The vet diagnosed my eight year old rescue dog with atopic dermatis last fall. The medication bought from my vet did little to aleviate his issues, but it did cause some worrysome side effects. After many attemps to determine the cause, I recently changed his food to single protein (duck/lentils) grain free (Nutrisource Vita) He used to eat salmon/sweet potatoe - grain free until I watched a documentary on farmed salmon (contamination). He is doing much better - no more ear infections/hot spots and itching. I admire your bravery in the face of the "big pharma".

Thank you! The dog food I have been using, (that worked) just changed their formula, and my dogs all had a reaction to the new version. So I have been stressing about what to feed them. I've never heard of that brand and will look into it. Thank you for the suggestion!

My dog chews his paws after his walk. After ruling out other options, I concluded my dog has contact dermatitis allergy to a grass. Timothy is probably the culprit. As soon as we come in from a walk, I wash his paws with water and a mild soap, then rinse and dry. He no longer chews his paws.

My dog ( a miniature poodle) was having TERRIBLE allergies after her last vaccines in May. ( won’t be doing that again!) she was itching horribly and even her fur was coming off of her paws and feet We started giving her Ivermectin- three days ago her skin is no longer red and horribly inflamed! She is no longer licking and biting her paws and feet! It’s even decreased her yeasty ears and paws. I bathe her with a shampoo I made ( 1 cup green tea, 2 Tblsp apple cider vinegar, 2 Tbsp of baby Castile Shampoo. I bathe her with this twice weekly when she was itching the most, other wise only once weekly . I can hardly believe how amazing Ivermectin works in bringing down the severe inflammation she was suffering with.

The pet and pet food industry has gone hog wild with more and more, very expensive this and that. Everything associated with terms like "pets" "dogs", "cats", you name it, the costs are skyrocketing. Canned dog food is mislabeled in ingredients. They list, usually meats of some kind when it should be water. All the dog food I have bought lately is 78% water but it's listed last in ingredients list. And it can cost over $5 a can if your dog has any issues. Dry food is no different. Higher and higher costs. And vet bills! You better hope your dog or any animal stays healthy and doesn't need a vet. You can spend a fortune on these animals and it's no wonder more and more people are getting rid of them or not giving them what society demands of them. I love our dog but pet ownership is getting rediculously expensive.

My dog has been great free of ear infections since I changed his food the big difference from the last food was the food I have him on now is potato free both white and sweet potato free as well as grain free. The protein is is white fish instead of salmon that was more less a cost cutting on my part but I think the white fish still does good. It also contains flaxseed as the 3rd or 4th ingredient but a put about a shot of flaxseed oil in the kibble as well. Flaxseed oil is also relatively cheap it's a cheaper alternative to fish oil. Also my mums dog has been doing great since I put him on 95% curcumin before I got him on it he had the hardest time getting around with his bad hips. Im greatful for this channel it's helped 2 dogs.

The shelter already had him scheduled for the surgery to remove his ear canal :( I talked them out of it, took him to my personal vet and a dermatologist. @katk3381 not sure if this question was meant for me or the other person, but at the time I was feeding my dog Boreal grain free while fish. He had been doing great on it, however I've had to change his food once again because Boreal raised their prices and I can't afford that food anymore, partly because I got another dog it's just too expensive. I now feed my dog First Mate with Lamb I've also took a chance with the grain friendly version because I don't exactly know if he has a grain allergy or if the breader just said feed him grain free as a way to be on the safe side. But I thought we'll the breeders I got my other dog from had her on a food with grains and chicken as the protein that may as well keep it that way she's had zero ear infections and she's almost a year old. The only difference with my one dog that had the ear infections is his protein is lamb but its still grain friendly I know for a fact he's allergic to chicken, so his is lamb

PLEEEEASE HELP!!! I NEED YOUR ADVISE QUICKLY. My dog is in TERRIBLE SHAPE, she is MISERABLE and I don't know what to do. She is a double merle (blind and deaf) 5 year old Australian Shepherd. I took her when she was just a puppy because the idiots who bred the parents, were not aware that the pups would likely be blind/deaf by breeding 2 merle dogs. The girl who was puppy sitting for me (a Vet Tech if you can believe that!!!) allowed her into the barn (she was 2 months old) and when her dog started chasing the FULL GROWN cows, they trampled on my poor Laila...it broke nearly every bone in her body and the Vet was not very optimistic that she would survive. She didn't move for 21 days. I carried her in and out to use the bathroom and carried her food and water to her. Then due to the deep muscle tissue damage, her back leg swelled so big that it was ready to burst, again, the Vet was not very optimistic. But my Laila is a fighter!! Every summer she gets allergies and she is broken out and scratching all over. She is bleeding in spots. I have tried oils and ointments. I watched your video and I have ordered her 1200mg Beta Sitosterol tablets (she is 87 lbs.....yes, quite overweight), they have not arrived yet. *I went to the Dr last week for my foot, and was prescribed Methylprednisolone Tablets 4mg, I have not taken them and she needs them worse than I do. I am only working part-time and with the economy what it is, I cannot take her to the Vet, I have absolutely no money to take her. So I am going to start her on them (there are 21 of them) How much do I need to give her? I am desperate, she is in MISERY!!! PLEEEEASE HELP!!! 😭

