9:13 Rudy framing this seller as being angry and calling it a scam.... Nothing they said was emotionally charged, it was completely factual. The box selection didn't fit their desires and they wanted Kaladesh boxes that Rudy stated would be available, but in the end, were not. That's an entirely fair reason to cancel a subscription. It's a waste of money for that Patron. Rudy is making all these ex-Patrons out to be horrible people with unrealistic expectations. God forbid someone cancels their subscription by saying it's not enough of a benefit for them.... Unless a Patron is a dedicated investor buying a significant amount of boxes, they aren't even offsetting the Patron fees with their purchases, so for casual players it is absolutely a bad deal to take all around. That $79.99 price point only makes enough of a difference when buying in bulk.
While I agree Rudy is reading too much into some of these, you do need to acknowledge he did say many of these patrons sent him PMs. This just shows the patreon account removal notices. He is only showing half the story. Conveniently, it is the most vague part of the story that he can use to mold into whatever the fuck message he wants though, soooo....yeah. If Rudy wants any pity points in this, he would show the whole story. As it stands, people are just laughing at his rhetoric, which is fine. Never take shit Rudy says seriously. It is comedy. I agree it's hard to make a judgement with half the story... But it's hard to argue agaisnt the fact that most people on internet are toxic. Especially when they are anonymous. Given a voice to people that were not heard before and a false sense of purpose with likes turns some people completly crazy. I do not have any problem imagining that Rudy was harassed for any stupid shit he might have done or said at one point. That is the internet in a nutshell
Here is my feedback for Rudy. Two years ago I was that guy that left a thumbs down on every Rudy video, and made snotty comments on 'MTGFinance'. Then I watched one. Then two or three. Then I started listening. Rudy gives down to earth, good sensible life advice. I work in Finance. His lessons on bonds are spot on. His warnings about not investing when you don't have the cash are right. He's absoultely correct about chasing steady growth. He's spot on when you should build a diverse portfolio and invest for the long term. I now watch Rudy every day. Even the stupid made-for-entertainment box openings where he gets all the prices wrong. Now I leave a thumbs up. Not because Rudy gives a crap, but because highlighting good content means more people will see it, and maybe they'll be one less broke Timmy in the world.
I stopped supporting Rudy on Patreon. Not because I didn't like his stuff, but because I took his advice and cut excess spending so I could get my financial situation in order. 🙂

I feel like the overriding problem for most of these people is they want an, "easy money-- quick fix-- shortcut" which is common for the post social media/Internet culture. Investments take a cool head, forward planning, and time. Most of all time; that's why they're called investments and not "money machines."
Thats where i started. Then i bought a deck And then a pack. And then pre ordered a box. And now im all about the bleeding edge of mtg news. It can really suck you in. And be a money pit of hopes and dreams but ya know what. I really like sorting the cards. Its very relaxing and thats where i find the most enjoyment
I've only been a patron for a few months, I'm sure I'll eventually order boxes but isn't it also about supporting the content creator? The cheap boxes are just a bonus in my opinion.
It is both. He does a great job but$15 a month is a bit high for supporting. $5 is reasonable just for supporting. Think about it, $15 is a Netflix Subscription. But with the product offering and the access to him via messaging, the $15 is well worth it. This is true even if you are just buying for yourself to open pack and your own collection. Otherwise you are paying $90 -$105 a box.
It's very true. It's about supporting the person. And hell. Most other patrons don't even buy boxes. The big majority. I do sometimes when I can. I'm trying to get debt and all that squared away. And well on the way to it. Stay the course and have a great day everyone.
This video just shows how different everyone's perspective is. I rarely buy boxes from him. Mostly support Rudy for the video content and investment ideas. The cheaper boxes are a bonus.

