Very nice Dusan! I think I recall reading a paper on this and they found that the most efficient use of Gallium/Aluminum reaction is 3 parts Gallium to 1 part Aluminum! Also if you put Aluminum foil in a rock tumbler for like a week the aluminum particles get small enough that they will react directly with water without using gallium. However the aluminum is extremely reactive so don't get it near sparks and don't use steel balls in tumbler use marbles or something lol

Yes correct. This is exactly what gallium does to aluminum,... AlGa alloy is able to create aluminum nanoparticles. The only problem with using only aluminium is that aluminium reacts quickly in air to form a passivation layer of aluminum oxide. But the gallium inhibits the aluminum from forming a protective oxide layer.

@cayrex what about using the all carbon cell setup you used when you produced hydrogen fuel cell with graphitic carbon felt, current collector and separator instead of this eBay fuel cell?

Some people have suggested that scrap aluminium used in this way is a good energy source. But what you are doing in effect is unleashing the large amount of energy which was required to create the aluminium from bauxite in the first place. From an overall efficiency perspective, it's better to recycle to aluminium because otherwise large amount of electricity would be required to replace the aluminium scrap for purposes which need the metal itself.

I've tried gallium with aluminum anode for aluminum air battery. Yikes!!! It goes crazy! Maybe if gallium is added in tiny measured amounts while aluminum is molten to slow reaction? Also: water collects in cathode. I've begun "charging" the aluminum battery to electrolyze water to remove it from the cathode. Aluminum for hydrogen production certainly one of many approaches. So much can be done with this. Thank you!

Well done Dusan. Will the alloy also be used up or only the water ? Have you already tried to make your own fuelcell that generates about 0.5 Watts of output power from Hydrogen ??

Will the Aluminum be converted to AlOH3 in this experiment ? What about the Gallium ? Will it also be consumed ??

The aluminium and water ar used. But the gallium can be re-used. For making homemade fuel cell I will still need some catalyst

Did you test if an electric potential is also possible in the reaction zone between aluminum and water? Whether positive or negative, it would mean that you have some potential there and you are wasting it. you can recover that gallium later What if instead of aluminum you used magnesium?

Hello video class. But you probably know that foil, which is not pure aluminum, contains impurities. It seems to me that due to the fact that there is an admixture of magnesium in the foil, the reaction goes faster or I’m wrong. If you can check it on different aluminum, for example from disposable baking dishes or beer cans, I think magnesium is not the least important in this reaction.

The final product is hydrogen, so no other gases will be created if you use only water. Here you can use pure or not pure aluminium. The reaction speed will also be dependent on how fast you add the water.

We are looking for a designer of a Hydrogen Fuel cell device that can use aluminium and gallium plus water for home and small business electric power generation. consideration should be given to flow rate, kilowatt rating. A functioning commercial grade of what your video demonstrated. Please reply if you can design it or you know any company that can, or any existing commercial grade device in the market.

Something like this is not commercial available,... or be made by some company. So, for hydrogen fuel cells can be used some commercial avaliable cells. But the tank, dryer, valves, etc need to be designed to fit the system. The kilowatt rating (power) is more or less dependend to the fuel cells. But the capacity is depending to the amount of the hydrogen,.... which you can google (how much hydrogen you need for 1kWh), I think that is needed around 40g oh hydrogen for 1kWh when the fuel cell have 60% efficiency.

When the AlGa alloy is reacted with water will produce hydrogen, aluminium hydroxide and gallium metal. The gallium will be on the bottom of the beaker. And if you heat to 30 degg C you can pour out the gallium.

Another video claims 130 mL per gram. If true this is 130 L per Kg! If 1 L will drive a fuel cell car 60 miles that's a looong way on 1 Kg!

@cayrex the thought occurred to me that the aluminum air battery gives off hydrogen so why not use that in a fuel cell? Do much potential is lost in the AL Air battery total energy density. Of course part of the fuel is vented and never used!