Yes, i can back this up. My dog gets itchy in the summer and spring. Only started last year as she was getting older. Last year was awful but this year i was prepared. Fish oil works amazing but please remember it takes at least three weeks to build up in their system so start it early long before itching season starts. Also used quercetin. Use ear wash if they get waxy build up or itchy ears. Use it for a week and then every other day for one more week. Johnsson itch spray is cheap and helps their itchy paws. Antihistamines work a little. They're not amazing but do offer some relief.

Omg, thanks for this!! My service dog has insane food AND environmental allergies. Can you do a similar video about food allergies and how to interpret the reports? I understand a 300+ for each allergen is severe. My service dog rates up to 2800 (give or take) for multiple allergens. I was told not to give him any food that isn’t hydrolyzed (and I sort of get that), but I also don’t get it because I don’t see how keeping him away from virtually himself is going to help either. Isn’t that just going to make him more prone to becoming allergic to other things? And it’s nearly impossible to avoid things in the world. For instance, coming back to this video . . . . Is Krill or any fish oil okay for a dog that’s got a diagnosed food allergy to whitefish? I was told stay away from ALL fish, but salmon, krill, and many other common types of fish were NOT on the allergy report. Only whitefish was on the report (as far are seafood and fish goes - dairy and mostly other types of proteins are listed, as well as some ). I know the lab can’t test for everything on the planet, but salmon and other fish are pretty common, so am I wrong to assume I’d see them on the report if they were problematic? And is it a problem to give a dog something that is derived from allergens or may be related in some way? I’d also love to hear more on the subject of feeding for food allergies. Again, I was told hydrolyzed food/treats. I haven’t yet switched because the truth is that I can’t afford the price tag. The food he’s been eating for several years now doesn’t have the worst of the allergens on his list. As a service dog, he’s not allowed to eat anything resembling people food. He must have high quality kibble the way the organization trained him (like most service dogs who go into public places) and the vet recommends what is best to give. I’ve looked at a few hydrolyzed brands, and I don’t like hearing “by-product MEAL” in the ingredients from Royal Canin, Science Diet, etc. I also don’t understand why these brands have weird first ingredients like Corn starch. How is corn starch the main ingredient?! Perhaps you can recommend the best possible hydrolyzed option for people who really cannot feed their dog a raw food diet like you generally recommend. Perhaps that’ll be an option when he retires in a couple years or so, but for now, we need a hydrolyzed kibble options that are healthy and aren’t a fortune (hopefully). Or perhaps he can eat food that isn’t listed on his test results, which would widen the playing field a great deal in terms of options. So if I don’t see Salmon listed on there, maybe a salmon based food would be ok? My boy got diagnosed with his allergies in 2017. They were horrendous to begin with (like a few allergens going up to 2000, but most ranging in the low to upper hundreds). They’ve really gotten way worse when I noticed a huge change in symptoms and I had him retested like 10 months ago. He’s on immunotherapy since 2017 for the environmental allergies - and he had the prescription changed after he was tested again, obviously. What’s your opinion on that subject? I sometimes wonder if it’s helping. I once sent you both of his allergy tests on Facebook a couple of months back - maybe you saw and that’s what prompted this video. I’d be ok with you using them as an example for illustrative purposes to help people learn more about these tests and how to properly read them and know what to do for the dog as a result. What about pharmaceutical grade Colloidal Silver drops like the amber colored ones from Silver Wings? They come in very high doses. It’s supposed to help inflammation, among other things. Great video! I hope to see more on this subject. It’s very difficult to manage the symptoms - not just itching, but flaking, broken skin, infections, watery eyes, sneezing, a chronic phlegmy cough, GI symptoms (like occasional poop issues, puking, gas, etc.) , etc. Thankfully, they don’t get in the way of his ability to keep working, but I worry it’ll send him to an earlier retirement if we don’t figure out how to get this under control ASAP. He loves to work and I want him to be able to keep doing it so long as he’s able and enjoys it! Would really appreciate a more in depth look at all the issues that arise and how to handle them. I know allergies aren’t typically as severe as my boy’s, but they are common enough that your audience would benefit from hearing more. Thanks, doctor and Tula!

