This is the first half of my stay at Linn Run State Park. I spent two nights alone in a rustic cabin. The first day I went for a six mile hike on two different trails, passed some historic ruins, and spent the evening settling in, reading, and cooking some delicious food. I hope you guys will come with me on this one, as I used to do a lot more of this sort of thing, and would really like to make time for it again now that I can bring you guys along for the ride. Enjoy!

Hey! I’m glad somebody got the reference. Wonder what happen to him? I thought he was one of the best. Didn’t take himself too serious. Realized bushcraft was playing in the woods and had fun with it.

I came for the axes but stayed for the steak (and the view) Great video. I've been planning a solo backcountry camping trip for later this year. Pack some gear and head out on my own. Can't wait

Thanks Joey, the next vid has the best views. It was actually quite a dangerous hike because the access road was closed to due really bad ice storms. I hope to get the next one up by the end of the week.

Did I see soap in the cast iron frying pan? Geez... the old timers are frowning. 😉 Looks like a great place to relax Kevin! I've been itching to get into the mountains but there has been a lot of ice. The forest ranges had to do a rope rescue this past week at one of the places I go to hike. A young woman slipped on the ice and slide a significant distance down the side of the mountain. She was lucky... a few minor bumps and bruises but because of the ice she couldn't get out of there. I did that once and don't care to repeat it--slide about 130 feet and lost about 65 feet in elevation (measured a few weeks later when the ice and snow melted off). I was beat up, alone, and in a place no one could see me from a trail. I flew over a ledge at one point and careened off trees and rocks. It took me a long time to regain my feet and stagger out of the woods. If things went a little differently I could have met my demise that day. For me life is a learning experience so I can wait a few more weeks. 😉

It was actually very dangerous for me to be there. You’ll see in the video when I hike higher in elevation. The access roads are closed because the road is covered in two inches of solid ice, and I hike 10 miles to one of the most dangerous spots in any weather. It was actually kind of stupid in hindsight, but I took precautions and didn’t do anything I was certain I couldn’t do, but still...if I’d have fallen it would probably have been a week before I saw anyone. And yes, fish friendly soap lol.

@@KevinsDisobedience I think it's safe to say that all my best adventures included risk... I like to think of it as calculated risk! I've got IceBug spiked boots and ice crampons for known icy conditions. However, it's those times I don't have them with me that things seem to go sideways. I should probably get some YakTrax and leave them in my pack in the winter months... Regarding the soap, I was more worried about the cast iron than the fish... soap tends to ruin the seasoning and it itself seasons the cast iron with tastes that don't enhance food. That said, a little mild soap generally won't hurt anything if you oil it afterwards. Me personally, I avoid it all together. Old cast iron pans with smooth seasoned surfaces are like non-stick cookware. The newer, pre-seasoned, cast iron (e.g, Lodge) isn't smooth... it's got a surface that seems like it was media blasted but I've read that it's because it's not allowed to slowly cool in the sand mold. An article I found supports that notion www.phase-trans.msm.cam.ac.uk/2001/adi/cast.iron.html. The cookware manufacturers tout that the rough surface is better as it holds the oils and the pans season faster. I see that as marketing spin to explain away a lower cost manufacturing process--I find it enhances sticking more than anything! No amount of seasoning is going to smooth and level the surface of the new stuff (post 1950s). Give me an old pan that is smooth and well seasoned and I'm much happier. 😃 Cast iron is interesting stuff. My father was a journeyman tool and die maker and he told me that way back manufacturers of precision machined cast iron used to leave the castings lay outside for a year or more to normalize them before machining. That doesn't happen any more... My readings on filing and scraping cast iron mention removing the hard scale via pickling prior to filing. It occurs to me that you, as a tool guy, may find Nicholson's "A Treatise on Files" interesting. There is a wealth of information in the book... Though I learned a lot from my father I found that my draw filing results were dramatically better after reading the section on it in Nicholson. I have a reprint from the Early American Industries Association but it's available on Google Books and/or Gutenberg.

You should get a lil book for the mushrooms in your area, adds a lil pazazz to the hike when you find a topping for your steak out there. Spring is gonna be perfect for it!

I’ve got two. One on PA mushrooms and one on mushrooms in general. These were criminni mushrooms. I’m just fascinated by fungi, but right now everything seems to be dormant except the ever present turkey tail, which manage to remain in some form all year long. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

It fantastic all year around tbh. Until last year, my wife and I stayed in one of the cabins (there are 10 total) every year for our anniversary, and we’d typically get up there for a day hike once in every season, but now she’s says she ain’t having it without running water lol. There is a common bath house, but she don’t like it. She’s afraid to go over there herself, so I have to go with her. But yeah, it’s gorgeous. I’d a like to get up there late April or early May before it gets too buggy and muggy. I love being alone, but it’s really fun with a couple of mates.

Really is. I feel refreshed as soon as I pull in between those two hills. It’s only an hours drive from our place, but the landscape is very different. Trees are taller, hills are bigger, streams run fuller. It’s quieter. Basically more of everything I love about where I’m from. Thanks as always for watching and commenting.

Take care brother! Take as much time as you can to heal up! Tennis elbow is such a pain in the ass! I got it from working out to much and stopped me from doing most things. What helped me was stretching my top muscles on my forearm because that big muscle runs all the way to your elbow. I stretched a lot and rested my arm and its gone completely.
@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 3 года назад
Thanks for the concern. It’s the first time I’ve dealt with anything like this. I mean, I’m always dealing with some pain or another from work, but nothing crippling like this.
@Fogyt121
@Fogyt121 3 года назад
Lovely spot. As far as the tennis elbows-keep moving them, but don't do too drastic stuff. It needs some movement in the elbows to get the blood flowing and speed up the process. I had a similar issue from running an angle grinder for several hours for three days-my thumbs and areas of the skin on the forearm went numb and I had elbow pain. I never stopped moving my arms and everything got fixed in about four days.

It is a great spot. You’ll see just how lovely in the next vid when I got deeper into the park. And fortunately I couldn’t stop doing stuff if my arms fell off. It’s just not me. But finishing drywall is out for a bit.

Did you say filet mignon? I hope you don't attract Wendigos 😉 I approve the Cafe Bustelo, too! Wearing the compression bands on your forearms helps with pain. Also only pick things up with your palm supinated so the extensors aren't working.
@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 3 года назад
Yeah I may get some steak haters. I cut in in half so it would cook faster, and I prefer it closer to well-done. But let haters hate. My brother turned me on to the Mexican coffee. It’s good. And I did actually by compression bands, and they do help. I just worry I’ll push too hard because I don’t notice the pain as much. Anyway, thanks for the advice and as always for commenting.

Rest up buddy nothing worse than not being able to to do what you want to do but it affords us the opportunity to catch up on outher things like reading that book we bought and never felt we had time to read after a full work day and fully appreciate its wisdom and life experience of the author stay safe and recuperate Kevin and if you have any spare stake throw it my way across the pond 😉😂

Have you ever came across something you wish you didn’t while on your hikes?
@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 3 года назад
What a great question. And the easy answer is people. When I’m in the woods I’d rather not run into other people lol. But in all seriousness, I found pot plants growing in a state park when mushroom hunting and wished I hadn’t. I just turned around and got out of there, but if I had come at the wrong time that could have been trouble. This was years ago when marijuana was still treated like any other drug.
