In a continuation of my Ultimate Altoid Survival Tin I put my kit to a test in overnight challenge put on by Campcraft Outdoors. Deliverables must be met to test myself and my kit. • Ultimate Altoids Tin S...
BEST Altoid tin/pocket tin kit video i have seen and i watch A lot of outdoors videos. the contents were well thought out and the way you pushed the envelope to include specific tasks to complete, i really dig that. how its took so long for me to discover your channel is just uncanny. but i have subscribed and looking forward to more .. well done sir.
Including the saw blade to build a full sized saw in the bush is an excellent idea, especially for a survival kit like this. I like the idea of building your knife scales, and its cool to see how you can make something so functional with some simple materials. It really shows that the more you know, the less you need. If I were building a kit I might just include the full eldris in its sheath with lanyard next to a small altoids type kit. It is just so comfortable and convenient to bring along already. Great video!
I've watched plenty of survival videos, your kit was so well thought out and original. The REAL saw and knife made everything so much easier than working with tiny flimsy tools and well worth the effort of making handles. You made it look easy.
Ha, was going through RU-vid and bumped into this video again. The first time I watched it I was very impressed. Now for the second time, a couple years in-between, I'm watching again. Still impressed. The Knife, and especially the saw. Whoa.
Thanks, I developed an Online Course on the subject. Check it out you might like it. www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
Its a good temporarry knife handle. For permanent you can boil wood to make it soft and hammer blade in, then dry it. You need to use burr with twisted fibers to avoid cracking.
I've watched a lot of survival videos, especially ones with Altoids tin cans. This has got to be (hands down) the best one I have seen. Subscribed for sure! Please keep making videos that not only show what to pack, but how you actually use them.. great stuff!
You gave your body layers of wool plus boots, etc. A lot of folks don't think about that, or a lot of other things you discussed. Very important. Thank you for being honest about this. That made me sub. 👍🏽
Welcome and thank you. This experience helped me develop an Online Course on the subject. Check it out www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
I like the format of this survival tin challenge with having the deliverables. Also like how you have a plan but aren’t so set on it that you aren’t flexible with the actual resources you encounter.
Love it, Like the saw blade in your kit. Typically don’t see people put something so light and compact in there’s, but so useful. For your knife handle was there any good sap producing trees around that you could have made a glue from to help secure the blade more?
No pine trees real close. It was a time thing more than anything else. I had projects to complete before dark that I barely got done. If this stretched into multiple days I would make some glue. Thanks for watching.
excellent video brother. i took a couple things and applied them to my little kit. one thing that i do want to suggest is for a container, what i usually do is, get a fire going and get some good coals going and then find a log and split it down the middle with a couple wedges and a baton, take some coals and place them in the center of that log on the inside down the split and let them burn their way down for a bit until you have like a bowl container. fill it with water, then take some small rocks and put them in the fire and let them heat up and then throw them in the bowl with the water to boil. then you have good drinking water and a durable container. Just an idea that i usually like to do. great video. keep them coming. you got a like and sub from me man. I am going to be doing a video like this on my altoid tin survival kit soon too. cheers bud
I know it’s been a while since you did this video but I have a idea for ya. On your modified mora Eldris blade, put a small hole in the forward and rear of the tang and put two flat top roofing tacks in your kit to act as makeshift pins. Pin your blade into one side of your handle so the heads of the nails are flat against the blade on the inside of you handle before wrapping the two half’s of the handle together. Maybe make the blade feel more secure in the handle without needing to do pine pitch glue or something. Still carve out the required internal wood material like you did of course.
Very cool. Is there a reason why you didn't use the saw to make the v-notches? Seems like it would have been faster and safer? I was worried with the amount of pressure you were applying with no handle on the knife blade that you might cut yourself. But great idea and great video. Thanks for posting!
This was part of an online challenge. Making a try stick was one of the challenges. I usually don't use a saw on a try stick so using just the knife was just a habit. Good point.
