Oh yes, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, please. @JAMfam, I’ve noticed that you’ve been really digging what we old folks were playing on our turntables. Lordy, I miss those free and easy times. 🎨 annie in tn
Not a bad cut on their Fillmore East album. Just about any group Live at the Fillmore East with very few exceptions is going to be good. The place was legendary back in the day.
sends chills up my spine every..single..time. God Bless you Duane Allman.

ABB Live at Fillmore East= A GREAT LIVE ALBUM= Duane in his Pure & Natural element. With his Brother on lead vocals & Hammond B-3. Sharing guitar licks with Dickey Betts. And Berry, Butch & Jaimoe holding it all together. The darkness of tragedy takes at will, but it can't erase all the brightness that once was and will ALWAYS be remembered.
This is one of my all-time favs. To echo some of the other commenters, this is the real stuff, here. Comes from the heart, not from a machine. Welcome aboard, my young friend!
There are only a few bands that I consider the best of the best. The Brothers are one of the best!!! The likes will never be seen again. Sad today's music will never be the same!!!
It's crazy to realize these guys are all in their early to mid 20's here, it doesn't seem possible. There's a maturity in this music far beyond what you'd expect from 20-somethings.
JAM, you just hit on one of my favorite songs of all time--major props. No matter my mood--good or bad, happy or sad--this song lifted me up. Keep rocking' it.
a friend of mine(also in his mid-60s) said, "when I'm not sure what I want to listen to, I put on some Allman Brothers, and in a few minutes I'll say- that's exactly what I wanted to listen to"
Eurepedes noted that music is the echo of our memories. It is a human condition to have timeless pieces of music touch us in very personal ways, each to our own condition. The reach is simultaneously from the past, present and from our apprehension of the future.
You just heard the best guitar solo you will ever hear in your life.....you are choosing great music....This is big time performance stuff!...Remember the name...Duane Allman
Duane was original lead/slide with Dickie Betts on lead too. Duane passed in "71 from a cycle accident and various great guitarists from Warren Haynes to Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring played with them. I was lucky enough to see them about 25 times.
First time I've listened to this in 45 years (and not stoned). Thanks for reminding me of this. You are rapidly achieving musical enlightenment. Stay well.
It's such a joy to see young bro's discover the great music that I grew up listening to. Yes I love Motown and other great black musicians, but there was so much great music out there. Keep exploring music of the past.
Hey, I'm white (pinkish-beige actually) and I know the roots of all the great rock n roll came from R&B. Good music is good music, and we know it when we hear it. Motown, Muscle Shoals, Nashville, SFO, LA, or even GB. Long live the 1970's!
"In memory of Elizabeth Reed" is one of my favorites and you will not be disappointed. But also "Little Wing" by Derek and the Dominos is unbelievable and Dwayne Allman is playing with Eric Clapton please do yourself a favor and give it a try.
Oh man, LF and the late great Lowell George. Fired from Zappa/Mothers of Invention (drug use?) and goes on to make a genre of music all his own. Even the late 1980's comeback LP "Let It Roll" was a gem. LF, revered to this day by those with taste.
Oh how I love this one, you should hear my pitiful attempt to sing it. Molly Hatchet, another band for you to check out, does this song too, I don't know which band wrote it. Their version is also very good. This is music that doesn't leave you alone. It will be whizing through your brain at work, keeping awake at night.
....and Gregg's early-20s voice sounds like a 60 y/o grizzled bluesman. Hell, the entire band were just babies, but they were laying down a groove like their seasoned idols. Simply badass! What else can be said about the ABB?!
If you liked Hey Jude, you would love The Allman Brothers band "Not my cross to bare! Gregg Allman was only 21 or 22 years old when he wrote that song. One of the most soulful songs of the Allman Brothers. You would love it. I'm sure of it!
I saw the Watkins Glen poster behind you, as the pictures went by...I was at that...16 years old...Crazy couple of days!...Don't even remember how I got home...Lol!
Do both of yourselves the biggest thing for yourselves today listen/add Allman Brothers Dreams at Fillmore West it’s a fairly newly released show from Jan ‘71 This studio version is a early version with Duane, they were a live band and the Fillmore West version will take you away
I do like both this version (in 3/4 time), and the Molly Hatchet remake version (4/4 time), but actually heard the remake long before this. The ABB were musical gold.
While you’re visiting Southern Rock check out Wet Willie. Peers of AB from Mobile AL, moved to Macon and signed with Capricorn Visit their live “Macon Hambone Blues” for some funky energy.
Glad to see you react to this, such an iconic song, and appreciate it so much. If you would like to hear a cover of this maybe 10 or so years after it's release, check out the Molly Hatchet version. 3 lead guitar attack guaranteed not to disappoint! Love all your reactions, keep going man, there id so much more to experience! Not sure how you keep track of your recommendations, but you can be sure, if I recommend a song, or band, it will be a good one. No lame stuff from me! lol I been rockin" a few years, music is a part of my life EVERY day, shoot, I have 185 GB of music on an SD card in my daily driver alone! 355 GB in my main music folder, which includes some duplicate files lossless formats that the vehicle will not play. That is why I watch reactors like YOU, to see what you think of the music that I love! Keep travelling down that lane man, so much more for you to discover!
Actually, three guitarists! Duane on base, Dickey Betts and Barry Oakley on lead. I don't think you have heard one of Dickies compositions yet, as a guitarist you will want to check him out too.
I saw these guys 4x in concert. 3 times before Duane died. In concert they would do this cut for close to 30 minutes. They were some group. Try "Whipping Post" from the Live At The Fillmore East album. Easily their best recorded version.
Yes! I’ll take credit for this, since I suggested it several weeks ago lol Duane’s solo is sublime, isn’t it? Starts out with standard picking, then shifts to slide, with the whole band percolating along underneath. Great choice! There are so many more Allman tunes to listen to: Whipping Post, Elizabeth Reed, Blue Sky, and on and on and on ...
And my other nomination for the "Spend a week with this album" candidate. Just it, nothing else, for a week. And no mention of psilosybin OR mescaline.
Molly Hatchet did a harder edged version of this song that was awesome ...you should check it out it was also done nicely by Buddy Miles Jazzy version.
Duane was the only lead guitar on the album version. Dickey Betts wasn't very comfortable in the studio at that point, so all of the solos on that album are Duane. In concert, Dickey had a solo, but Duane usually had two solos, one standard, one on slide. Perhaps THE monumental version with Duane was 9/19/71 at SUNY Stonybrook just over a month before Duane died. It's 19 min of soaring guitar work. Probably not on youtube, but available on Amazon, a great 2 cd set to familiarize yourself with what they sounded like at a normal concert in the Duane era.
David Ryder , but IMHO the Dead were much better with just Billy drumming (71-74). More aggressive drumming and added space for the rest of the band to operate.
Dual lead guitar players Duane Allman Dickey Betts greatest band ever nobody did music like the Allman Brothers Band do yourself a favor bone up on the Allman Brothers like through Wikipedia knowledge is power especially when it comes to the Allman Brothers Band... do yourself a favor listen to the full album at the Fillmore East but gets a deluxe edition which will give you three quarters of the eat a peach album All Live at the Fillmore it'll blow you away