I was a former patron who really enjoyed supporting Rudy and his quality content. I didn’t go away bitter or angry and I’d like to give my feedback as to why I cancelled by monthly patreon account since Rudy doesn’t touch on the reason I stopped. I collect magic heavily-I play a lot and I invest a little. I buy old expensive cards as investments when I can but typically, if I’m buying new/sealed product, it is to open and accumulate a complete play set of cards. I don’t invest in modern/standard cards, I buy them to play with or to get a full set. Rudy’s patreon is GREAT for people like Rudy who are looking to invest and build a position in sealed product. But for players like myself who are just looking to get a sealed box or two ever couple months, the allocation period and the accompanying wait is too much. If a set is only standard legal for a few months, by the time I got my hands on product, the newer set was either about to release or had already released. Theros had released before Rudy started offering Eldraine due to some allocation period hiccup. Maybe other players are happy being three months behind but for me it was a problem. Essentially I was always a set behind when buying boxes from Rudy. I didn’t have a “panic or fear reaction” as Rudy says a lot of us do. I just wanted to play with the freaking cards as soon as possible! A PLAYER can’t wait three months to touch a box of Eldraine OR Theros, an INVESTOR can. Rudy is a great content creator and I miss supporting his work financially as a patron. The bottom line for me was it was just too much of a wait because I was mostly buying the cards to play, not invest. If you are looking to invest, it’s a great option. If you’re a serious or even just a casual player, I doubt you’ll want to be three months late to the party. I also thought at some point Rudy would “open the vault” and sell us some older sets and that doesn’t happen. Keep up the great work Rudy! Most of us former patrons wish you nothing but the best and still appreciate everything you do!
4:08 "That is technically true" So, to be fair, this was a legitimate reason for a Patron to have a problem and to end their subscription and to call it a scam. If the Patreon description at the time of subscription clearly stated that Booster Boxes were $69.99 and that same day after the subscription went live, the price suddenly went up to $79.99, that Patron is getting the raw end of the deal. Doesn't matter what the sets are worth. Bottom line is, the Patron wasn't provided the deal that they signed up for. Now the ex-Patron's over-the-top respone is another thing entirely, but I think it says a lot about Rudy the way he dismisses the Patron's legitimate grievance.
Did you even listen to what he said? It wasn't as simple as someone just getting angry over the fact the prices went back up again but the continuous harassment that followed after. As much as the anger of the patron is understandable it is still Rudy's decision and the patron can just go up and leave. But no, he threatened and slandered Rudy and god knows what else.. So much that Rudy decided for himself even if an opportunity arises where he could lower the price again, he would not dare to do so because of said individual. Sadly many people are too entitled and don't have respect to their fellow men anymore. Rudy even pinned a comment that is speaking up against what Rudy said thus acknowledging your viewpoint as well but that is just common sense and wasn't the topic of this video at all.

To refuse to lower prices all because of one person who actually got screwed over despite having an overreaction is an overreaction and emotional response on rudy's part.
People whining at $79.99 seems odd when LGS's by me will sell sealed boxes for $105-$115 as preorder prices and the general online price I see is $95.00 per box. How much cheaper do you want it? Rudy says he sells those boxes at cost or even a loss! Get a taco bell party pack and try to seduce a distributor directly if you want cheaper prices that you'll still complain about.

Hey Rudy, I never got an exit survey but wanted to give you my reason. Name is Jeremy Thorner and I was one of your original $10 subscribers. Long story short my credit card got hacked and I had all auto payments suspended. When I got the new card I only renewed auto payment on a handful of accounts to minimize the risk of another theft. So that action automatically canceled your subscription. I quit buying boxes from you when EVs per box tanked and I could no longer flip them for profit but I still contributed because I loved the content. Then I moved back home to Louisiana where magic is dead in this area and I sold my paper collection and moved to online play. So long story short love the content, loved the deals you offered, but a combination of card theft and moving back home killed magic for me. Rudy has never done me wrong and like I said, I was there from the start. He offers amazing deals, and if you’re highly active in the game, and or looking for an outlet to invest the $15 or $20 subscription is worth it if you have the capital to do so. Love you Rudy and I’m so sorry you have to go through these nut cases that don’t appreciate what you offer. I’m a manager in sales and I deal with it every day, go out of your way to help someone, often at your own expense, and they want more and bash you after, just some terrible people out there.
I was only a short time patron. I canceled because I didn’t want to be involved in Magic anymore. I don’t regret that decision. Core 2020 is looking pretty sweet though...

Ive known alot of people in my day, and Im even older than creepy Rudy. As a statement of fact: Rudy has more work ethic, investment intelligence, honesty, and honor than most anyone I know... anyone who says otherwise is either naieve or lying.

