Brazilians are always complaining about the Portuguese, the thing is, it was a Portuguese king that gave them freedom and it was thanks to a central power, inherited by the Portuguese way of reigning, that Brazil didn't brake apart into smaller countries, like what occurred with the rest of Latin America. It's easier to have a common enemy, though, you can transfer your own faults to the other country. That's why the majority of Brazilians that I met and that are working in Portugal come with a vengeful attitude, saying that they're going to exploit Portugal just like we did to Brazil. That's why the cooperation between this two countries is insignificant, compared to the cooperation between UK and the US.

A lack of population (Brazil had only 17mm pop by 1900) and the influence of the agrarian, pro-slavery elite (that wanted to maintain the status quo) were the main factors that deterred Brazil getting industrialized earlier and becoming a bigger power In truth, most of Latin America suffered from the same problem (agrarian elite + low pop), most immigrants at the time preferred the more stable United States and that led them to becoming the most populated country in Americas (had 77mm pop by 1900)
