I grew up in a Christian fundamentalist setting, it was very strict and had a very strange social structure. As you were asking about “explaining yourself” to new people you meet I could so relate! Feeling so anxious that you feel the need to give a pre-explanation of why you might act “different”. If anyone reading this is dealing with this, just know that over time you’ll gain confidence as you learn the new normal, and (hopefully) understand that your past does NOT define who you are. PS: a therapist can help so much if you feel like you need some extra help. 💕

Having grown up as a foster kid I had many opportunities to experience different religions - the good, the bad, and the hypocrisy. However, as an adult I don't have a specific religion. My religion is to be a good person and live an honest lifestyle, kind of a do no harm outlook. I am happy to see you ladies have freshly opened minds and exploring your infinite life options! ❤

How did I just realize you have a channel? I’m so excited! I wish Escaping Polygamy was still on; it deserved so many more seasons! I’d be so interested to find out how escapes are happening during the pandemic, or if it’s even been possible.

It does suck there won't be more seasons, but I'm sure with Jessica having a new little one on top of she & her husband have other children as well she and all others involved have other areas of life they need to focus on and have growth in. The 4 seasons have helped get it out that there really are those fighting to escape such a difficult situation they do not want to be part of.

No matter where we come from a lot of us feel like an outsider for one reason or another! In my case my oldest brother who was 13 years older than me molested me. I always felt different and apart feom everyone even my own family! Now you guys are adults if that feeling comes over you just remember that the people around you may likely feel the same way! You guys are awesome! You should be proud of yourselves at all times!!!

Sometimes people have asked me if I'm from a cult. I don't drink and make no apology for that. I have been in a monogamous marriage for 45 years. My language is clean. I guess those things make me strange but I don't care. I'm happy. I left home when I was 17. Home was not a good place for me and I was very intentional about doing things differently than my mom. I'm certainly not perfect but I have made mostly good choices. I am determined to live my best life.

I understand about how you feel about protecting your child. I was like that with mine. I was abused in my house when growing up by my step-father and older brother. Those feelings to always protect your child will Never go away. Very protective of him from other family members because I was so scared that I was not protected so I made sure Everyone knew I would not stand by and let people treat him how they want to. My family didn't treat him bad ever just was a fear of mine. I did tell my mom that I was not going to be like her as a mother because she didn't protect me when I was going up. I would also stand outside the public restroom while my child was in the restroom and making the men stand out until he was done. He was about 9 or 10 that time. People used to call me a helicopter mom. LOL! He is now 18 fixing to graduate High School and fixing to go to college this next semester. I am so Happy that you guys can still function as adults because when treated that way, people can actually go either way in life (down a bad road or trying to make something of yourself). Way to go Ladies:)

A little late to this one but Amanda, I grew up on the “outside world”, and I still feel this way sometimes! That I owe other people around me an explanation and they can see right through to my “weirdness”. I think it happens to a lot of people and unfortunately, nobody hands you a rule book (there should be one), explaining “normal” life to you. Validating you that it’s ok to feel this way. You get better at it over time. Therapy, self reflection, and (some) self help books make it easier. Hugs from NY.

I love hearing how just learning about psychology and sociology is awesome and almost unexpected. I feel fortunate knowing that I learned enough in my home environment and socially that both of those classes were offered in my high school as elective classes. The extra ones we can choose to take. And I took both. And looking back reflecting, took both for granted. Except ms smith in psych 101 did teach us how to give awesome hand massages. Lmao. This was 11 years ago. 😂