I agree and Rudy has made some commentary on why he isnt there (Wall Street) Same reason why I walked away from a BHPH opportunity. You make choices in life as to how to earn, and different people have different ways to go to sleep at night and look themselves in the mirror. I say it again, Rudy is a rare (mythic) bird, and the MTG community is a better place because of him.
My favorite Rudy bash is when people get upset about him profiting off Patreon and his sales. I mean, I give all my pay back that isn’t used for bills and necessities. Why would i want to work for anything besides the bare minimum. How dare anyone make money at someone else’s expense. What is this world coning too?
I remember picking up all the slow selling sets; Shadows, Eldritch, Kaladesh, Aether, Hour, and Conspiracy 2, booster boxes at my LGS, as they went on 'Sale' for $90 each (regularly they were $120) not the lowest price, but not too bad for brick and mortar. Sets werent selling and the shop didnt want product that just sat. The best deals they had was on Iconic Masters at $125, and Masters 25 at $149. I bought a couple boxes of each. Not a huge investment, but it was a start. LGS sells out now, so no more sales since Dominaria came out.
The way I see it: most boxes at an LGS go for $100+ after taxes. If you’re a $15 patron and buy 2 cases in a year, you still save $$ and get the return on the boxes. Everything after that is straight discount. Additionally, Rudy has been good to me. Still holding Conspiracy and Dominaria boxes for a rainy draft day which he helped hook me up (and others) with. Also he’s a fan of Violator, the best Depeche Mode album made by Depeche Mode 🙃🤘. It breaks my heart to read about people who don’t consider all the angles and perspectives; but I don’t feel bad for them. It’s their loss.
So I'm new to the channel, but I've watched your videos periodically Rudy. I really want to say thank you for this. I don't watch your videos because I want to start investing in MTG, that will never be the case for me. I don't watch your videos for the box openings and what cards have value in each opening (I watch them strictly for fun). The reason I watch your videos is that you help me understand things easier. Here's what I mean: I recently just graduated with my Master's degree in Adolescence Education, with my subject area being social studies. Out of all the subjects that share the umbrella term social studies, economics is the hardest for me. Research has shown that students learn better when they're able to make connections to the material with their own experiences. And in watching your videos lately, economics is becoming easier for me to understand. What is the takeaway for everyone else with my statement? People should take your advice more closely and learn from you, rather than criticizing you all the time. Making any kind of investment is risky, and not a lot of things are stable. If people who invest in MTG in the hopes of being able to flip boxes one day fail to realize that, then they are doomed to fail. Just sit back and learn people.
I pay for a Patreon account and I live in Canada but having the chance to talk directly to Rudy and even getting to purchase a shirt or the rare occasion where he has a sale for something like FAB is worth it for me. I love you Rudy keep it up.
Basically they were lesser bought products then the market dried up. After the market dried, prices of the individual cards continued to move upward driving the box prices higher.

Rudy, you kept me in MTG longer than I would have been without you and I truly appreciate the time and effort you spent making your videos and running your Patreon. I totally lost faith in MTG as a game and community, so I cashed out and bought a house... still miss the good old days... Thanks again, I still watch your videos from time to time even though I don't play/collect anymore.
I became a patreon because I liked the content. Not with the expectation of getting astronomical deals on boxes. I think Magic is the only product that has a guarantee of making a profit, just depends on how long you are willing to wait. My Urza's Saga box will remain in my safe until it hit s 5K.

Still owe about $9,000 to student loan sharks and the FED! So I am working my ass off doing swing shifts, night shifts, seven day weeks, sometimes I forget which day it is; but I stay the course! I am not going to be 36 forever and I should work this hard as long as I still can! Get out from under my debt, still live semi comfortable ( not live off of pasta ) and start saving for a nice piece of property, make a happy home and know that I worked hard and was focused on being financially ok and living with bad credit and debt following me around!

I was patreon. Canceled for a few reasons. $15 a month after a year comes out to $180 i could have bought mtg products. Second reason there is no website or inventory of what you have and the prices to buy. Buying stuff is very difficult because it takes 2 to 3 days to get back. I dont mind supporting the channel hence I did 1 month subscription. If you can change your process on buying and selling to be more efficient let us know.
What I don't think people don't understand is that Patreon is meant to support the person, it's not necessarily for the tier rewards. If you want to open your on store, then get a distributor. If you don't like what is being offered, then don't buy the product. But even if Rudy wasn't giving you gold that you can cash in 5 years later, you know what you are "supporting" when you clock his Patreon. You not only get access to steady rate boxes at a good market price, but you get to hear the recent news, or actually talk to Rudy AND get a reply back.
Hey rudy, just thought I would let you know I got a taco bell chalupa box add on your video today. Congrats on the partnership. Also, back in 2016 I bought 500 booster boxes of chalupa supreme taco cravings box and the price has not changed 😔. The boxes also smell, but that's MTG for you!

People complaining about $80-$90 boxes where I am you can’t buy booster boxes of standard sets below $110 US unless you order a case or more and even then it’s only a 10% price break.
Weird, I remember Rudy in 2014 and I've always thought his advice was solid. I made some specific purchases that he said were crazy and now all my Force of Will copies are hot fire. In fact I'm pretty sure I owe Rudy money and my lgs is watching every video in hopes of knowing what to expect. Seriously, lgs will notice several customers asking something similar and they check if there is a Rudy video they missed.
Call me crazy, but we will have this same discussion about Theros Beyond Death a few years from now. Smashed between Throne and Ikoria with all these other products, feels alot like Eldritch moon.

