I am an adult who has inherited an alto and a tenor recorder and this video has been really helpful for a complete beginner. Hopefully I'll be able to train my slightly rubbish hands on the alto before moving on to the tenor!

Great idea! The fingerings essentially stay the same, so do whatever works easiest for your fingers.

Alto is so much sweeter sound to play, I don’t know why schools give beginner kids an instrument that’s harder to sound good on

I agree. It does sound nicer. The main reasons we may start on soprano involve finger size (alto holes may be too far apart for younger kids) and price (sopranos are much more affordable for schools on a budget). Other than that, I know some teachers who use alto with success all the time.

I bought a recorder that looks JUST like yours in the video. Told it was ALTO. Using fingering you showed, my tuner shows NOT. HOW do I tune it for alto. Fingering seems soprano but it's large like yours. Puzzled!!

So, as a teacher...I have a class of gr 4/5 students that are doing awesome on soprano. I have a few altos. If we're doing a play along, or reading soprano music, should I teach the chosen ones the fingering to make the pitch they're reading sound unison or sound harmony? I want to add some simple harmony to what we're learning for a showcase. If they use their soprano fingerings, will it sound good as harmony (especially if I write out a simpler harmony part)? Or should I have them invest in some time to learn the proper fingerings for the pitches?

I always loved the alto better but when I found out they switched the letters but kept the fingerings I was so mad and never bothered with it😂 of course now I realise it's because the first half of the alto is the lower half of soprano thus technically the letter is correct because it makes the same sound😅

But some people say you have to use "F-fingerings" on alto recorder. What's that all about?

The alto is based in F. So the fingering patterns remain the same, but the notes are different. A C on a soprano is an F on the alto, even though you're using the same fingerings. Complicated, I know, right?

Does the alto recorder require different sheet music than the soprano? I mean, if I downloaded sheet music for soprano, can I play those songs with my alto?

Yes you can. Just play the music like it was written for soprano. The sounds the notes make won’t line up but the findings will work.

I can’t play left hand on top. I have to play right hand on top. I know you would probably tell me off like every other teacher but I just can’t play it like that 😟

Honestly, it's only a big problem at higher levels of play and with small fingers. The holes are cut to fit the shape of left hand on top, so if playing faster notes and a lot of "black key" notes, it'll be tougher. But if it's casual, no worries. Also, I play reverse sometimes so it looks correct on for students. :)
