Especially after revealing a Secret Lair that you were willing to rate as 'not worth it to buy' actually gives me a lot of hope for the quality of the Doctor Who decks. As someone who loves Doctor Who and who has bounced off of Magic the Gathering a number of times, I'm looking forward to seeing the deck on Friday!

Whenever there's a new commander deck release, I always wait for your Is It Worth It video before I decide to pick any of them up because I know it's going to be an honest and fair review. I don't base my decision on the overall cash value of the deck, but on what you say about how fun and interesting the decks are to play. I can't wait to see what you bring us on Friday! Prof, one of the things I love about your channel is you try very hard to give people your honest opinion, and find nuance in your views. Even when you really like a product you can still point to things you think they can improve, and even when you dislike a product there are usually a few good things about it that you note. Also, you always, always emphasise that what really matters is what US the viewers like / want to spend our money on. I’ve been watching you for years and you’ve never lost that. Thanks Prof.

Hey Prof. I got into (or rediscovered) Magic just this past summer (the LOTR expansion is what finally convinced me,) and your videos were one of the first that I clicked on to learn about the game. And I'm so glad that I did because I found a reviewer who reviewed and explained the game and its cards in a very open, non-judgemental but honest, and infectiously joyous way. To be able to speak openly about complex feelings stemming from something that you love but also have problems with, is a sign of maturity and decency that we all need, especially in a hobby that has a lot of potential to be toxic and gate-geeping. We should be allowed to enjoy a new set of cards while still criticizing things about it or the company. It's so awesome that you get to reveal a Dr. Who card on your stream, I'm genuinely excited for you after learning that you're a hardcore Whovian. I love Dr. Who myself, and I do have my criticisms about it, but that's okay because we are allowed to enjoy something AND have problems with it and not be called a hypocrite. You're not a hypocrite and I don't think you ever will be.

You are quite literally the only mtg channel I watch. Your vids are thorough and objective and making a video discussing your opinions before revealing the deck and not just waiting for the day to come speaks to that. Excited to see the new vid prof :)

WotC was smart to reach out for this, and it's ridiculous that they haven't tried to work with this channel more considering the size and reputation of the channel. They just want to guarantee positive messaging and feedback but it actually builds more community trust and faith to support channels like this where the consumers can get reliable information that isn't swayed by sponsorships etc.

I absolutely love this video (and all of the TCC videos). More people nowadays need to have the ability to have conversations like the Prof does. Explaining things calmly, voicing your opinion clearly, understanding that not everyone will have the same viewpoints, and accepting that the point of the conversation is not to change the minds of others, but to express your thoughts.

Actually really happy that Prof gets to show this off. Hope to hear a lot of Dr Who lore. I am still not a big fan of Universes Beyond because I started and returned to Magic because of its own setting and stories, but we are beyond the point of return so embracing the new direction the best I can.

I think your approach to Universes Beyond has been especially fair, and I respect your disclosure when you find it evolving. Early on I thought I had a very "No it's bad" feeling, but more releases made me realize there's going to be nuance product by product. I was very against the LotR set, mostly for being Modern legal and the chase for The 1/1 Ring. But it was easy to feel that way because I also don't care for the property. But now there's a Final Fantasy set coming and I know I'll be all in, even if those things I hated are present. We like what we like and when it comes to a card game, that's probably ok.

When I saw the trailer on you revealing the deck I was excited for you. Not a big Doctor Who fan but I’m glad someone who is a big fan of this show gets to reveal something so special! Congrats Prof!

Prof you're a great critic. You really are. You manage to be critical but never rude. I don't think you're a hypocrite in the slightest. I also think it's fine to update our feelings around UB. The LOTR UB was truly amazing for me.