The pain point that prompts a decision is usually not the pain point that most influences the decision, but will be the pain point that is referenced as the 'reason' for the decision. Brains are weird like that.
No matter what kind of service you try to provide people - food, products, transportation, whatever, there's ALWAYS idiot customers. It's like peanut butter and jelly.
Some people need to look at their budget and realize that being a Patreon and buying boxes is probably 5 or 6 steps away from their current financial situation. I'm just going to go back to my pile of chalupas and limited edition playmats in the 2 bedroom apartment I'm renting with 3 dudes now...
Stay the course people. I sold the Kaladesh box, and Orgins box, and commander 2016 To Card Kingdom for store credit about 2 years ago. From my purchase point as a Patreon I did ok, but I def should have held onto them. Another lesson I learned after the fact. I should have broken down the Commander sets and sold the singles. I would have done better than selling them sealed, oh well.
Tough crowd! If you're one of Rudy's patrons and buy absolutely nothing, that monthly fee is absurdly cheap for the amount of entertainment and information he provides on a daily basis. And if you buy boxes, it's even more of a deal! Still kicking myself I didn't sign up before 2019🤦♂️
Even if I am not a patreon I would want to see a discussion with Rudy from Alpha Investments and the guy from Reserved Investments which is also in collectibles. Could be interesting for both sides. From an investment view
@All Going to be completely candid here and honest as always as my integrity allows me no other means, save my sociopathic behavior. Rudy’s channel is not my Normal viewing, I generally am on apologetics videos and contextual criticism, Kalam cosmological argument debates, evidence of the self emergent mind in quantum physics etc. Rudy is the true appreciative value of one’s Patreon devotion. I have watched hours on hours of debates, and wish some of the higher leading scholars had an ounce of Rudy’s earnest demeanor. There’s no pressure to subscribe, no cringe gimmick to get you to sign up to Patreon, nothing. Everyone is their own and have the amazing innate gift given in free-will. Being mature, rational and responsible to know your actions on your own is rare now a days. Everyone wants to deflect or project their failures and short comings onto other individuals, simply because they couldn’t admit when they were wrong.
First of all, several patrons are happy paying the patreon fee just to support the channel and Rudy, but if you’re throwing a virtual tantrum because you only buy a single box a month and then the subscription on top, maybe you need to get your finances sorted. If you can’t buy more than 1 box a month plus the $10-$20 to make it “worthwhile” then buying magic isn’t for you at this point in time.
I wonder how much a Rudy Patreon account goes for on the secondary market that he can't acknowledge exists. Or is that going to be the next Secret Lair?
Sounds about right. When I canceled four of my eight Rudy's Patreon slots with suspiciously similar Florida addresses I was very mad and negative. On the one hand, he was talking against investing in Innistrad, on the other hand he was selling these cheap sealed boxes for 79.99 shipped-what gives?! I was deeply suspicious he was trying to keep people off the market with his negativity so that he could build a huge position on those and create a cardboard empire for himself. But then again, he was touting all these other hot sets as if they were the next Tesla stock, and I was deeply suspicious he was only promoting them to unload his previously acquired huge position on those on the unsuspecting Timmies. Well, I wasn't taking any chances, so I got a few new credit cards, signed for some more Patreon slots, and just bought a bunch of anything Rudy ever mentioned, pro or con, just in case. But heck, what can you do? It's a dog-eat-dog world in cardboard investing. Those other guys in their basements aren't playing any games-you snooze you lose! ( oДo) 📈
I don't see a problem with Wizards. They are a company in business to make money, and they still pump out regular 36 pack draft boxes so you can get all the cards you could ever want.

I buy MTG because I love the game. The money the cards are worth are an added bonus. When I was 14 in 1993 and found Magic at a Wizards of the Coast store I immediately fell in love with it. The cards were according to my mom "a waste of money" and yeah, they were worthless except to someone who could play, then they were priceless. My point is if you take a game you love and try to turn it into your job, more then likely you will just end up hating the game and your personal taste will cloud your business judgement. If you love MTG, invest in Pokemon or sports cards.
Many of these sound like Rudy made a slight oversight so certain things were slightly misleading. Like if the price differences were caused by a certain supply issue, why not have a running update on the prices of boxes? I wouldn't expect Rudy to be faultless because no one is but many of these seem like minor gripes people had that weren't clarified by the person who knew what was going on.

My rudy patreon fail was first order... a box opening of mh1. Paid full shipped price 198... only received rares and foils no c/uc/Snow-Covered lands... had to charge back to get a fair value of my purchase. Just didn't know. No bend left in rudy's taco.
I listen to this and compare it to other things like his "Magic is Dead" video and I don't know what to think. His opinions on the current market change pretty frequently.
rudy, when you say "we can't have these certain conversations" ...due to the inability of having reasonable conversation with such polarizing views. i think "we" can though and need to. I would appreciate immensely if you would do a video on Nielsen and other topics. The country is at a ripe time for these talks imo and like you said; the situation is the same as 2016- people are still the same. i still am a patron (return patron due to that financial stress years back). the world is still spinning.
