The great thing about the first Matrix is that it takes those philosophical concepts and wraps them up in a cool generally accessible action film. The issue with the next two is that it falls so far down the philosophical rabbit hole that it requires the audience to read those books as well.
That is why I love those movies just as much as the first, I found the philosophy part miles more interesting than bullet time (that shit got old quick with every movie and game post the matrix abusing the fuck out of it). Merovingian rambling about causality makes my dick hard every time.
The matrix, including its aesthetics, philosophical implications, and theoretical physics were directly ripped from Grant Morrisons "The invisibles" His lawyers even told Morrison to sue since he would have easily won, but Morrison didn't sure because he liked the movie
Wish I could thumbs up this multiple times, everyone says the matrix was chiefly influenced by Ghost in the shell and anime, maybe Simulacra and Simulation, but anyone that knows about The invisibles knows that it is the real inspiration. It's too bad they didn't rip off my favourite thing from The invisibles, the backstory of the random guard that gets killed, humanizing a type of character that is always dehumanized, the cannon fodder baddie, should have happened in the lobby scene in the first Matrix, I choose the dude just reading his newspaper before getting an entire magazine emptied in his face out of fucking nowhere.
@@NorHeadHunter Among artists it often agreed that the best ones steal. To the point where certain concepts, scenes or lines are copied to the letter. In times long past that was actually the norm. Because using someone else's idea in a work of art which you're putting your own soul into was (and sometimes still is) seen as the highest praise. It means that the other artist has read/heard/seen your art, liked it, understood the idea, philosophy and concept, and made it their own so that more people could be influenced by it. For the original artist, it means that they have left their mark on someone. That their art is more than just temporary entertainment.
They never leave the matrix in the movies. The guy loosely explains it in the architect scene. But it is more prevalent in the part where neo uses his powers outside the matrix, proving they are still in the machine. The second layer is just for the people who see though the first layer so that they stay trapped.
Wasn’t the whole point of it to let the viewer guess if the were still in the machine or if „the chosen one“ just means that the world is modeled after one human and what he expects to make it realistic. That is why he has these powers but in the „real world“ he is still part of the machine/a high level program and that is why he has some control.
i always assumed it was more like running a virtual machine, those who became aware found it easier to build a second layer that protects them from tracking and control which they pull others into than it was to locate each person and pull them out of the simulation
The Matrix was created when Skynet became self aware and killed off most Humans. Until Skynet won and put all remaining Humans in a computer generated reality.
I actually know where Laurence went to acting school and I've seen the training the actors go through to learn how to analyze and understand difficult material. I'm not surprised he found it so easy compared to what he went through in college.
@Hunter Anderson not frivolous at all... if there was a shot of the rolling stones, sting, lenny kravitz and rod stewart and someone said "omg the entire rolling stones band is there!" you'd point out how wrong they were, yeah....
@@flamebreaker7318 How about making ten minutes worth of content, instead of trying to stretch out a 2 minute trivia fact in to a 10 minute video. What, I'm supposed to jerk this guy off because it's so dreadful he has to make ten minutes worth of content somehow? Jesus thousands of other channels do the same ten minute video but with actual ten minutes off information instead of 8 minutes of filler.
"Scary Movie 3 was the best one..." uuuuuuuuh it must be a British thing. The first 2 movies were the best. After 2 the series became waaaay too slapstick and PG-13.
I'm with Morpheus, it really wasn't that hard of a philisophical thing to understand. And I didn't read 3 massive textbooks about philosophy first. I watched all three movies over a weekend in college, probably ten years after they came out, went in under the impression that it made no sense. I came out going "huh? I understood that."
draco18s It's not just the movies and the script, they also had to read the Matrix's insperation and some philosophy books and/or science theories or something like that, and then were tested on the deeper meaning of the script and possibly the inspiration. So I believe that was the difficult part.
