Arguably the most forgotten player of the legendary 1984 NBA Draft, he was selected with the 7th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs, just after guys like Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley were off the board, and 10 picks before John Stockton. He was a young player joining a veteran Spurs team who had underachieved since joining the NBA in 1977. They were led by their aging Superstar George Gervin and Artis Gilmore, but after a Gervin trade and injuries to other key players, it would be Alvin Robertson’s team going into his second season. And he would respond by becoming an all-star, an all-NBA player, defensive player of the year and the inaugural winner of the NBA Most Improved Player award, and his incredible season included him becoming the first and only player to record at least 300 steals in a season and set the record for season steal average. He would spend a few more years in San Antonio playing for bad teams, before they finally welcomed their superstar rookie David Robinson going into 1990. But as he came in Robertson was out as he would be traded to Milwaukee for a more clean cut Terry Cummings. As a Milwaukee Buck, Roberstson continued his elite defensive play alongside Jay Humphries and playing with guys like Ricky Pierce, Dale Ellis and Moses Malone; and although he would have his first and only winning seasons in Milwaukee, he would still never get out of the first round. Back issues caught up to him in 1992 and he was traded to the Pistons halfway through the 1993 season, and it was during his back rehabilitation for over two years that we start having consistent run-ins with the law which severely affected his image. He would return for a comeback season with the expansion Toronto Raptors, and after the ’96 season he would be done in the NBA. His name and life would essentially be ruined after his time in the NBA due to his own mistakes, but also him being accused and charged with a horrible crime which ended up being a made up story, but the damage had been done and the NBA continues to leave him out of most conversations, and although he made his mistakes, he still is one of the greatest defensive players of all time.
