For someone who has been dying their hair for many years, I never thought I would develop a life-threatening hair dye allergy. This is Part 2 of me trying to navigate my hair dye allergy journey. In this video I reveal what products didn't work, but most importantly what did work for me. I think it's important to share these details because when I was researching hair dye allergies, especially for people who are going gray, the main focus was on accepting the grays and not dying your hair. This really left out a group of people who may not yet be ready to stop dying our hair. So if you know someone who is struggling with hair dye allergies and think this video would be informative for them, I would love it if you'd like to share it. :)

Gisele, thank you so much for sharing your struggles with hair dye allergies. I am going through the same experience. I am jet black natural hair color so it's been hard for me to find the right product. I will give it a shot!

I must write and let the world know it worked for me too!!!! Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Color, 1.0 Jet Black. Thank you soo much I really gave up on the idea of dying my hair. I’m 44 and the older I get the more gray strands I see. No allergic reaction. I was initially going to try Madison reed but watching this video discouraged me and made me try Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Color. I did not want to waste a dime on something that was not going to work.

I had an allergic reaction 2 years ago, I have not dyed my hair since because I am paranoid, I might have a worse reaction. But your video game me some hope. I am 55 and never had a problem with hair dye until 2 years ago. The dermatologist said sometimes that happens and you could just one day develop an allergy after years of dyeing your hair. I will definitely try this. Thank you for sharing your story. Btw, your hair is beautiful.

Thank you for your research. You certainly gave me hope. I'm going thru the same. Severe allergy to Madison Reed. I used it for a long while and then went to their salons and maybe it's because they left it on for longer than I did at home..... causing major allergies. So I thank you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm suffering from the same allergy. I’ve tried so many products. I even tried that product you showed that worked well for you but it did not cover my grays well. Any way you can make a video on how you used the product? (How you mixed it, how long you left it on your hair etc.) thank you for sharing your beautiful story. I have curly, dark hair as well and totally feel your pain!

Thank you for this video ❤ I’ve been having such a hard time finding information about this subject. I’m 36 and have been finding some more grey hairs. I so don’t want to go grey yet. It has felt like the options are a wig or going grey. Because of my previous reaction I must admit that I’m quite anxious for the patch test even.

Because of your video I know have my confidence back!!! I been hating how much grey I have had in my hair. I started getting a little grey in my 20s. 36 and it started coming in alot. I'm so allergic to every hair dye. I have tried everything and been so down about it. Researching for 10 years and know it was ppd and ppt I came across your video and we had the same exact issues. That hair dye you recommend I went out bought it and got a patch test no issue. So a few days ago I went and did my whole hair. I know have my brown hair back. You are amazing. Ty for those videos I'm so happy! And not in an pain from the dye!

Thank you for posting. There is Wella Koleston Perfect ME+ which does not have PPD and PTD formulated for 60X less allergy. The ME+ replaces PPD/PTD.

It does have ppd. It’s just modified ppd.

I’ve been using Herb Speedy one. I doubted the Simply Color would be okay since it seemed gimmicky but now I’ll try it out. Hate that Herb Speedy doesn’t last long and makes me scared that it cautions not to use during your menstruation period🤔 I had a reaction to the Madison Reed one as well. Having black hair has been my identity for years. I’ve been devastated by the allergy. Wish they would come out with better options 😢

Bleach your roots thwn add orage arctiz fox then transylvania black. Thebleaching makes the color hold.

I just found your video. Thank you for posting this. I also had a hair dye allergic reaction last year. I had been dying my hair for many years. I am blonde but had a salon do a dark brown root for an ombré’ look. The stylist left it on extra time so it would take better. I noticed my scalp felt itchy, but didn’t think much of it at the time. Then after that I did root touch up kit s at home to save money. It was when I started using a medium brown from the age perfect line at Sally’s that I had a bad reaction, very itchy scalp, burning feeling on scalp, rash on back of my neck, around ears, and sides of neck. I went to Dr. and she gave me prescription for a steroid. Then she said I would still react as long as any of that product residue was in my hair and she suggested I strip my hair, with head and shoulders and crushed vitamin C to get the color out. It worked. Since then I’ve been searching for anything I can use. I’ve been using a rinse from Sally’s that stays only 6 washes. Color selection isn’t good.