@@joshthebrawler Nah, Larry was pretty specific about "everyone on their first reading of the script" and since they had to pass all those tests before being allowed to see the script... I'm betting they expected WAY more out of the story than what was shoehorned into the first movie and were confused that it incorporated practically 2% of what they were ordered to learn before hand. It'd be like having to read a 40 page document and given a 12 question multiple choice test, but the ass-hat who wrote the answer key didn't bother to randomize the answers' order and the whole test is just "mark B for points".
That just reeks of intellectual insecurity, doesn´t it? Making people take tests on the meaning of your scripts. And the extent of that in the movie is a slap in the face obvious, pretentious rant by someone who´s "so deep" because they copied something from a book without understanding it and think they´re smart because there´s "meaning".
That's basically the Wachowskis in a nutshell. I used to think their movies and the Matrix was deep, then I took a 200-level philosphy class, realized exactly how full o'shit they are, and how ridiculous people sound when they act like Matrix is deep. Mile wide, inch deep, that.
@@kennethmory1803 It was Plato's Allegory of The Cave (damn this sounds so stupid in English) piece by piece. It looks also a lot like the concept of Dark City, a movie released just a year before Matrix! There is allways a reality behind the perceived reality. Humankind is imprisoned in the cave and held in chains but they can't see it. It's said that Platon didn't lived where Computer simuations were known. I'm pretty sure he would have asked if there realy is more than the device that runs the simulation.
Gotta admit that I didn't really understand the philosophy of the matrix trilogy until it was brought up to me. Then and only then did it make sense to me, otherwise it was just a weirdly themed action movie to me. As far as the scary movie franchise, I have to agree with you Carl with a K, scary movie 3 is my favorite one as well
Cal H Go and watch their first videos the whole point was that nobody was watching them except for like ten people so they would find ways of making it sound as ridicules as possible I was just pointing out that they started gaining subs after they stopped wich shows that not saying it at all is better than pissing your fans off every video
Obligatory Negative Comment Of The Day: I started watching Horrible Histories, as suggested in a past episode, and it's amazing, thank you for the recommendation.
not that it's a sky high bar, but yes it is. My favorite bit in SM1(and it's because it's the most "Naked Gun-y" is where the cop is showing Cindy pictures and it's all of him in a speedo
12:40 your favorite quote/scene for Scary Movie 3. I just realized I never saw it and that clip you showed, made me laugh like crazy, so I'm off to see Scary Movie 3 now.
I honestly don't understand why this channel only has 33k subs it deserves so much more it's easily my favorite youtube channel and I discovered it quite recently I hope it will get a lot more in the future, best of luck to you lot.
Holy crap this channel is snowballing! I was getting worried when you were on a few thousand subs for months. Glad to see it's working out through your determination and hard work, and highly entertaining videos, keep it up!
i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that the actual inspiration for the matrix was the original ghost in the shell and the wanted to make a western version of it and that's how they got the idea for it in the first place (cant bother to look for the source rn)
5:17 “Lawrence Fishburn is not a fuckin extra” sounds like something Samuel L Jackson would say casually, and something Mr.Fishburn would say if someone really pissed him off 😂😂😂
Scary Movie: -"Hey Doofy, smell my finger!" -"What's that?" -"that's the smell of when you become a man!" -"Hey, smell my finger!" -"Eww, wtf is that?" -"My ass"
A friend of mine wrote over 50 pages of analysis on the second Matrix film and a philosophy Within. He wrote a longer one on the architect speech. I just conceded and agreed to call the second film brilliant.
What a cracking and funny channel you have there. Stumbled on it via the MK video and I'm stuck in a binging loop ever since. XD Also, the philosopher's name sounds like : BO-DRI-YAR in French. Cheers! You also convinced me to finally watch John Wick... holy shit that was a cool flick.
Maybe cuz I'm black but I completely disagree with your opinion about scary movie .Scary Movie one is the best of the franchise followed by a Scary Movie 2 but the 3rd Scary movie, I believe is complete s***.
