , mousy, dull brown hair. I dyed my hair with the same dye I used just a few weeks previously. The next day I woke up to the bad reaction. It felt like a million fleas were crawling around and biting my head. And like you it felt like my scalp was too small for my skull. Luckily my face didn't swell. Now when my friends colour their hair they call me to come over so I càn patch test hoping its something i can use. It's amazing that there is almost nothing I can use. Manufacturers are quick to say ammonia or peroxide free but nobody warns about ppd and similar chemicals that could land you in hospital. I also need to patch test on my scalp not my arm ..... I learnt that the hard way too. I have found a local range that has certain colours I can use. 2 shades to be exact. There are more that contain toluene ( black and dark brown shades contain ppd) but they aren't colours I like. I have found that most salon products or high end box dyes seem to give me a reaction way quicker than cheaper stuff. I may be very wrong but I think the higher end products contain more ppd and their colour lasts longer. These react in minutes whereas the cheap stuff takes hours to react and the colours fade quicker. I have made peace with the fact that hair colour isn't for me. I don't like henna and indigo cos you need to do it several times before you see the effect.

Same thing happened to me. Even the skin test is dangerous. Can’t even do a skin test. And every time you do it, the reaction gets worst. I ended up in the hospital for a week on a drip. Then I recently dyed only my hair clip in pieces and my neck blistered up. And I was on vacation. So now I have to wear horrible natural colour hair wigs, pieces, etc. I just got to accept it.

Hi Marissa, to dye your hair you can use henna, indigo and other dyeing plants wich are safer and completely natural. Thank you for telling us your experience. Even with henna it is best to test it and wait 24 hours to see if there is an allergic reaction.

It’s because you’re putting it on you scalp.. it’s meant for hair strands only 1/4 of an inch away from the scalp.

Thank you for sharing the truth of what happened to you regarding hair dye. There are so many toxic chemicals in hair dyes....and it's not really talked about. Women need to be aware that hair dye is not natural.....the only natural hair dye is organic henna lawsonia for red, indigo for black and senna for yellow. Different Ratios' can be mixed up to give you brown as well. Thank you for this and I hope you gone silver....so many beautiful silver haired women in different ages on instagram! Bless you.
