C Major is what is called "concert pitch." When you write music for an instrument that is not tuned to C Major you transpose that music on the page into fingerings that match the the version of the instrument that is in C Major. That instrument's natural harmonic or open note, in the case of the alto recorder, is an F but will be written on the page as a C. Another example, when a Bb trumpet plays a C as written in its music, it's actually playing a Bb and when it a D it's actually playing a C. Alto recorder's F tuning is a perfect fifth lower than a soprano recorder so in order to use the same fingerings as the soprano recorder you would take the notes written for soprano and re-write them a perfect fifth lower. So while the concert pitch scale of your instrument in reality is F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E the notes on the page will be read and fingered as C-D-E-F-G-A-B and be played as such. Transposition makes it so that you don't have to learn a whole new set of fingerings every time you switch between instruments in the same family. You only have to learn the C Major fingering and the sheet music is transposed to match.

Same. I played the soprano in elementary school and I thought it would be funny to bring a recorder in band class instead of my saxophone. So I bought the alto recorder and decided to actually learn it and I see some notes are similar to the sax!

Yamaha ecodear or Zen-On Bressan. Both are plastic, made in Japan, have somewhat darker more mellow sound than other plastic ones and are under $100.

the bressan comes in 415 baroque pitch and then modern pitch, the first is more expensive

You can, and some books are written like that. But if you play fingering for B on the soprano on the alto it won't sound with that note.

That's the soprano I often play on. I like to play on "cheaper" ones to show they can sound good. It all depends on your air control. Make sure you keep the Big 3 in mind for good sound.