Whats on my Mind? 🤭🤭 Really don't know what you're trying to get at, but "cuz I'm black", was me informing others of where some of my opinion derived from. Does it mean other black people share the same opinion ? No. Do I feel that it affects MY opinion? Yes. Was I trying to change other people's opinion of the Peace? No. Do I give a f*** if it changes your opinion? f*** no, it's the Internet, no one of importance cares. Hope this clears things up for you.🤙🏿
well as we are all for equality and not segregating based on colour or race then I can only assume your "maybe cuz i'm black" comment is in fact a racist comment :) See you can't have it both ways. You would be the first to kick up if a white guy said "maybe because i am white" i am sure.
I know this is an older video but thank you so much for putting modern pictures of the Wachowski sisters and being respectful of trans and lgbt people in general. It really means a lot to me personally that the fact fiend people care enough to put out some basic respect.
I really don't know what's sadder, that only one actor had enough grasp of the material to show basic competency in it, or that the directors even felt they had to go into such detail over such basic concepts every intro to philosophy student gets, like the problem of solipsism, theory of mind, and the nature of knowledge. I really like the idea of Keanu scratching his head, chimp like, at the concepts the allegory of the cave is trying to illustrate though.
Mostlyharmless1985 ok, considering a lot of people have issues with philosophy in the Matrix there's one of three things going on here 1: you don't see any of these themes in the Matrix 2: you're a philosophy major who doesn't get that everyone else isn't a philosophy major 3: you just belong on /r/iamverysmart
To address your points: 1. Problem of solipsism. How do you know if you are a brain in a vat? Could the entirety of your existence be an elaborate simulation meant to fool you into thinking any external stimuli is actual? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zQ1_IbFFbzA.html Theory of mind: How would you consider and interact with a sentient machine? Would they see you the same way you see them? Would you even recognize them as another mind? Would they recognize you as another mind or a resource to be exploited? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JrBdYmStZJ4.html Nature of knowledge: Is knowing something enough to make it so, or is it such that your perception is the reality? Can your perception of reality take effect in reality proper, or tying back to the question of solipsism, can you perceive reality in such a way that your perception *becomes* the reality? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uAXtO5dMqEI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BHGIGwiMK6c.html So there's one. 2. No, i'm not a philosophy major, the Matrix is not complex in it's philosophical nature, it has it's own internal answers to the questions it asks as to the nature of reality. It literally asks these questions then immediately answer them. 3. I'm not a smug enough cunt to belong on /r/iamverysmart The Matix's philosophy isn't complicated to grasp, or understand. It would not require a PHI1101 crash course to effectively act in it.
Mostlyharmless1985 alright, those are all really effective answers that were done in a good job. A+ for not just calling me a fag and not taking a week to respond. And yeah, those are all pretty easy concepts. Don't get me wrong, the answers can be complex but the original idea or question is relatively simple. Not everyone gets these ideas, everyone is better at different things, teach a fish to climb I tree and all that.
Let's just bask in the light of a positive youtube interaction, and also giggle while we imagine Keanu repeating for the 30th time "so, wait... where exactly is this cave? Cause it's not right that these guys are locked up, we should do somthing about that." and being patiently explained to by Lawrence that the cave isn't actually real.
My mom and I were watching something on TV one day and during the ads my brother changed the channel to the scary movie 3, we started telling him to go back to what we were watching and he was saying "no no no just wait, this movie is really funny, if you don't laugh in 2 minutes I'll change it back" he barely said that and the rap scene cuts to Simon Cowell, we just started laughing hysterically.
OK she didn't win lawsuit (btw I said I believe whole time not I know for fact =) I liked your post but ever read the 3rd eye from 1981? Copyrighted and it is interesting to say the least. Here is a review of book years ago "I do read the obvious connections that can be seen in the Matrix and Terminator movies".