Would Allison’s adopted mom Luann do a video about her story? I think I’ve noticed her name in some of the articles about the Order and the Mary Ann situation. Your interview is just beautiful. I am so glad you can talk and discuss without fear of being caught. I love you and your beautiful brothers and sisters who have made it out of the cult. I agree with you regarding after this life. I just read the Holy Bible and trust what it says. It is true it is not about religion but about a relationship with Jesus. He loves us so much, and created us to have a relationship with Him. He is leading you and that is why He died for you, so that you could be with Him. Right now we are preparing for our next "jobs" in heaven. We will be ruling with Christ, teaching, helping, overseeing, etc, based on what we have learned now. There is no "sex" in heaven, so there is only perfect love and clarity. There are no "men with wives". We all are equal and have responsibilities. You might want to listen to some of the near death stories of people who have gone to heaven. It is absolutely awesome and we are not in a blissful state, we are busy. There is no sin up there so we have perfect freedom, comfort, sense of worth and responsibility. I pray God will show you and He promises that if you ask for wisdom, he will give it to you. Just sharing what I have learned and love you so much. Thank you for sharing and for the work you do in getting out the truth. God Bless You.

I grew up in a more mainstream/accepted cult. In university after for years after multiple people asked me if I’d recently escaped from the Amish because I was so lost in the real world. I had no idea how to function. I’ve just accepted that I’m very weird compared to other people, and will never really “fit in” anywhere. And also, trust me. Don’t become a doctor unless you enjoy people screaming at you daily when you did EXACTLY what they asked you to do for them. Being a doctor honestly sucks. Be a nurse. People actually like nurses.

This was really interesting! I was wondering, when Allison was talking about feeling as if she needed to be all in or out with a religion to belong to it (as in, needing to 100% agree with everything in it), whether you guys think that was shaped by your upbringing in a cult where you needed to fully adhere to every belief? I was just speaking with a friend today about how we're always going to be limited in what we know - whether you're atheist, materialist, Buddhist, Christian, Sikh etc. we're all human and limited in what we know about reality. So, to me it makes sense that no matter what your beliefs are (or what religion you belong to) you won't be able to agree on 100% because you can't actually know 100%. Personally, I went from agnosticism to Christianity - I have a different understanding about reality now but I still know that I don't and can't actually know all about it. It seems like cults tend to say that they know exactly what is right and wrong about everything and that there is no room to question or even to have the willingness to think about things for yourself. I'm really interested to hear what you think about that?
@allisoneames8634
@allisoneames8634 2 года назад
That’s a really good question. I have no idea where that belief came from. I agree that there is no way to know absolutely everything about a religion but every time I was interested in a religion, if ONE thing came up that I didn’t agree with, I was out. I knew that religion wasn’t for me. Maybe I just see people who do are a part of religions even though they pick and choose what they’re going to believe or live by in that specific religion and almsot always, they feel like outliers in there own “community” . I already get like that my whole upbringing. I don’t want to feel like I’m in a place I don’t belong to. I’d rather just not be there
@wanderandwonder121
@wanderandwonder121 2 года назад
@@allisoneames8634 Thank you for being so honest and answering my question. You're right, belonging is very important, and I am really glad you have a family now where you do feel you have an important place. Thank you for sharing a lot of your story, it is really meaningful. I think for me, belonging doesn't have to mean I agree 100% with someone or have the same experiences or perspectives but is about love and compassion we show each other. My husband and I are from very different cultures which heavily shapes our worldviews, but we also share our religion which means we are in agreement about the main thing that shapes our perspective despite that often working out differently based on our culture. We both agree that God loves us and others and wants us to love Him and others too. So when our cultures clash, we try to understand each other and love each other in our differences, because that love is one of our main priorities. That is all just meant to be an example of how I feel belonging even when I'm not fully in agreement with someone or feel fully understood by them. You and your partner probably also have many worldview differences but agree about your priorities - like for your son - and maybe you also feel that tension of difference and belonging? Sorry for this long comment - I understand if you don't read it haha! I hope you're having a really wonderful day and that you and your family are well. You're awesome, Allison!

Day care workers make minimum wage here, but babysitters and nannies can make a lot. I have to pay $20-$25 an hour for a babysitter for just our youngest kids. That's the going rate, with the lower end being just a teenager. If our older kids watched their siblings, we paid them $20/hr, unless we were doing stuff which benefitted them as well, like food shopping, and then we had them just help.