I appreciate hearing your take on this specifically and I found it interesting as I've generally also been against universes beyond. I think to a lot of people the biggest issue with universes beyond is that they, for likely a very long time, have been Magic: the gathering fans. They follow whatever and wherever magic goes for better or worse because its Magic. With universes beyond, along with all the other products outside of the traditional sets they're told "this might not be for you" or "if you don't like it, then don't participate", but that's not really how these communities work. Say I love Cartoon Network, well I will watch the shows I like, ignore the shows I don't, but my community isn't a cartoon network community, its a community of fans of the shows I like. Magic has historically been a siloed community for the most part. When you say you play magic whether you played standard, modern or vintage, it was all still just different seasons of the same TV show. Magic has transitioned from being a "show" to being a "network" in the sense that now being a fan of magic is only being a fan of a segment of magic instead of just "Magic". I'm not really sure whether its good or bad, but I know personally thats one of the things I dislike about it. Before, if I heard someone say they love magic the gathering, I knew that we had a shared understanding of many concepts and story lines to some extent. Now if someone says they like Magic the gathering I have no idea if we have any shared experiences. If I'm not a fan of Dr. Who and am told "if you dont like it, just dont buy it" and someone else got into it because of Dr. Who then we have really no shared identity at all. You can argue that we do because we're both playing magic, but the FEELING of shared identity is vastly more important than an actual shared Identity. So many people who share a lot of things still hate each other because they don't "feel" like they share anything. For people like The professor, among other content creators, magic is so much a part of their life I'm sure they are thrilled to see any and all engagement in magic, but for the average MTG player, they dont really want "everyone" to experience it. They want a community that feels like they belong. The same way people dont want "toxic" players playing magic, toxicity isnt the only trait people want to keep out of their community. I dont play magic anymore so Im not even arguing that this is "correct" nor do I support awful behavior or gatekeeping a game meant to be played for fun. I just think it's impossible to cultivate such a passionate and narrow audience for decades and then to expect they'll be totally supportive of you casting the widest net possible just for the purpose of making money. And make no mistake Universes Beyond is specifically about money. Universes beyond offers absolutely nothing to the magic ecosystem that it didn't already have except "legal permission to use an IP people felt nostalgia for".

Hi Prof. Thanks for this video and thanks for helping me feel better about the Dr. Who EDH decks.- I stopped playing magic and playing sets after i felt burnout for all the products that were coming and the simple fact that i dont have enough money to buy every single set/release. Still, i am super excited for the EDH Dr. Who Decks. In fact, its gonna be the first MTG product i buy in years. Same as you i love the franchise and want to have the fun of playing with my fav doc (Eccleston) or quoting one of my favorite lines (¡Everybody lives!). I was feeling a little guilty, but your video made me feel better and understand that me buying this product is just a way to celebrate two of the things i love. In the words of a wise man (alien): "always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind".

Well done, Prof! I don't think I'm going to pick up any of the commander decks from Dr. Who, but there are definitely a number of cards that I'm going to keep an eye on to grab as singles. So, I'm excited to see what's in the list and excited to see you show it off.

I appreciate your stance on universe's beyond! As someone who got into magic The gathering because of universes beyond, specifically the Warhammer 40K decks, it has been one of the best decisions I've made because this game is so much fun!

Playing Commander MTG as a 'mash-up/themed' game, as opposed to just figuring out what wombo-combo to play this week, it has really helped me fall in love with creative deck building again. Obviously, we have the Universes Beyond themed decks that can be altered, changed around, improved upon, made more thematically tuned and fun to play against. It's even pushed me to create a couple of decks that are meant to be stand-in's for a Universe Beyond that hasn't been made yet... I am making the decks to tell a story as much as I am making the deck work and play well together. Taking a precon deck and making it your own is certainly a lot of fun, but it's been just as much fun trying to come up with a way to make a deck feel and play like Batman. Batman would rely on equipment, vehicles and having a lot of plans in place, so blue/white makes the most sense to me, and so it goes. Back to the video at hand; who would win in a battle between The forces of Sauron, The Necron Dynasty, New Phyrexia and The Daleks? I dunno, but that'd be a really fun showdown... who can be the most evil evil of all evils? I hope we find out on an episode of Shuffle Up and Play sometime soon.

I have been watching you for close to a year at this point, and from everything I have seen from you, I will say that it's obvious that you love this game. After alot of missteps the past years, WotC really need some good will from the community. I'll flat out say it, I hate universes beyond. They detract from normal sets and the magic story that I love and have memories from a very young age. I worry that these big cash grab sets are going to have increased power from normal sets so that eventually people who are not even fans of certain universes beyond IPs will be forced to play them because anything related to true magic will just not be as good.

Look. If you reveal Faction Paradox cards, or Frobisher, all will be forgiven.