@@douglaschristine8387 yeah but those ingredients are VERY concerning to me and don’t seem to have high quality nutrition. I am not criticizing your choice and am glad it seems to work for your needs, but I have to be extremely selective with feeding a working service dog a high quality diet. When I initially saw the ProPlan formula you mentioned, my first reaction was “Corn starch as the first ingredient?! Why?! This ProPlan formula barely touched a chicken - it’s the TENTH ingredient on the list. Looks like a lot of filler and junk in this ProPlan formula. It has THREE different kinds of oils in the first 7 ingredients - why?!” Maybe you can shed some light about why these formulas seem to have so many weird ingredients and very little nutritional benefit. At first I thought it might have something to do with the hydrolyzation process, but when I looked at other types of prescription formulas for things like kidney stones, etc., they all had the same types of weird stuff in them and less actual food. Here’s the ingredients for the ProPlan Hydrolyzed formula as an example for anyone unfamiliar: Corn starch, hydrolyzed soy protein isolate, partially hydrogenated canola oil preserved with TBHQ, coconut oil, powdered cellulose, tricalcium phosphate, corn oil, dicalcium phosphate, hydrolyzed chicken liver, hydrolyzed chicken, potassium chloride, guar gum, salt, choline chloride, magnesium oxide, DL-Methionine, taurine, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin (Vitamin B-3), copper sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate (Vitamin B-5), thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin B-12 supplement, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), folic acid (Vitamin B-9), Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin (Vitamin B-7), menadione sodium bisulfite complex (Vitamin K), sodium selenite. B-2627 Same problem goes for Royal Canin and Science Diet’s hydrolyzed formulas. They have similar weird ingredients that are mostly fillers and/or byproducts, among other things. I’m very disappointed because I’ve used Science Diet Adult 1-6 since 2018 when California Naturals went out of business (he grew up on their chicken and rice LID at the service dog school, and I continued CN at home until we had to switch). The SD Adult 1-6 has chicken as a first ingredient and other balanced ingredients thereafter that make sense so it’s upsetting to see that their prescription formula is not nearly as nutritious. It’s upsetting that most prescription formulas seem less healthy than many non-prescription formulas when you’d think it would be the reverse. I definitely saw one prescription hydrolyzed brand that has real chicken as a first ingredient and seemed like a better option than most brands I’ve seen, but I’d love to find a few more possibilities. I wrote it down somewhere and don’t have it at hand. That’s why I’d love for the doc to speak more on this subject. It would really help people understand prescription ingredients better and hopefully help find the best prescription hydrolyzed choices out there.