I grew up LDS (no longer a believer) and I was curious what your thoughts were on the LDS church when you were in the order and also currently now that you are out. I cannot imagine many ex-FLDS or Kingston convert to LDS afterwards. Although the LDS church is not as extreme there are still some obvious similarities that are hard to miss. Thanks!
@allisoneames8634
@allisoneames8634 2 года назад
I love this question! I actually investigated the LDS church after leaving. I went to church every Sunday for a couple of months. At first, I really loved it. I loved the community and I genuinely loved listening to the talks in church. It was such a breath of fresh air being apart of a church where Jesus Christ and love was the number one thing. After a while though, the similarities between the LDS and the order were too much. I didn’t like the division between men and women. And after realizing I disliked that, it didn’t take long to find a bunch of other disagreements. In the order, we actually used the Book of Mormon as well but we kind of laughed at LDS members because “they thought they were gods church” when really the “order was”. So we knew we had similar teachings but we considered ourselves above them because we practiced polygamy and consecration.

Just a suggestion for Allison: It's a good idea to work as a nurses' aide (CNA) or as a PCT for a hospital. This'll give you experience doing tasks such as checking blood sugars and taking blood. A lot of hospitals will pay for at least part of their employees' nursing school and nursing schools like students who've worked as CNAs and PCTs. I have to disagree with Allison about the degree of a nurse's responsibility for patient care and outcome. Nurses no longer just work under a doctor direction; they are now part of a collaborative team and have a lot of input into patient care. Because a hospital nurse spends a lot of time at the bedside, their observations and critical thinking skills can save people's lives. Oftentimes, a doctor will only see a patient once each day but a nurse will see a patient at least hourly. Nowadays, there are many opportunities for nurses outside of hospitals. Of course, nurses work at hospitals and doctors' offices but they also work as case managers, educators, administrators, patient educators, etc.. I would suggest working on a med/surg floor for your first two years to give you a basic understanding of nursing care and critical thinking related to nursing. After that, the world is open to you. All sorts of companies hire nurses to do things like educate patients about their health telephonically. Good luck with your nursing career!

40:53 Amanda & Allison, I don't know if you will even see/notice this, but given your interest both in faith and the afterlife, you ladies should read "The Great Divorce" by CS Lewis. He reveals in the preface to the book that it is a work of fiction, but I honestly think it is the only description of heaven and hell that has ever made logical sense to me. It is a quick read, less than 200 pages, yet it provokes such profound thought for me every time I read it. And if you are still struggling with trying to define your beliefs, CS Lewis' theological writings ("Mere Christianity, Surprised by Joy, The Four Loves" you really can't go wrong, all of his theological essays/books are just wonderful!) are a really good place to explore what it really means to be a Christian, what is really faith, and what is just the worldly trappings we try to attach to faith. You are both so brave, and have had to be so strong. Know that there are people all over the world that have both benefited from your stories, and genuinely wish you every joy in life. ❤

I am a Reform Jew. We follow the Old Testament which we call the Torah. It has played a big role in my life. I grew up going to my synagogue. I went to a Jewish Day school and Hebrew School. I learned Hebrew and Judaics which is Jewish studies class. I had my Bat Mitzvah at 12 years old which is normal for a girl. It’s either 12 or 13 years old for Bat Mitzvah where girls become an adult in the Jewish community. Boys have their Bar Mitzvah at 13 years old. During the pandemic I have been doing Hebrew and Jewish adult education classes with my Rabbinical team on Zoom. I like that I can question my Rabbinical team about things. I do follow the modesty rules and dress code for services. I follow the rules that my Rabbinical staff has in place for my synagogue and the congregation. I love my Jewish faith!

I know of some amazing families who became a "host home" through holding out help for my friends/family that had left the order and FLDS. You are so sweet❤️ we need more people like you on this Earth 💕 thankyou for caring

Super interesting discussion about spirituality / religion / philosophy! Organized religious institutions are so polluted and hypocritical. Personally, my faith is just: Christ. I don't usually call myself a "Christian" because that word has been corrupted so much. I just love Christ and we live life together. I agree there is definitely some kind of continuation of life after our Earth-body dies!