Thank you very much for that knowledge I appreciate it. The court papers and e-mails to studio are in the new revision of her book =) The "one" who stops the machines from causing nuclear disaster. Story is like Bible, Conspiracy Theories, Matrix and Terminator all in one. It isn't a great read only 30 pages but from 1981 and these movies that came out after, they should have gave her something out of court IMO.
+Tevo77777 Extraterrestrials are a fairly old antagonist going back into the late 19th century at least where the idea that something other than us could exist "out there" was well established. But yeah the idea that computers or machines could become the antagonist is a much more recent device late 20th century at least though there were some musings on the possibility such a thing could occur before that they took some time to enter the public eye. Early programmable universal computers were developed for wartime use after all.
Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Goonies, Alien, The Matrix, BTTF, Scary Movie and most of the films made fun of, in Scary Movie were written by one guy. Cowboy Bebop, Firefly, Futurama, Invader Zim, Space Dandy and The Tick Ect. have many unfinished episodes and some have complete seasons are ready written up. Now it's over and he doesn't want to continue with the entertainment industry anymore.
i think they explained it somewhere that. The bridge of the glasses, that bit where it pinches on your nose was spring articulated and a serious size clamp .
Scary Movie 3 was definitely the best Scary Movie, in fact its the only Scary Movie I enjoy. But I enjoy it a lot, and Leslie Nielsen really does steal that movie, the scene where he says that we're not so different after all about the aliens, after they just peed out their finger, and then he does it too, I'm cracking up just thinking about it. So great, think I'm gonna go watch it again now.
It's surreal to find someone who loves Scary Movie 3 so religiously as I do. Coincidentally, The Matrix is my favourite movie! Congrats on seemingly doubling your subs since I last looked.
Swooping shots with real stuff hanging in mid air in The Matrix were done with a rig of a big number of cameras who took a photo at the same time, then they were stitched together. I Subbed in the last few days.
I'm with Larry on this one, but then I also got Donnie Darko on the first viewing too. I think it may be that many people seem uncomfortable quantifying and reflecting on things outside of conformation bias and their world views. As a result we get movies like Inception which repeatedly push their main premise, until viewers have no choice but to get it.
Oy! I had a guy named Flugge that has a family of custom lens crafters and frame engineers. The morpheus glasses are a silver spring hinge made in the 1800s. Larry wore one of only a few pairs made during the movie. It's believed that no1 alive can recreate the complex silver hinge.
My interpretation of the Matrix is that everybody, in their youth, is full of dreams and ambitions, but eventually, succumb to and get corrupted by the Powers That Be, becoming more and more like Agent Smith over time, trading individual freedom for a more restrictive "reality". Neo, in his case, "woke up" with the realization that what he believed to be "reality" was, in fact, a product of the collective and that he, as an individual, was living a lie, which eventually lead him to his true potential. In other words, it's about the constant war between the individual and the collective.
That's not so much an interpretation, that's actually the simulation we live in. Pre-school kids are still full of dreams, ambitions, curiosity. They explore the world and they constantly ask questions. But when they're about to finish school, most of that is gone and the only question that is important is: "Will that be in the test?" Also, "waking up" doesn't really do anything. Just look at neo, he "woke up" and learned the truth about the matrix, he "woke up" again when he learned that the prophecy of the one is false. Then he "woke up" a third and last time when he realized, that the only way to make a difference is to succumb to the false prophecy and to accept the simulated role of "the one". Neo and all the others might have "woken up", but they never left the simulation, even all the people outside the matrix. In fact, the matrix, as a digital simulation, is just one part of the entire simulation, which we most commonly refer to as: The System!
Dude's, you guys just have me in bits every day. I would love to see a video on The Airplane movies, not sure if you've done any Leslie Neilson centered videos yet? (Okay, he's in Scary Movie 3). But it seems like Karl has the kind of humour that would love those hilarious and yet ridiculousy silly movies. Amazing work guys, I look forward to your next vid's all the time.
