My first proper attempt at Alpe du Zwift with a 60 min target and using my brand new ROCKER plate with my Wahoo Kickr Bike.
As a new rider to ZWIFT, and at 100kg, it will need about 320 watts all the way - NOT EASY!
For more information on the awesome rocker plate, complete with WHEELS to move your bike around the pain cave, check out Tim Churchill at Churchill Woodcraft on Facebook.

Kudos to you. I'm similar, started Zwift in Oct; started cycling back in March weighing 96+kg at 5'5". First time I done Alpe, I did it at 100% (go big or go home); big mistake.... Took me 1.5hrs grinding 60-70rpm with my 30-34 setup. If you want more fun, join a team and race TTTs with em! Since starting, I've dropped to 84kg with the motivation to just keep spinning; just like your "come on" screams. Keep up the cracking work!

You've just described exactly what happened to me on my first alpe last month. Similar story in terms of cycling beginner but managed 59min 55 after seeing 60mins 20 predicted. I think I also fell off the bike similarly. Stellar effort!

Absolutely class. Both useful, interesting but also very human. Not many people are prepared to push themselves that hard, and it's that kind of determination that takes you 'above average' and well beyond. The dismount had me creased I must admit. If Zwift do an annual award for 'best youtube moments' that has to be in the top 10. Sheer quality entertainment. Cheers man!

Couldn't be much more different to you in almost every respect (cyclist only, weedy 67kg flyweight with no muscle, no kids, minimal budget) but really enjoying your earnest and open approach to indoor cycle training as a relative newcomer, great stuff!

Would have to disagree with the ‘gimmick’ comment in regards the climb element of the bike. When it creates the 8-15% gradients at 100% level on zwift its creating the same gradient as it would IRL going up Alpe d’Huez. With the groupset i use i have to do the alpe out of the saddle for about 50% to 60% of the time due to this , just like i would if i rode it IRL , and different muscle groups are being used at these gradients when out of the saddle , so highly beneficial to cyclists who go climbing IRL. People will say watts are watts which is true but training at different gradients and lower cadences due to gradients has massively helped me IRL climbing hills. If you’re just going to cycle flat courses then its not an issue.

So your videos inspired me to try and do this. Two months ago I started training for this. Today was my first attempt. Based on how training felt I really really didn’t think I could do. But I was wrong! Crushed it! 56:40 on first try! I am also a big rider like you. I was 220lbs a few months ago. Got down to 200lbs just so I could do this. Now if only I could run like you. I have a video of it on twitch if interested, I’m colwem.

Great video Mark, it's 10th December 2021 and I've just watched your video - went up the Alpe myself this morning, smashed my PB with a new PB of 43:55, the reason I give my time is to assure you that everyone (irrespective of 'ability' / fitness) suffers up that interminable monster if you're going anywhere near your PB time. I'm also a good 25kg lighter than you - a huge advantage. It's a tough slog and I have huge respect for anyone who pushes themselves up that bastard. Your dismount after the finish line was laugh out loud funny (in a 'I know that feeling' way) Top tip - keep on pedaling after the line enjoy a luxurious 10 minute super-tuck on the way down, regain your composure and step off the bike once your HR settles and your will to live returns, really enjoying your videos , thanks !

Great video Mark. Very entertaining. Laughed my ass off at the epic dismount!! We purchased the Stages SB20 bike and started riding Zwift for the first time this fall. I'm amazed at how incredibly far indoor / virtual riding has come. I never imagined that I'd enjoy riding indoors as much as out. Absolutely love the Stages smartbike, but it's a heavy beast: super smooth to pedal, but also ultra stiff that results in some noticeable physical fatigue on the longer sessions. Two plus hours pedaling on it and you feel it. I've had a handful of 3 to 4 hour rides and they definitely beat you up as there is virtually no 'give' on the Stages bike. The Wahoo bike clearly has more 'flex'. And with the brilliant 'rocker' board that you've added, it seems like it's a major step in the right direction. It's amazing how much you can learn from others about various virtual smartbike setups and zwifting in general. Glad I found your page and videos. Keep up the great work!!

Great video again. Loving it haha. You’ll definitely do it sub 60 next time. Yep, there’s a badge if you do it under the hour. Plus, there are a set of wheels that you can only unlock when the roulette wheel spins every time you get to the top of the alp. It’s totally random. Took me 5 times to climb for it to land on the wheels! 🥵. The ironic thing is that they are special ‘lightweight’ wheels which means you’d climb faster when they are equipped haha. The rocker plate looks really good. Maybe the next investment for my kickr bike.

Great effort and entertainment! Tip for standing using the rocker plate. Use your arms to push the bike in the opposite direction of your pedalling leg (leaning left when right leg down). We do it naturally outside but on a rocker most people reverse and get less power... I think I saw you doing it both ways. Keep it up and crack that hour!

Great video, love the dismount 😂. Getting the correct rocking is not difficult but takes some active action from the rider. What you are experiencing as the unnatural movement is a well known affect for many new rocker users, when you tilt the bike in the wrong direction when pedalling. Happens when you are not “active” in the upper body, you really need to lean the bike in the opposite direction from the leg that is pushing down. So when your right leg goes down, you should be leaning the bike to the left. It’s exactly what you would do outside without the trainer, but since the trainer stands up by itself, many become passive in this regard and the trainer will rock in the wrong direction. You’ll wry soon get a hang of it!

Very entertaining with an emphasis on hilarity. Love it, haha. See if the board maker could add elastomers between the top panel and base. These could be at varying heights and durometer levels. It would give the ability to tune rocking, and give progressive resistance I think you're looking for. Keep it up Mark!
@Chader9

Not really needed, since you can adjust the rocker well with higher or lower pressure in the inflatable balls a the outer parts of the plate. This is standard practice for vibration mount rocker plates like this one. Additionally, moving the balls in or out from the pivot point can alter the feel to suit a range of preferences for overall feel.

Awesome effort! My observations: 1) The guy riding the Tron coloured bike may have ridden a lot of altitude on Zwift to get it, but does not know that your Tarmac Pro would have been a way better bike for climbing the Alpe. 2) I understand the desire to click 'save' as soon as possible, but if you keep riding slowly around the top (even after you fall off the bike and recover) your bike will hit the descent when you can get off for 10 minutes and it will continue down to accrue free XP points which help you to level up more quickly in the game.
