Jalen Rose: Did this FAB FIVE STAR reach his NBA Expectations? | FPP

Best known for his time as a member of early 90s Michigan Wolverines, known as the fab five as Jalen Rose was arguably the most popular member of a freshman starting 5 consisting of him, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. This team was one of the most popular and influential college sports teams of all time, but unfortunately were not able to win any sort of championship during their time together and would eventually see a lot of their wins vacated due to recruitment violations. After three years he entered the NBA with a Denver Nuggets who had great young players alongside him like Dikembe Mutombo and Antonio McDyess, but he would never get a chance in Denver, and after just two season he was traded to the Indiana Pacers. But in Indiana his career would blossom, playing alongside guys like Reggie Miller, Mark Jackson, Rik Smits, Antonio Davis and Dale Davis. The team was coached by NBA hall of famer Larry Bird and under Bird, they would make three consecutive conference Finals appearances, even reaching the NBA Finals in 2000, and during this stretch Rose improved every year, even winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player award in 2000. By his final season in Indiana, he was scoring better than Reggie Miller. But he would be traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2002, and would spend the rest of his career as a valuable veteran presence on bad teams, as he would play with a Bulls team trying to find their footing after the retirement of Michael Jordan, then a Raptors team trying to find an identity as they lost Vince Carter, before finally spending brief with the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns. His NBA career was only 13 seasons, but during that time he was one of the league’s only true point forward and could do a bit of everything on the offensive end, and even though he never achieved the popularity of his college days, he put together a very good NBA career which tends to fall the cracks.

The original Jalen. All of the current Jalens are named after this man.
@WorldwideWyatt

Yes he met expectations, he was the best player on the Pacers team that finally broke thru to make the NBA finals; he just needed an advocate like Bird who believed in his game.

Exactly. He really did. He was an early era version of the positionless basketball that we see today.

@WorldwideWyatt I think both of us can agree that Jalen should've been an all-star that year, even though he won most improved. But Reggie got selected that year.
@lucashenderson2775
@lucashenderson2775 6 месяцев назад
@@4392amtrakYup. Jalen played 13 years in the league and spent a significant amount of that time as a starter on some good teams (Indiana) and not so good (Toronto). All Star selections are beyond your control. You could put up All Star worthy numbers as he did that season and not get selected for a variety of reasons.

The Early 90s Michigan Wolverines Fab 5 is why I fell in love with Basketball, C-Webb, Jalen and Juwan Howard, baggy shorts and black socks, I was hurt when they lost to UNC in the National Championship because of Chris Webber calling a timeout they didn't have. Some more suggestions, Antonio McDyess, LaPhonso Ellis and Juwan Howard.

So did I man. I begged my Momma to put a Michigan Apex (bootleg Starter) Jacket on layaway and eventually got it. Once I did, I really treasured that jacket and nobody could tell me nothin at that time. I love it and played the Washington Bullets they had Webber and Howard on "Give and Go" on Super Nintendo and every other video game they were on. They also had a squad with George Muersan, Calbert Cheney, Tracy Murray and, Tim Legler. I also played with and loved the Nuggets with Jalen, Mutombo, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf. Both those squads were good.

It wasn't Chris Webber fault. It was a teammate at the far end of the bench that was telling Chris to call timeout. It was number 14 can't recall his name but he use to start and he hated the fact that the starters lost their positions to freshmen. That teammate was clapping when Chris called the timeout . How you go against your own teammates in a big game like that.

Salute to Jalen Rose. I believe he still holds the Denver Nuggets rookie record for assists in a season. That Michigan Fab 5 team was epic for the hip hop culture with the long baggy shorts and black socks. Now his time playing for my Home Town Team the Chicago Bulls and yeah that team was BAAAAAAD

Prime Jalen Rose was a beast, he was one of the best all around players in the league that could score, rebound, pass, and handle the ball for his team and play in any situation. I was so happy that Larry Bird was his HC when he came to Indiana because alot of people were calling him a bust before then. Once Bird helped develop his NBA game and get his confidence back he really took off. Really wished he could have played with a contender team after he got traded from Indiana but he still had a very nice NBA career for a guy that really was ahead of his time. In today;s NBA I think Rose would have been one of the best players in the league.

I make a strong argument that he should have came out of college earlier instead of his junior year. Prospects like Rose should have been developed a lot better. Every time he started to see his game grow the teams took the ball away from him. He’s one of my biggest what if’s.

Larry Bird is the one that turned Rose into a small forward. Before Bird, Rose kept saying that he was a point guard. Larry was known to say that he saw a lot of himself in Jalen. So, without Bird, Jalen Rose wouldn't have found his true position.