Hello I'm so sorry that you and your dog is going through this,i know how stressful, and frustrating it is for both because just like you i went through the same situation with my baby girl Bella,a french Bulldog,I can relate.unfortunately a lot of the information is only trying to treat the symptom but not addressing the root cause of the problem which is frustrating to see,and this is a veterinary doctor.so let me start by telling you Bella story.i got Bella at 4 months old she's a black frenchie with white on her chest.what I loved about Bella was she had beautiful fur almost mink like.i changed her kibble diet, and put her on a home food diet a protein, turkey, vegetables, sweet potato,or brown rice she was doing great.occasionally I would switch up the protein to either beef, salmon,or lamb to give her different variety.at 8 months old I noticed one day she started itching, and constantly licking her paws.i mean it became so aggressive to the point she would scratch her self till she bled, also she was loosing her fur,and the never ending dandruff.at this point I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with demadetic mange they gave me medication, antibiotics ,and antibacterial shampoo and was told to give her weekly baths which didn't work, and her condition just kept getting worst.eventually I went to another vet and they told me she had food allergies.Once again they gave me medication, shampoo and was told to put her on a limited prescription ingredient diet, which is costly, you know, for 12 weeks.so I followed their instructions weekly baths, and her limited diet, but once again her condition didn't improve.the frustration seeing my dog scratching and damaging her skin, the severe dandruff.she's was stressed knowing I'm stress believe me she knew, she would sneak away from me just so I wouldn't see her scratch her self, poor girl.for a year in a half I'm going through this constant cycle back and forth from the vet.within that time she was switched to a hypoallergenic diet which didn't work, poor girl, and poor me feeling helpless while she's hurting herself it was effecting her quality of life. The last visit to the doctor he advised me to give her a allergy test.the only thing was I had to wait a month because they put her on a steroid for her allergy called temaril p which seem to slightly help with her itching.so I needed to wait a month after getting her off this medication.so within that month I started doing heavy research not like I haven't been doing from the beginning, like watching videos just like this one with no help.i started researching about gut health and how gut health is closely related to skin health issues.so I came up with a plan, the last ditch effort before I took her for a allergy test which we both know is costly and honestly I lost faith believing that it was not going to improve her condition.so I came up with my own regimen.#1 treating her coat.i brought her demoscent you can get this on chewy they come in individual amples, once a week across the top of her back.# 2 I brought her a butter conditioner, and a 100 percent pure shea butter and I would combine the two. 2 part conditioner butter,1 part shea butter which you need to melt before mixing the two.i would rub this all over her daily because her case was severe,I also got her pajamas and kept on her at all times so she can't damage her skin if she scratch, which she continued to do.#3 I ask the doctor to represcribed temaril p for a month supply to reduce her itching while on her regimen.also no baths, you heard me correct no baths because I felt it was not letting her natural body oil build.yes she was stinky.#4 the most important part of the whole regimen was to build her gut health.do your research on probiotics because 70 to 80 percent of probiotics for dogs are bogus they don't work.make sure they have atleast 4 different probiotics strains, and over 2 billion cfu.i first started with Tomlyn probiotics.I would give it to her daily, which comes in individual packets powder form, and i would give her this every morning.it would mix it with 2 spoons of plain yogurt with some blue berries.in the evening during her feeding I would put a cap of fish oil,and some vitamin in her food to build her immune system.so i continued this regimen dermoscent once a week ,butter conditioner mixed with shea butter daily, probiotics yogurt daily, vitamin and fish oil daily in her evening feeding ,and the temaril p daily for the first 3 in a half weeks until I noticed she was improving. Within 3 in a half weeks I noticed her itching substantially decreased, also the dandruff, and she was becoming the little happy girl she once was before this ordeal. In 4 weeks she didn't even stink no more, honestly it's been a month since the last time I bathed her and she doesn't stink.i will probably wait another 2 weeks to give her a bath.to make a long story short I think the root cause was her gut health and honestly I think without the probiotics none of the other stuff would have helped, because it was just trying to treat the symptom, which was still a benefit to this regimen.its been over a month her itching decreased by 95 percent, her fur is growing back.I decrease the temaril p to 1 every 3 days, and if she keeps improving i will take her off them completely by next week that's the goal.the butter conditioning have been decreased to twice a week hardly no dandruff, and most of all she doesn't stink.if this works which I believe it is.I'm going back to the vet and show him her improvement, also that her allergies was to do with having a compromise immune system do to poor gut health, so maybe they could take this under consideration when the next patient comes in with their dog suffering with allergies.I Hope this helps you,and everyone else who's going through this.i will be posting a video within 2 month, continuing her daily probiotics supplement once she's fully cured.btw pawfy makes a great probiotic supplement which I will be using next after I'm done with the tomlyn.

Are you able to give us an update on your regimen with Bella? Did you get it work to 100%? We are having issues with our wonderful rescue dog. He is chewing to the point of almost bleeding. Our main issue is that we have been trying everything but seeing no lasting results. Last year we did the big pharma route, it did help a short while, but I believe it cost some major issue in another area. We often can't tell if his licking or biting is allergies, or he is hurting somewhere or a learned coping behavior. He is on Dr. Jones products for allergies, and we make his food at home with really healthy ingredients (not a lot of other treats). The vet had no advice outside what they are paid to say and we are loosing hope to help him. He wares a cone most of the time so he doesn't hurt himself. No flea or parasites, clean bill of health as of yesterday. Any advice?

This occurred yesterday. The night before I had soaked her aggressively in oatmeal shampoo and ground oat fiber. I forgot to rinse her but remembered after an hour when I lightly rinsed her and packed her itchy areas with oatmeal packs. Absolutely no itching that night and the entire next day. As soon as her paws hit the sand, she bargain scratching. I could have cried. But at least I know what it is and how to relieve it. What do you use?

Thank you so much for this detailed information! i just got a foster dog who is a Shar Pei and poor things jus eats her paws and legs up. She has no fur left. She is already on medication that doesn't seem to be helping, and is already on a sensitive skin and stomach diet. So looking for other alternatives once she gets done with her medication.

Hello Dr Jones I wanted to ask you about couple things I was told to maybe use. First coconut oil rub threw dogs skin/coat or give them a teaspoon of it to eat everyday And second I was told I can take a spray bottle and add A cup of organic apple cider vinegar to it and a few drops of essential oils like lavender or peppermint oil and fill the rest of the bottle up with water. And then mix it up and gently spray dog with it, twice a week. Is this a good idea or not. I have not tried it wanted to get some opinions about it first see if anybody else has tried this see if it works

I’ve tried the coconut oil on her skin and in her food n all she did was lick it off and kept licking 🤦🏼‍♀️ BUT..from what I’m learning from these videos is this will all take 8 weeks or so to see results. 😮

Our little poodle has always had runny eyes and now his licks his front paws quite often. Are these issues allergy related? What would you suggest we do for these conditions? Thank you!

Dr. Jones, do you still recommend Krill oil for a dog who has IMTP? I read Omega 3's have anti platelet effects but she suffers from seasonal allergies (intense licking of paws and butt)