Omg so my mom told me that when she went to synagogue with my dad, there wasn't anything that was off-putting to her. I told that to someone once and they were horrified at how low her bar was... But to me, it was an extremely high bar! I feel like you guys could understand my mom's perspective haha.

For people who are interested in medical science but are uncomfortable with blood or botching a surgery: Medical scientist exist. It may require a lot of difficult school, but most related PhD programs pay you a living stipend. Also, lab techs and people who run medical instruments (e.g. MRI techs) are important parts of the medical community but do not require nearly as much school.

Non denominational Christian here. 🙋🏼‍♀️ I believe everyone should have their own personal relationship with Christ, whatever that looks like. You don't have to go to church if you don't want. (I go maybe 2-3x a yr randomly) Although every now n then when I do go it does feel good. I lean more toward the new testament than the old as far as beliefs. Easy summery: just be a good, kind, and accepting person to all you meet. Jesus loves EVERYONE and died for all our sins, so take this life and do all and the best you can with it. Everyone sins, just try not to repeat bad behaviors. And counseling! Everyone should go to counseling, it's so therapeutic!

@@TheAmandaRaeGrant Right! Idk how some religions beliefs just sort of stop at the old testament, they preach like the NEW one just doesn't exist. So bizarre. Hope you have an amazing Easter!

Do people in The Order think they are Christian?
@tammyboss91

I think that, we do often choose to reincarnate, but I don’t believe we have to. I think that we are all God, and that God knew everything, but knowing and experiencing everything is two different things, so he split himself into all of us and the universe to experience himself or herself through us and everything, and I think that what ever we believe after we die is what we experience until we choose to believe something else.😊

Great video! Life has so much to offer and is ever changing. I was raised Catholic and I have differing views from that religion so I am Christian as well but don’t go to church. You need to check out Matt Fraser on Facebook he’s a psychic so cool! Yes he talks about souls and the after life love his videos! He explains it and yes they come and go he has a video today on intuition great video explaining.

If you want to ask me anything about anything...im older woman. Traveled. Exspences are many. I believe you thoughs words and actions shape your reality. What you think about most you bring to your self..wben we die. Well we are reincarnated. There are thousands of children that remember a past life. Parents names where they lived ..how they died. Many details that has been scientificly research..its not like we could get this right in one life time ...the bad thing that happen bring about something..nothing happens by mistake..

It’s interesting watching these and seeing how you feel about religion after leaving a cult. It’s warming that you’re both still open to religion. I an a christian. And i feel like christianity is one of the best religions because we believe and serve a God who is loving and forgiving. I think cults and things like that taint the image of God because they do all these terrible things under this false pretenses of “This is what God wants”. I would just say to you both. Just start with a prayer life. God is so real and so good and if you talk to him he will and listen and he will answer. He’ll guide you into the right church home or community. Also my belief is that there is a heaven and hell and that we do go to either of those places when we die

I don’t think you can call yourself Christian if you believe in reincarnation. To me it sounds like you guys are searching for something. I’m currently going through the same thing. I know I’m Christian but I’m not sure on the religion I belong to is the right one. I get confused too. Love watching your videos. I came across them 2 days ago. @12:17, you know what would help you from being socially awkward? Stop referring to individuals that weren't in your cult as " outsiders". 1) We all have a story, some of our stories have been our own little personal hell just like yours, abuse comes from many angles. 2) you're not in a cult anymore, stop letting it define who you are. Only let it let you grow, from who you were.
@allisoneames8634
@allisoneames8634 2 года назад
I agree. Referring to people as outsiders would disconnect you from them. However, we don’t define the word “outsider” the same as everyone else. An “outsider” is someone who did no grow up in the order. That’s it. That’s just the lingo we use. One thing that I learned quick since leaving, is that no one is “normal”. Everyone does have a story.