In my opinion the best budget tin, that fits in a pocket, and is practical, is a mini mess tin. Of course weight can be an issue you can get so much in that. Would you show us your optimum use of that? Fact is it can take relatively big knives like a Swiss Army Hunter, Workman, or a Leatherman. Maybe in fact the options are so bug you would not bother wanting to do it.
Great job on the kit. Saw blade a definite plus. A little tip... cordage being an essential, I would have unraveled it for the shipping. Still awesome.
Great work! i really dig this.. I got one issue, and that is, the using of the gloves, if you were gonna have the kit but not the gloves, you would be in a much tighter spot.. I wonder if you would try it again without them, and see if that would be possible... I bet it would have taken you 3 times as long to give you hands time to rest, pushing on that sharp metal handle then getting that knife handle made.. really great
@@BurningRiverBushcraft yeah, looked like it. Also, not easy to do when you just worked all night, huh? I've been there. Went to the Pathfinder school for a primitive trapping class, after driving 4 hours in the wee hours of the morning then running the whole day on fumes...next day didn't feel any better then had to drive home at the end. I must have slept for 2 days straight after that lol
Great idea of a blade-only in a tin. Idea: cut an outline of the tang out of some 2mm-thick plywood and put it into the tin? (Then just cut to size to fit the stick. And the leftovers are tinder.)
A morakniv eldris is the best choice for a altoids survival kit. Most people just throw a tiny swiss army knife and call it a day. Eldris is a almost full tang fixed blade knife
Seems like vandalism taking the handle off such a good knife to slip into a tin, but in fact it makes perfect sense as you need the best. However the Altoids tin is not the best
I developed an entire online course on this subject at Outdoorcore.com The course should be released next week. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram for links and information
have you thought about drilling two small holes in the tank part of the blade and carrying a few small brads to hammer through them into 1/2 of the handle? This would keep the blade from moving in or out ad also from. moving side to side? Thanks
hi - any tips on which type of band saw blade is best for hand use, cutting green wood like you do here? blade width, number and type of teeth etc. Also, would putting a "hard-fold" into the blade be a bad idea when it comes to cutting time? thanks!
These are 24 inch bacho bow saw blades. I have several tooth patterns that use the same frame. I mainise a dry wood blade, I also have a green wood and a bone blade. Putting the hard fold in the blade sucks, but it's necessary
This is all so interesting, you do a great job . I hope you do this again with a different kit or different terrain, season etc. Do you think you will do another altoid overnight?
@BurningRiverBushcraft I hope you make an announcement when you are gonna reveal the kit's contents which I'm assuming will be a lot sooner than when they go up for sale .. I'm subscribed
That would be my plan if I was there longer. I developed a online course on this subject that might interest you. www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
I actually developed a course on the subject. I cover building 2 types of saws and a lot more. Check it out. www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
I have bank line in my Altoid tin. Check out the entire playlist and be sure to subscribe to see my latest videos. ru-vid.com/group/PL8mglC-fQMqv6MSp8ArtfhWUt2CYr60b4
I’m shocked you got that blade in there and it did so well. Maybe I missed it or it’s in another video. But what kind of saw blade is that. It’s so flexible
I developed a course on Outdoorcore after this. I show all the details and a few variations. www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
This was on the Campcraft Outdoors Facebook group. I also just did a one stick fire challenge video from Midwest Woodcraft FB group. Here is the entire Altoid Tin Playlist. Be sure to subscribe to see my latest videos. ru-vid.com/group/PL8mglC-fQMqv6MSp8ArtfhWUt2CYr60b4

36 degrees and you need all that clothing lol I guess your talking F not C hahaha its 36 here in Australia most of the year and we surf n wear shorts n thongs,
Okay so here's something I'm not understanding in the way of bushcraft... I'm please forgive my ignorance... But when a branch is only one or two inches thick, why not just break it over your knee real quick instead of sawing?
@@BurningRiverBushcraft Oh cool! Yeah sorry I didn't credit you. I wasn't following you on IG at the time. Thanks a lot and I'll be sure to tag you the next time I steal one of your ideas. Which will probably be soon lol
It's autumn weather we're he's at so his attire is what one would be wearing if in the forest , it's perfectly in the realm of true altoid tin challenge, imho.