Didn't work for me BUT I do have eczema problem as well so keep that in mind people :/ I got motivated and ordered it from amazon link in US since it was not in Europe so I had to pay close to 100 Euros(postage, import tax etc) to get a 13 dollar product but anyways I really hoped it would work but since I am allergic to dyes I did a patch test and unfortunately it failed close to 48 hours. My search continues but I hope someone else might benefit from it. Good luck people and Thanks Gisele for sharing your experience at least you are free from this curse :)

I have been struggling with your same problem, and I don’t want to go gray. I too tried Simply Color. The first time I tried it I had no reaction and no itching afterwards. I thought I had found the answer to my problem. Unfortunately the second time I used it I had severe itching which lasted almost a week after. I just purchased Madison Reed which I have not tried as yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I had the same exact situation. My first time trying no reaction whatsoever. I thought after years of trying I have found the answer. Just 3 days ago I patched test and I’m so sad, I got burning sensation and itchiness and redness. I can’t believe this. Do you have other product recommendations. I’m going to try the Korean product she mentioned on the video.

I also became highly allergic to ppd in the last year. I am in the 70’s category /dark brown hair and I refuse to be grey. I have been fumbling with what to use so I am now trying a little routine. I take a Zyrtec nightly and some bendril before my appointment. My allergy is so bad that it is air- bourne. One of the stylist suggested an anti itch product as an add-in and I had absolutely no scalp reaction!!! Unfortunately, I did start to feel sick and a little dizzy a little later. But I never had any itchy reaction. When I wash my hair I put a cream all over my face since my face will swell up if it is not covered. I am going to continue until I can’t do this or see if allergy shots from the doctor would work. Anyone who is just allergic on their scalp should try the anti itch add in. It worked great but like I said I used some Benedril before the appt.

Eh if your allergic to the hair dye...stop using it.....taking alergie medication wont work, eventually youl end up I'm hospital

I ordered this product online to the UK cost me £48 done a patch test behind my ear didn’t get any itchiness but I’ve got slightly red not sure what to do now use it or not..??

I was so happy the first time I patched test and no allergy so it was a success. I haven’t dyed my hair in several years due to allergy. But 3 days ago I patched test the same tube and I was shocked I’m having itchiness and burning on the patch area. I’m super sad about this. I couldn’t believe believe. I’m going to buy today the Korean hair dye you mentioned. I’m so sad the product you recommended is no longer a go for me. Do you recommend any other products?

I developed an allergy to PPD/PTD after 10 years of dying my hair. I’ve tried a few different dyes since then - including Madison Reed. The Swartzkoph dye she shows in this video truly was an unexpected life saver 🩷🩷 I had absolutely NO reaction to this product and it’s easily found at places like Walmart and Target. PLUS it’s only $11/$12. Definitely worth the try if you have an allergy to most hair dyes. Don’t forget your patch test, bestie!

Same I've used the same box dye for 10 years too! Revlon and I've been using henna ever since, but I'm thinking of switching back so hopefully this works :)

I enjoyed your video. I went out to find the product b/c of the whole No PTD or PPD… I was so excited but when I looked at the ingredients it had para-phenylenediamine in the ingredients. Para- phenylenediamine isn’t an alternate name for PPD but the actual name. I didn’t see anywhere on the container that it didn’t contain PPD and PTD. Great video, but what a disappointment . Glad it worked for you though

Hi Angela, thank you so much for watching my video and taking the time to leave me a comment. Could I ask if you are referring to the Schwarzkopf Simply Color? I can't speak to their other colors except the one I tried which was Jet Black, but taking a look at the box I have it states that there is no PPD nor PTD. There is something called Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate (HPPS). When I researched this ingredient, it showed that it was an alternative dyeing agent for PPD-sensitive individuals. At first I thought the same as you and I wasn't going to try it, but after doing the patch test it was a success. I hope you too can find something that will work for you without the awful allergy symptoms. Take care!

Elumen might the answer to your problems. It‘s a physical and not a chemical color. No developer. Only thing I can use with my allergies.

This product has p-phenylenediamine in it..(PPD). The main culprit for allergic reaction..... Why could you not find it written on it?

YOURE A GOD SEND. i was going to have to do henna and then indigo a hundred million times over my natural dark blonde hair!! I was dyeing my hair black with Schwarzkopf before i developed allegies, not realizing that the brands i used when i got severe reactions like the blisters and all that behind my ears... were the problem. I gave up and now im realizing i shouldn't have ever left the Schwarzkopf brand.

I have ppd allergy and tds allergy, can not find a black hair dye 🥲🥲🥲 only goldwell elumen and that one does not cover the grey hair and is never black it turns out purple red
